Tori Amos at the Starlight Theatre

My Tori Amos record collection, which ends at From the Choirgirl Hotel, has been on the shelf for years. I was obsessed with her in high school — I spent countless hours trying to decipher the convoluted sexual metaphors in her songs and then wrote my own afflicted derivations. I sang “China” at a pops concert. And I even named…

Friday Freebies

And once again, we bring you Friday Freebies, wherein we present things to do this weekend that won’t cost you any more than the gas it takes to get to ’em. Crown Center’s Friday Night Flicks has Dr. Strangelove, while at Gladstone Amphitheater, in Oak Grove Park you can take your family to see Madagascar. On Saturday, you can head…

Sixth Annual North vs. South Festival Lineup

This August 20, 21 and 22, the North vs. South Music Festival, which began six years ago in Lawrence, returns to Kansas City for the third year in a row. Last year and the year before, the festival spanned multiple venues. This year, the whole thing is at Davey’s, making ye olde Ramblers Club your one-stop shoppe for touring indie…

Kansan of the Week: Rep. Todd Tiahrt

We don’t think Rep. Todd Tiahrt, who represents Kansas’ 4th Congressional District (a south-easternish chunk of the state that includes Wichita), got quite enough recognition over the past week. Of course, we noted on Monday the Congressman’s gasp-inducing speech on the floor of the U.S. House, where, arguing against federal funding for abortion, he suggested that the president’s and Supreme…

Wheel…of…Lunch

Trying to get a large group of people to decide where to have lunch is like trying to win at the Lobster claw crane game — a Big Choice machine filled with live lobsters: You take a long time trying to figure out how to go about it but you’re likely disappointed in the end. Well, it’s time to add…

Ice cream men nabbed for dealing

Some ideas from movies are too good to be true. The latest example: KMBC’s story about two Leavenworth men who were busted yesterday for allegedly dealing drugs from their ice cream truck — just like in the movie Friday! What’s up Big Perm, I mean Big Worm? KCPD Investigators stopped the truck, searched it and reportedly found drugs and drug…

Reporter’s Notebook: City services on a taxpayer’s dime

Frank Uryasz drives along Gillham Road nearly every day on his way to work. The section of park land that runs parallel to his route always looked well-maintained south of 39th Street. Once he crossed 39th to the north, though, Uryasz noticed a difference: dense, overgrown foliage made those parts of Hyde Park seem dark and ominous. So Uryasz called…

No soup for you recession

The conventional wisdom is that when times are tough, people turn to canned goods and generic brands in an effort to save money. But our recession diets appear to be changing according to Time magazine’s “10 Big Recession Surprises.” Soup feels like an indicator of hard times — whether that’s a brain ripple from classic photographs of Depression soup lines…

Miles the Bonny Covers Kermit the Frog

Kermit the Frog: heroic, romantic, philosophical and often-down-and-out leading man of the Muppets. Miles the Bonny: bearded, adventuring, philosophical and often wacky leading man of the INnatesounds Crew. Finally, the two are united in music and moment thanks to the Bonny’s digital sorcery. Take a look at the video below. You’ll notice that when Kermit opens his mouth to sing,…

Take time to stop and smell the china

When designing a dish, a chef often takes into account several senses — that’s why flavors and ingredients are layered. The plates and place settings are usually seen as only utensils — albeit, aesthetically pleasing and incredibly helpful utensils — but tools nonetheless. Yanko Design intends to change diners’ conceptions through Sense tableware, a collection of table items that are…

Flier of the Week: Federation of Horsepower at Aftershock

Federation of Horsepower, purveyors of fine-ass rock ‘n’ roll, bring us this Flier of the Week. Krysztof Nemeth, self-described “Low-Brow Pin-up Artist,” drew the girl, and the rest of the flier was designed by FoHP frontman Gregg Todt. Federation of Horsepower’s always had some truly boss fliers, come to think of it. There’s this one, for instance. The band’s always…

It’s time to pick blackberries!

The luscious dark berries are in season and I’ve seen plenty of baskets of the reddish purple fruit at local farmer’s markets lately. If you’d rather pack up the kids and find a sunny place to pick them yourself, the Fieldstone Orchard in Overbrook, Kansas charges $2.75 a pound for berries you pick yourself and — for those less-inclined to…

Breakfast Buffet: Friday, July 24

%{}% Happy in Bag offers up an assessment of weight — Kansas City Skinny — after a chicken-fried steak from Jerry’s Woodsweather Cafe . McCoy’s, in Westport, now has Hefeweizen on tap. . Making a salad this weekend? Check your romaine lettuce to make sure it’s not part of a massive 22,000-pound recall in Missouri. Felony Franks, a newly opened…

1. Party with us. Crossroads KC at Grinders is the site of tonight’s Pitch Block Party, with rockabilly from the Rumblejetts and Rev. Horton Heat. 2. Head out to the K. The Royals take on the Texas Rangers tonight at 7:10 p.m. 3. Frolic around Waldo. Saturday’s Frickin’ Frolic Pub Crawl visits various bars and raises money for Allyson Frick…

Skavoovie & the Epitones Back Together, Less the Epitones

Seems like the Mighty Mighty Bosstones aren’t the only ’90s ska band back together and in the studio. Newton, Massachusetts’ Skavoovie & the Epitones were one of the few ’90s ska acts not to go punk or traditional, instead creating a hybrid of ska, jazz, and swing. They are now simply known as Skavoovie—no need for the Epitones, they say….

Incoming: the Phenomenauts at the Riot Room, August 24

Operation: Jumped Circuit touches down at the Riot Room on August 24. This tour features intergalactic rock ‘n’ rollers the Phenomenauts in their first jaunt through our neck of the galaxy in three years. The last time they played around here at the Granada, I pretty much spazzed the entire time. They are one of the most energetic and entertaining…

Mammygate over? Only in our dreams

Best TV coverage of yesterday’s settlement in Ruth Bates’ discrimination lawsuit against Mayor Mark Funkhouser and the City of Kansas City goes to KSHB Channel 41, where reporter Chris Hernandez got an exclusive sit-down with Bates. Watching what ran on TV last night I couldn’t tell if that was a nervous smile on Bates’ face or whether she could barely…

Why did prosecutors drop the murder charge against Birmingham White?

Birmingham White, 24, was released from the Jackson County Detention Center July 7, one day after Jackson County Prosecutor Jim Kanatzar dropped the second-degree murder and armed-criminal-action charges against him. White had been accused of killing a man he called his best friend, 31-year-old Dwight Gill. Gill was found dead on a picnic table in Noble Park near 73rd and…

Roeder’s preliminary hearing set for Tuesday

A preliminary hearing for Scott P. Roeder, charged with first-degree murder in the May 31 killing of Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller, is set for Tuesday. The hearing, originally scheduled for late June, had been delayed a month to give lawyers more time to examine evidence. Roeder heads to the Sedgwick County Courthouse on Tuesday, July 28, at 9:30 a.m….
