D/Will Drops “Battery Effect” With Free Download

North Kansas City rapper D/Will dropped his first album, Battery Effect, yesterday. It’s available now for free download through 2DopeBoyz, a division of OkayPlayer (the Roots’ label). Our reviewer speaks of D/Will’s “considerable microphone skills and authenticity,” which is a damned good endorsement. Get that sucker via this page, which offers up the link. He’s got a show tonight at…

Ex-Councilman Chuck Weber cited for solicitation; case dismissed

Chuck Weber, a Northland councilman implicated in the corruption scandals at Kansas City, Missouri, City Hall in the 1990s, was cited by police in April for allegedly soliciting a blow job from an undercover officer. The sting took place on a Monday afternoon along Independence Avenue. Weber, 72, received a citation instructing him to appear in Municipal Court on July…

Throwback MP3 of the Week: The Creature Comforts, “Skyline”

Once a week, Wayward Blog brings to you an MP3 of music from the area’s musical past. For the debut installment of our Throwback MP3 series, I didn’t want to dig to deeply into the shelves. I figured I’d start out with something rather timely. Considering the Creature Comforts had their reunion show at the Record Bar last Saturday, they…

Urban farm fundraisers all over town

Caenan Castle in Shawnee This week is full of events leading up to Sunday’s Tour of Urban Farms (more about that tomorrow). Tonight at 7 p.m., All Souls Church at 4501 Walnut presents a free screening of the documentary Mad City Chickens, about people who raise chickens (sometimes illegally) in the city. And even if you can’t attend the different…

Irish Fest puts on a stout brewing contest this year

For the first time, the country’s third-largest Irish Festival  — the KC Irish Fest at Crown Center — will be holding a stout beer brewing contest. The contest is open to amateur brewers only and will be judged by Boulevard’s master brewer Steven Pauwels, among others. Any type of stout is allowed, whether it be dry, sweet, oatmeal, imperial, American…

Boulevard Pilsner being released today

Full credit for this post goes to KC Beer Blog, which broke the wonderful news that Boulevard is releasing its American lager called Boulevard Pilsner all around the city. They couldn’t have picked a better week for it, either. American lager is the classic hot-weather beer and Boulevard’s version uses all malt — unlike Budweiser, Miller, Coors or many other…

They’re Partying At Denny’s Now?

In a move that fills me with confusion and suspicion, Denny’s is trying to make their restaurant chain “cool” by creating a pseudo-subculture called Denny’s Allnighter. They’ve got band like Rascal Flatts, Sum 41, and the Gym Class Heroes creating items for a special “Rockstar Menu.” I swear to God—I can only wish that I was making this up, because…

KCPD can’t keep up with all of your red-light tickets

The red-light cameras strategically positioned around KC seem to be working their magic of making dollars disappear from disobedient drivers’ wallets. They’re also making drivers think twice about flooring it through intersections. The Kansas City Star reports today that the number of tickets issued at 39th and Southwest Trafficway has dropped 80 percent since the cameras were flipped on four…

Goodnight Mr. Budweiser: the commericals of Ed McMahon

Ed McMahon’s death was sort of overshadowed by all the rest of the news in the world yesterday. But let’s not forget the man who introduced, sat next to and laughed with Johnny Carson for three decades. McMahon also starred in his share of commercials, most famously for Publishers Clearing House and Cash4Gold. But back in the late ’60s and…

KC can keep banning smoking in bars and restaurants

The Missouri Court of Appeals gave Kansas City the “OK” to keep banning smoking in bars and restaurants. On Tuesday, the court upheld the smoking ban, which voters passed in April 2008. But the fight’s not over, yet. This morning’s Kansas City Star story says opponents, namely Bill Nigro of the Kansas City Business Rights Coalition, plan to appeal to…

Concert Review: Bachelorette, Pikelet, Andrew Morgan and Big City Livin’

BY JENI SCHROFF Having previously lived in New Zealand, I was especially excited to see one of the country’s best exports at the Jackpot on Monday night. Solo pop-synth princess-turned-band Bachelorette, might not have brought in the big crowds, but she definitely stole all of our hearts. Lawrence native Andrew Morgan appeared first on stage, greeting the eight or ten…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 6/24

%{}% A lifelong Kansas Citian takes his first tour of the Boulevard Brewery and finds it clean but lacking unreleased beers to try. In contrast to the new luxury Power & Light District pool The Jones, John’s Big Deck was offering a kiddy’s pool on its third floor this weekend. Not only does skim milk have fewer calories than regular…

Hunx & His Punx – “Teardrops On My Telephone”

There’s nothing I enjoy buying more than singles. It is 100% my favorite way to get music, be they new or old. These days, there’s a distinct possibility that a full-length album might not have but one or two good songs. With singles, that’s what you’re after—one or two good songs, but without dropping the better part of a couple…

Reginald Clemons gets to live a little longer

Missouri just pushed the “pause” button on executing any more prisoners, which is all too late for Dennis Skillicorn. The Missouri Supreme Court isn’t booking any more executions since the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals slapped a federal stay on Reginald Clemons’ date with the needle (Clemons’ attorneys challenged Missouri’s legal injection procedures to be sure executions are pain-free)….

Coffee Girls’ last week in the Crossroads before moving to Waldo

The Crossroads is losing a longtime tenant to Waldo. This is Coffee Girls’ last week in the neighborhood. The coffee shop closes Friday afternoon and starts packing for a move to Waldo. They’ll reopen on July 1 in a new location at 7440 Washington. “I think Waldo is a much more family-orientated location, which is what Melissa wanted in the…
