Monster Closets: The Thing’s video game sequel was a decent copy of a copy

There are plenty of warm bodies and not nearly enough cool heads.

Monster Closets is a randomly-regular column where Brock Wilbur takes a trip back through the highs, lows, and generally bizarre elements of the survival horror video game genre. This is exceptional niche writing but hopefully funny to the outsider by the nature of just how sheerly unhinged some of these works of art come. Please enjoy ahead of Halloween! When…

Dish & Drink KC: A big anniversary for one of KC’s best restaurants, plus a milk-based cocktail you’ll actually want to try

The Georgian soup dumplings at the Antler Room. Photo by April Fleming They’re back: The Antler Room celebrates four years The restaurant is bringing back its most popular dishes—but only for two more weeks. The time-warping circumstances of the past year and a half aside, it still doesn’t feel like it has been five full years since the Antler Room…

On tour in support of Fortitude, their first album in five years, the band took to the stage after sets from opening acts Knocked Loose and Alien Weaponry, both of whom also have new albums out (A Tear in the Fabric of Life and Tangaroa, respectively). Our photographer Barry Meitler was…

Nation of Language’s Aidan Noell looks onto their musical horizon

Nation of Language. // Courtesy of Nation of Language Nation of Language was formed in Brooklyn in 2016 after lead singer Ian Richard Devaney began fooling around on the keyboard, drawing inspiration from 70’s Brit-electro pioneers Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. The band’s fully formed sound came following the addition of Devaney’s former bandmate and bassist, Michael Sue-Poi, and partner…

Beach Fossils’ Dustin Payseur on Depression, his earliest musical influences, and the limitations of genre categorizations

Beach Fossils. // Photo by Rebekah Campbell When Dustin Payseur, the creative force behind the dream-pop band Beach Fossils, is asked about the first music he remembers resonating with when he was young, his answer is a surprise. “My dad had a Rage Against The Machine cassette,” Payseur says. “I remember hearing that and just being like, ‘This is amazing.’…

Local bartenders to compete in The Malört Mêlée at Minibar on Nov. 4

Soul/rock trio Black Stacey to perform during the event, which will benefit the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA).

On November 4, six Kansas City bartenders will square off at Minibar (3810 Broadway) in a public contest to see who can craft the best cocktail featuring Jeppson’s Malört—a bitter wormwood liqueur so polarizing and wince-inducing, it spawned the Malört face meme. Jeppson’s Malört is a Midwest tradition: the difficult liqueur was first distilled and sold in Chicago (and, for…

Local artists will define two concourses of the new airport

Among the many current fights over KCI, the platform being given to creatives has been lost in the conversation.

Courtesy Debbie Barrett Jones With all the talk about airport concessions for the new single terminal at KCI, news about the building’s large display of local art might have gotten a little lost in the shuffle. The 19 spots for local artists’ work in the airport were open to those living within 12 Missouri counties and nine Kansas counties, as…

Historical drama The Last Duel ranks among Ridley Scott’s strongest work

Jodie Comer in The Last Duel. // Photo by Patrick Redmond Confession time: I’ve never known quite where I stand on Ridley Scott. Some of his movies—Alien, Alien: Resurrection, Blade Runner, Gladiator—display vision and communicate an artist thinking deeply about important themes and the value of storytelling. There’s also a significant amount of his work that feels uninspiring and pedestrian—Robin…

Schmitt’s Creek: Missouri’s litigious AG wages an endless war on imaginary tyranny

Is that The Rock rapping on Tech N9ne’s new album? Yes it is.

Is there nothing Dwayne Johnson can’t do? The wrestler-turned-action star can now add rapper to his extensive—and apparently never-ending—list of credits. It seems The Rock himself jumped on the mic on Tech N9ne’s track, “Face Off,” from the KC rapper’s new album ASIN9NE. And while it’s only a smattering of bars at the end of the song, his debut performance…

Indie rock artist St. Vincent rolled through Kansas City Oct. 7 in support of her latest record, Daddy’s Home, bringing along LA-based comedian Ali Macofsky to kick off the night. Macofsky’s humor was relatable to the audience, discussing…

Brookside Poultry Company is bigger, better, chicken-ier comfort food

The fried chicken platter. To hear chef Charles D’Ablaing tell the tale, he was destined to open a fried chicken restaurant. Over the years, the fine-dining chef had perfected his homespun recipe along with other tasty, high cholesterol-inducing Southern fare.  Brookside Poultry Company was his first venture into the market—in a teeny, tiny Brookside alcove, no less. To say it…
