Doctor vows to perform late-term abortions in Kansas

Slain abortion provider George Tiller won’t be the last doctor to perform late-term abortions in Kansas. Not if what Nebraska abortion provider LeRoy Carhart is telling the Associated Press is true. Carhart, who performed abortions at Tiller’s now shuttered Wichita clinic, said he will be performing late-term abortions in Kansas but skimped on details, saying he’ll talk about them when…

26 Days of Glossy Nostalgia: B is for…

Back in the ’90s, traveling burlesque troupes had not yet refined their understandings of what audiences wanted from a retro-vaudeville performance. (Today’s burlesque troupes haven’t, either, which is that audiences don’t want them, period.) This explains the bricolage approach of The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus, today’s entry in a series featuring old photos from the Pitch music archives that will keep…

Sailor Sequence premieres a new CD at a Lenexa church club

On Friday, downtempo Olathe pop band Sailor Sequence will present a new album called 5 at a CD-release party in Lenexa. Incidentally, the band tells me that 5 was recorded at The Punch recording studio in Lenexa. One of the contenders for Best Indie Pop in the 2009 Pitch Music Awards, SS plays soft, electronic songs that are sometimes all-instrumental….

The 2009 Pitch Music Awards Nominees Announced!

Ladies and gentlemen, the wheat has been separated from the chaff, the cream has been skimmed from the top, and the nominees for the 2009 Pitch Music Awards have been chosen. Because we are insanely in love with the scene and wanted to cover as wide an array of local awesomeness as possible, we upped the size of the ballot…

Here’s the brain behind the Katie Horner drinking game

Yesterday, I pitied poor Katie Horner and the backlash against the KCTV5 chief meteorologist’s often hysterical and overprotective forecasts. I also highlighted a drinking game, which I first saw on Lawrence.com, that is sure to leave you black-out drunk during the next Horner-gasm. Turns out the game is the brainchild of Adam Yarbrough, who posted a comment asking for credit….

We smell bullshit: Operation Rescue wants to buy Tiller’s clinic

%{}% Maybe Operation Rescue president Troy Newman was just relaying a pipe dream when he told media outlets that his anti-abortion group wants to buy the now-closed clinic of slain abortion provider George Tiller. No one close to the Tiller family has said the clinic is for sale. Besides, why would Tiller’s family sell his building, the site of his…

Royals prepare to spend for stars of tomorrow

That squishy sound you heard last night was the Royals taking a seat in on the Naugahyde couch in the basement of the American League Central Division. But all is not lost, baseball fans. The Royals appear to have done splendidly in the amateur draft. Kansas City took Wakarusa native Aaron Crow with its first pick. The Washington Nationals selected…

Generic versus brand-name

Let it be said once and for all that when it comes to ketchup, no restaurant should mess around with anything but Heinz. Sure, it’s all well and good to have premium house-made ketchup but if some people don’t want that (and they won’t) you better have that classic awkward-pouring glass bottle ready just in case. There are only a…

Someone get an abacus so we can figure this whole recall out

As if this whole recall effort wasn’t strange and confusing enough. Today, we find out that no one’s sure how many signatures were gathered to recall oversized novelty Mayor Mark Funkhouser. The city clerk says 20,962 signatures. Nope, says the Kansas City Board of Election Commissioners. They count 20,811. Not so fast. Clay County election board says lower, more like…

Summers with Boulevard Summer

Last year, the extremely talented bartender of Bluestem, Van John Zarr, was on a mission to give Kansas City its own memorable cocktail. Like the Manhattan for New York or the Sazerac for New Orleans. OK, it wasn’t really a mission, just a thought. “We have this great brewery,” he said, referring to Boulevard, “and you already serve wheat with a…

Beer enemies join forces

The film Beer Wars painted the world of brewing as a ferocious battle between little guys such as Dogfish Head and New Belgium being bullied by the multi-national giants of Miller, Coors and especially Anheuser-Busch. One of director Anat Baron’s targets was the powerful lobbying group the Beer Institute, which she implied was the bane of the small brewer, pushing…

Now Open (again): Cafe Trio

It was a month ago yesterday that Cafe Trio closed at 3535 Broadway and started the move 10 blocks south to 4558 Main. After five years it had simply outgrown its original space, something that’s not likely to happen at the new location, which is three times as large. But looks can be deceiving. Upon first walking in, it appears…

The U.S. Air Guitar Championships’ 2009 Kansas City Regional

Last night, the U.S. Air Guitar Championships stopped in Kansas City at the Record Bar, and one Kansas Citian — Eric “Mean” Melin — proved his air ax act was worthy of a spot in the U.S. championships in Washington, D.C. I’ll have more later, but until then, here’s a slideshow.  Categories: News Tags: Bjorn Turoque, Hot Lixx Hulahan, Mean…

Zagat Survey: the good, the bad, the mostly bad

Zagat released its second-annual fast food survey this week. America may be in a recession but we still think Starbucks has the best coffee and Cheesecake Factory has the best …everything. The survey involved more than 6,000 people and is broken down into two categories: fast-food and full-service. McDonald’s and In-N-Out did the best in the former category, with the…

Tonight! Emperor X at the Jackpot in Lawrence! Snag an MP3 and Video!

Chad Matheny wears many hats. He’s been in an R.E.M. cover band with members of the NYC jangle-fuzz band Oxford Collapse. Emily Yoshida Go west, young man! He’s a fierce defender of public transportation. He’s a big fan of geocaching and digital music. And tonight, as his band alter ego Emperor X, Matheny is playing in Lawrence at the Jackpot with I Need Sleep and…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 6/10

%{}% Boulevard Brewery mopped up in Washington D.C. at a conference for beer nerds. No word if they brought any samples to members of Congress. A recap of this year’s Jazzoo says the crowd was a touch smaller but the weather was awesome and the people there partied like wild animals. You will feel guilty for not eating at El…

When The Godfather played to an empty room

This week’s column involves Mark One Electric Co. and its questionable eligibility for affirmative-action programs. Carl “Red” Privitera incorporated the business 1974, which is run today by his daughter, Rosana Privitera Biondo. Searching for background information on Mark One, I came across a Kansas City Star story by Robert Butler on the 25th anniversary of the release of The Godfather….

The U.S. Air Guitar Championships’ 2009 Kansas City Regional

The U.S. Air Guitar Championships rolled into Kansas City Tuesday night. Hall of famers Bjorn Turoque and Hot Lixx Hulahan were looking for the next generation of air guitarists. They found budding air ax man Mean Melin, who won a ticket to the championships in Washington, D.C.

Does Rob Schaaf regret comparing health insurance to slavery?

It’s safe to say that one of the top three jaw-dropping moments from the 2009 session of the Missouri General Assembly was when St. Joseph Rep. Rob Schaaf compared health insurance for children to slavery in the 19th Century. Now, you might think that Schaaf, a Republican, got caught up in the heat of the moment — the debate about…

Killa City: Natasha G. Hodge charged with killing Stanley D. Garr in KCK

Wyandotte County prosecutors charged two people in connection with the murder of Stanley D. Garr. Prosecutors charged Natasha G. Hodge, 32, with second-degree murder for allegedly shooting and killing Garr in the 1500 block of North 23rd Street Monday morning. Hodge was also charged with criminal possession of a firearm and aggravated assault. She is being held in the Wyandotte…

Reactions to the closing of George Tiller’s clinic

Earlier today, the family of slain abortion doctor George Tiller announced that they would be not be reopening the Wichita clinic. Several organizations have sent out reactions. Troy Newman, president of anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, celebrated the closing and announced that Operation Rescue would continue its work. Here are excerpts from his statements: “We are thankful that Tiller’s clinic will…

Katie Horner will get you drunk

Poor Katie Horner. The matriarch of meteorology just wants you to seek shelter — intermediately! — with your emergency kit (and there’s still time to gather one up before the next rain). But some unappreciative souls want her fired. And some heathens — we’re looking at you Lawerence.com — want you to use her insightful, motherly weather forecasts to get…
