Rightbloggers keep it sweet on Haiti — unless you attack Rush, are Obama, etc.

The disaster in Haiti has obsessed both mainstream media and bloggers, and for the most part rightbloggers have been exceptionally well-behaved about it. Even some normally obstreperous critics have praised Obama for his interventions, and if they piled on Danny Glover for attributing the quake to global warming, they were at least as likely to pile on Pat Robertson for…

FDA to look at BPA

BPA was MIA, but now it’s back under the microscope of the FDA. The Food and Drug Administration updated its position Friday to reflect concerns over bisphenol-A’s potential effects on the brain, behavior and prostate glands of fetuses, infants and children. Previously the FDA’s position was that the current levels of BPA used in food packaging didn’t require further investigation. …

Do cigarette taxes reduce smoking? My lungs say yes

Confronted with a gaping hole in the budget, Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson has proposed a tax hike on cigarettes. Parkinson wants to raise the tax from 79 cents a pack to $1.34. Politicians tax smokers because they’re outnumbered by nonsmokers. Taxes on tobacco also have the virtue of saving lives. According to the American Lung Association, every 10 percent increase…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, January 18

%{}% A review of the Northland’s spotless Hayes Hamburger & Chili, where the onions are standard. When Free State Brewery is too crowded, a blogger ends up at 23rd Street Brewery in Lawrence and finds wheat beers and frat guys. A man dreams of corns dogs connected like popsicles. Banana-nutella crepes might have made Chez Elle a new go-to breakfast…

Concert Review: The Kinetiks at the Record Bar

By RACHEL GRAY Light check-check-check-check’s rolled over the audience. From the moment the Kinetiks took the stage around 10 p.m., frontwoman Spencer Goertz-Giffen’s silver sequined miniskirt and striped leggings signaled a change in the Record Bar. Once the Lawrence foursome began their set with a syncopated (albeit mic-squeaking) “Chemical Sunset,” a majority of the audience left their seats, drawn into the…

Blue Meanies turn down reunion offer

In a weekend post to their MySpace page, Chicago’s Blue Meanies revealed that they were made an offer to play a reunion show at this year’s SXSW. The band last performed at the 2006 edition of Riot Fest. So someone made a tentative offer to us to play a show, in a city that shall remain nameless, but starts with…

Riverboat Gamblers’ guitarist on the mend

According to Austin 360, the Riverboat Gamblers’ Ian MacDougall returned to the stage this past Saturday at Austin’s Red 7. MacDougall, as has been reported on this blog, got hit by a car back in October. After months of recovery and physical therapy, MacDougall is stuck with “a balky hip he’s still adjusting to,” but ready to get back to…

But on Wednesday, Rubin will be at the Plaza Branch of the Kansas City Public Library to tell locals about The Happiness Project: Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My…

Concert Review: Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart at Knuckleheads

Better Than: Watching last night’s episode of Desperate Housewives. Pulling up at Knuckleheads last night, I would’ve never guessed the short, friendly-looking woman with a knit hat getting out of the black Suburban parked by the front door was Stacey Earle. The back of the vehicle with Tennessee plates read: “Drive Her ‘Til She Drops. Odometer: 437,721”. So began our…

Fat City believes in higher education… The letter A is for apple pie, anchovy pizza and the local restaurants that received an “A” for excellence from the Kansas City Health Department this week. B is for Bloody Mary. C is for cave men. D is for diet: The Patrick Swayze Diet! E is for eating and not getting fatter. F…

Comment of the Week: Tess Koppelman’s parents

A little more than a week ago, police say a 14-year-old girl was murdered (allegedly by a family member) in rural Cass County. As Katie Rios’ friends, family members and onlookers grieved on a Facebook tribute site, local reporters were offering their own condolences, some sounding as aggrieved as if they’d actually known Rios — and in the next breath…

Tonight: Flashbulb Fires at Davey’s Uptown

Denver’s Flashbulb Fires is playing Davey’s Uptown tonight in support of their album Glory. With its swirling, atmospheric sound that belongs somewhere between introspective piano-rock and bands-that-generally-sound-like-Radiohead (which probably deserves a genre in and of itself), the band’s lush catalog makes for chill, dreamy listening—provided you don’t get caught up in Flashbulb Fire’s eerie lyrics. Catch Flashbulb Fires tonight at…

Angels Rock Bar reopens tonight, says renovations aren’t related to lawsuit

Two weeks after “Kansas City’s only true rock bar” closed for renovations the club reopens tonight with a new decor. But one Angels Rock Bar patron — who claims the clubs lacks the proper safety features for dancing on a ledge at 1 a.m. — might wish the renovation work had gone further. According to a lawsuit filed in Jackson County…

A taste of things to come?

I don’t care if they’re shilling for a shoe company. My Adidas are comfy as hell, and if they were good enough for Run-DMC, they’re good enough for me. If this means that Lucasfilm is letting Daft Punk do some Star Wars shit, then by all means. Can you fucking imagine? Seriously, I can’t think of anything that would cause…

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of listings. In this post, all our problems are solved. Canstruction opens to the public today at Union Station. The benefit for Harvesters uses canned goods to create massive pieces of art, which will be on display until February 11. This is also the last weekend to see the Chocolate:…
