Prison sex between staffer and inmate in Topeka ends in abortion, Cap-Journal reports

A plumbing teacher at the Topeka Correctional Facility knocked up an inmate, after striking a deal to trade her cash for oral sex, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported Sunday. The deal didn’t go down as planned. Anastacio “Ted” Gallardo allegedly forced inmate Tracy Keith to have sex with him in a storage facility in 2007, the Cap-Journal reported. Gallardo impregnated Keith,…

This Is More Serious Than Laryngitis

It’s a situation more serious than strep, too. Last Thursday, the members of Chicago’s Scotland Yard Gospel Choir were involved in an accident, wherein their van left the road and flipped over. All six members have suffered head injuries, and are in (at the very least) serious condition. Bloodshot Records have set up a page wherein you can find updates…

Over the Weekend: Applefest in wild, wild Weston

It takes a man with a long pole to make apple butter Actually, come to think of it, things could be much wilder in Weston, Missouri this coming weekend, when the historic hamlet hosts its annual Irish Festival on Friday, October 9, through Sunday, October 11 at O’Malley’s Pub & Courtyard. But this past weekend was Weston’s 21st annual Applefest…

Killa City: Ronald Taylor charged with the murder of William E. Harmon

Ronald Taylor has been charged with the murder of William E. Harmon, Kansas City Police Chief Jim Corwin reported on his blog today. Taylor, 30, was captured in last week’s violent crime crackdown. Harmon, 27, was found shot to death in an apartment at 1210 1/2 Independence Ave. on April 5. Corwin writes that witnesses were “drinking and doing drugs…

Best Of Extra: The ‘samurai guy in Westport’

You guys picked the largest mayor in the land Mark Funkhouser as the the Best Anti-hero Of 2009 in The Pitch’s Best Of 2009 edition.  A fair share of you also voted for the mayor’s wife, Gloria Squitiro. Also getting votes, everyone from Fred Phelps to Larry Johnson to Larry Moore (Larry Moore?) to Spider-Man. We’ll tell a little more…

In season: Figs

Eating a fresh fig can be a bit like getting on a motorcycle for the first time — slightly intimidating but joyous. While I’ve heard their taste described as a mix between a peach and a strawberry, it’s safe to say that the pulpy flesh is richly sweet and juicy when they’re properly ripened. If you’re picking figs, you want…

Where is it?

Farewell, fromage, farewell…. In this case, I’m sad to say, the question is: Where was it? I passed this bittersweet closing notice yesterday and it broke my heart. Not only because an apparently interesting culinary shop was out of business, but it verified one of my darkest fears: that the cheese I eat loves me more than I love it. Calling…

Deer defenders cause traffic jam — but no arrests — at Shawnee Mission Park

On Saturday afternoon, when law enforcement officers informed Jason Miller that he couldn’t use an amplification device on the grounds of Shawnee Mission Park, the animal rights activist politely crossed the street with his megaphone, continuing to protest in a legal manner. But between his calls to save the deer from the impending harvest in the 1,200-acre Johnson County green…

Chefs take centerstage

We might not have Miley Cyrus, but Kansas City is going to get a Guy Fieri show. The nickname-labeling, punky-haired host of the Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives plays the Midland Theater on December 7. The Guy Fieri Roadshow with Australian flair bartender Hayden Wood (despite what you’re thinking this is not The Thunder From Down Under) is described…

MCC-Longview Literary Festival

Members of the local literati convened last weekend in Lee’s Summit for the second annual Metropolitan Community College-Longview Literary Festival. Saturday’s activities included discussions about living “The Poetic Life” and blogging tips for writers.

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, October 5

%{}% A taste of the drink and food menu at One80 ends with a martini rimmed with Pop Rocks! . A recipe for gluten-free peanut butter cookies and a recommendation to use sugar, not Splenda. Everything good seemingly starts with chopped garlic. Here’s a video guide on how to remove the garlic smell from your hands. Mrs. Butterworth has a…

Best Of Extra: Prep football players catch passes, attention

College football coaches and Pitch readers agree: There is some skill at the wide receiver position at area high schools. Justin McCay of Bishop Miege and Keeston Terry of Blue Springs tied in the readers’ vote for Best High-School Athlete. McCay, a 6-foot-3 senior, has committed to play at the University of Oklahoma. Terry is headed to the University of…

MP3: Monta At Odds, “Styrofoil”

Dedric Moore, bassist for local ambient electronic quartet Monta At Odds was cool enough to send us an unmastered demo of a new song the band’s recorded, called “Stryofoil.” The tune starts out with droning electronic feedback, gradually building to meld with fuzzed-out guitar. That drops out, going to a laid back drumbeat, and picking back up in the background…

Video: Electric Six, “Body Shot”

In what appears to be the new version of “naked chicks at the Playboy Mansion” trend, we’ve got another vaguely pornographic music video. This time, it’s from Electric Six, and is for the song “Body Shot,” off their forthcoming Metropolis release Kill, due out on October 20. Unlike the Rammstein “Pussy” video, this is actually a pretty decent tune. The…

The car was towed so evidence can be processed. Rightbloggers see Chicago’s Olympics snub as Obama’s foreign policy crisis — which they cheer

%{}% Roy Edroso’s Rightbloggers: Exploring the right Wing Blogosphere appears courtesy of our sister paper in New York City, Village Voice. Last week rightbloggers were outraged when President Obama struck a conciliatory tone in his address to the U.N. General Assembly. They didn’t like that, nor did they like Obama’s warm reception there, and predicted this love-fest would only encourage…

Best Of Extra: Bowling with Ollie Harbin

In July, 81-year-old Lee’s Summit bowler Ollie Harbin became the oldest American woman to roll a perfect 300 in a sanctioned game. She also rolled her way into our Best Of Kansas City awards as Best Bowler. Harbin has been a bowler off and on for 30 years, and when she’s on, she’s on. Harbin’s 12-strike game in July was…

And we’re back …

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is still drowning in his dirty water scandal. Great analysis from the Star’s Steve Kraske, who’s wondering how long before heads will roll.  Nixon, a Missouri Democrat, had his worst week as guv yet over the who knew what and when scandal over his administration failing to tell the public about an E. coli outbreak at…
