Dolls on Fire remembers John Lennon with a cover of his ‘Isolation’

Yesterday was the anniversary of the death of former Beatle and incredible human being John Lennon. In his honor, local rock outfit Dolls on Fire has just released a cover of “Isolation.” Aside from being a massively killer take on Lennon’s 1970 song, the track is also available as a free download here. Missouri plans a midnight execution of Paul Goodwin while his attorneys argue he is mentally disabled

In 1996, Joan Crotts got a new neighbor, and not a particularly neighborly one. Crotts, a widow in her 60s at the time, lived next to a boardinghouse in St. Louis. Paul Goodwin, an imposing 6-foot-7-inch man who took up residence in the boardinghouse that summer, made a habit of lobbing vulgar insults toward Crotts. Later, Goodwin intensified his harassment…

For those of you who were heartbroken by the news that Sleater-Kinney was skipping over our fair city on its first tour in eight years, rejoice: The beloved rock band has just announced additional tour dates, and Kansas City – along with Columbia and St. Louis – is on the list.  After the group gets back from its European tour,…

Artego Pizza now open on 39th Street

Many — too many — restaurants have opened and closed at 900 West 39th Street since the original tenant, Pangea, closed in 2008. That bistro was followed by a Mexican concept, then a Peruvian one and then, of course, the high-profile but short-lived Peanches. The newest restaurant in the space, a cheery pizzeria called Artego Pizza, may be the place…

Haerts performs at RecordBar on Tuesday

Attention, lovers of 1980s synth-tastic baby-making music: Brooklyn’s Haerts is here for you. The group’s self-titled debut is a dreamy listen, suited for equal parts true love and bad decisions. To be fair, it’s not all “Sexual Healing”–themed cuts. “No One Needs to Know” finds lead singer Nini Fabi bemoaning an unfulfilling relationship, while “Giving Up” — clearly written for…

Jenny Lewis brought sunshine, rainbows and rock to Liberty Hall last night

Jenny Lewis with Orenda Fink Liberty Hall, Lawrence, KS Friday, December 5 For more photos, go here.  Jenny Lewis strutted on stage last night at Liberty Hall dressed in her trademark rainbow-printed white pantsuit, looking for all the world like the gangster boss of sunshine and unicorns. She kind of acted like it, too: As she opened with “Silver Lining,”…

Eric Church shook up tradition at the Sprint Center last night

Eric Church with Dwight Yoakam and Halestorm Sprint Center Friday, December 5, 2014 With country shows, the audience knows what to expect. They’ve read the script. Tradition allows for a few variations – the name of the current city tucked into a favorite lyric, maybe, or a “new one” here and there, but even in an arena, mainstream country concerts…

Boulevard Imperial Stout is out in Kansas City next week

The goal for Boulevard Brewing Co.’s Imperial Stout is “motor oil,” according to Boulevard brewmaster Steven Pauwels. “Our goal has always been: how can we make motor oil?” Pauwels says. “How can we make something that looks like motor oil? That’s always our goal: real black, high viscosity, that big round mouthfeel.” Boulevard’s Imperial Stout starts hitting store shelves in 750…

What is Art Hall, the KU lecturer with ties to Koch Industries, afraid might come out in a massive records request?

Here at The Pitch, we’ve become intimately familiar with open records laws in both Missouri and Kansas. The right, not privilege, to view official records is one of the few tools that the public has to keep tabs on what is done in our names. And it’s a right we exercise often. Sometimes, government institutions fight to absurd extremes to…

Metro Pro Wrestling returns Saturday night at the Turner Rec Center with the end of the Adam Pearce and Ace Steel feud

Saturday night at the Turner Rec Center is the beginning of a rebirth for Chris Gough’s Metro Pro Wrestling. The show, featuring the stated “last battle in Kansas City” between “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce and Ace Steel, begins a stretch of a seven-show schedule through the end of 2015. “I missed it,” says Metro Pro owner Chris Gough. “It gets…

RecordBar reopens tonight, for real this time

Since Saturday, local venue RecordBar has been closed due to some very un-festive sewage issues. The fixing took far longer than anyone anticipated, including co-owner Steve Tulipana, who explained the hold-up over the phone.  “We’ve always had problems with that building, it’s just old,” Tulipana said. “So on Saturday, when the water stopped working, we had our guys came out…

The Sundry Market & Kitchen hosts grand opening on Saturday

The 10-seat communal table near the counter of the new Sundry Market & Kitchen, at 1706 Baltimore, was completely full during the lunch shift today, with patrons eating house-made pastrami sandwiches on chef Aaron Prater’s fresh-baked rye, a salad with red-lentil falafel or steaming bowls of polenta. The prepared foods and hot meals are major components of this new Crossroads…
