Vernon Percy Howard Jr., president of…

Australian pop-folk act Oh Pep is very accurately named

For the benefit of anyone drawn into the hotel room by the charming music, the band’s name was spelled in wooden letters on the floor. This was the 2015 Folk Alliance International conference, and the musicians who’d made this endearing gesture had come a long way: Oh Pep, of Melbourne, Australia.Oh Pep is primarily the work Olivia Hally (the Oh)…

Missouri’s bought-and-paid-for legislators are about to get a Sauer taste in their mouths

Missouri has looked for years for a leader willing to fight big money. Someone to wrest control from multimillionaire meddler Rex Sinquefield and other groups and people who routinely write seven-figure checks to influence elected officials. Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon said he would be the one. He vowed to lead a movement to limit campaign contributions, taking it to the…

Nick Cave’s “Property,” at the Nelson, is a must-see

A historical core sample of oppression and overcoming materializes before you in “Property,” the sculpture of found and fabricated objects by Nick Cave (the American artist, not the Australian musician) recently installed at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The 1,000 objects he has laid into old sewing boxes tap into Cave’s personal story and commingle it with the history of…

The Antler Room is about to open on Hospital Hill, plus the week’s restaurant events

Since March, Leslie and Nick Goellner have gone over every detail of their soon-to-open new restaurant, the Antler Room. And it shows — their buildout of the space at 2506 Holmes Road (formerly Chips and Dips Mediterranean Café) is subtle and sophisticated, with custom woodwork in each room that highlights the custom tables (built by Leslie’s father, John), midcentury-inspired bentwood…

Eddie Moore and KC’s young jazz musicians want a new space to create

Eddie Moore is looking for a home. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Actually, it’s probably better if the place is a little rough here and there — not big, not formal. Moore, the jazz pianist who leads Eddie Moore and and the Outer Circle, knows Kansas City boasts some really beautiful places, old and venerable joints, coat-and-tie rooms. That’s…

Lianne La Havas and Leon Bridges packed the Uptown with soul last night

The Uptown filled up early for last night’s long-anticipated Lianne La Havas and Leon Bridges show. By the time La Havas took the stage, at 8 p.m., the floor had filled almost shoulder-to-shoulder, and the space only got tighter for the remainder of the sold-out event. Both artists played to personal strengths and utilized the energy of the crowd —…

The Star celebrates new two-man editorial board by waiting 17 hours to post politically ignorant recap of Trump-Clinton debate

Monday morning, Kansas City’s biggest media organization kneecapped its most visible, prolific and engaged opinion writer, the sometimes maddeningly quixotic Yael T. Abouhalkah, a four-decade Star veteran. His firing was good news for just one person, Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback, the endlessly deserving target of Abouhalkah’s sharpest attacks in recent times. Among those for whom the dismissal is not good:…

St. Louis Post-Dispatch switches position (again!) on cigarette tax

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has rescinded its decision to rescind support for the constitutional amendment to raise the cigarette tax in Missouri by 60 cents a pack.On Monday, the paper published an editorial encouraging voters to say yes to Amendment 3, a ballot question to raise the nation’s lowest tobacco tax. Childhood health and education programs would receive most of…

Local Natives charmed Crossroads KC last night

Rain had threatened to unsettle the second-ever Local Natives show in the Kansas City area (the first was in Lawrence a little more than two years ago). Yet thankfully for the 500 or so fans who came out to the Crossroads last night, the weather held through the band’s 80-minute set, which blended music from each of Local Natives’ three…

The Anniversary coming to Kansas City in November on reunion tour

The Magnificent Seven fails to make good on its Training Day reunion

I wonder how many casual filmgoers are going to finish watching The Magnificent Seven this weekend and think: “Wow, that was a lot like Suicide Squad.” Of course, The Magnificent Seven, starring Denzel Washington, is a remake of the 1960 Western of the same name, which itself is a remake of the 1954 Kurosawa classic Seven Samurai. But with its aging A-list movie…

Screenland teams up with local artists and Vahalla Studios for limited-edition, hand screen printed movie posters, starting October 7 with Phantasm

Adam Roberts loves movie posters. That’s not especially surprising, given that Roberts (and his brother-in-law, Brent Miller) run the Screenland theater franchise. But Roberts has taken his love to the next level: He’s partnering with local artists and Vahalla Studios for a series of film showings and accompanying screen prints. It starts Friday, October 7, with the remastered Phantasm (long…

Names selectively omitted from The Kansas City Star story on child crimes unit

The Kansas City Star has documented some of the failures of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department’s crimes-against-children unit. The Star obtained memos in which police officials use words like “gross negligence” and “incompetence” to describe the unit’s performance. Written by Glenn E. Rice, Donna McGuire and Ian Cummings, the story raises serious questions about police department leadership. An unidentified…

Thursday 9.22The next draft-only release from Double Shift Brewing Co. (412 East 18th Street) is a Wheat Wine, brewed with honey malt and aged in brandy-soaked oak.
