Faux-Fieri at Kauffman Stadium Monday

Shortly after yesterday’s post where I asked if somebody could explain Guy Fieri’s behavior at a Royals game, I got an e-mail saying it was not in fact the platinum-haired Food Network star but an impostor! This wannabe was reportedly heavier and didn’t sound anything like Fieri. Shortly after that, Fieri confirmed it on (where else?) his Twitter page saying,…

Video: Barbaric Merits feat. Les Izmore, “Carry the Torch”

No disrespect, but, well, this video is pretty crappy. The camera effects are like the equivalent of a jinky concert flyer. (I prefer this.) But fortunately the song, “Carry the Torch,” is really cool. The short, sweet and skronky track is from the local hip-hop DJ duo Barbaric Merits’ latest release, New Mutations, and features charismatic MC Les Izmore on…

Michael Savage joins Phelps family on list of those banned from Britain

United Kingdom Home Secretary Jacqui Smith revealed yesterday the names of 16 people barred from visiting Great Britain. The latest to join the list: conservative talk show host Michael Savage, who joins Topeka’s own gay hating preacher Fred Phelps and daughter/disciple Shirley Phelps-Roper. The news of the ban on Phelps and daughter came out back in February but the Savage…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, 5/06

%{}% KC Lunch Spots likes to “throw caution to the wind” and tip well over 20 percent on small lunches. An example all waiters wish people would follow. More random coincidences that defy odds, including an awkward blind date. There is a book deal waiting to be had with these stories. Spring means garage sales and garage sales mean unintentional…

A photographic correction: file under “kites, awesome”

This year’s Flights of Fancy was a big deal, with 8,000 people defying morning rain to put their creations in the air. The Pitch’s calendar section noted the event beforehand but incorrectly reported that it was put on by the Kansas City Kite Club. In fact, as you can tell by the photo, Metropolitan Community College-Longview made the kites fly,…

Kansas City, Missouri, School Board is on Twitter!

Oh, holy hell. The Kansas City, Missouri, School District just sent out a press release saying that you can now keep up with the district on Twitter. Board member Cokethea Hill follows Kanye and Common. Her Twitter name is cokethea. I bet she gets a lot of unintended followers. Also: * Airick Leonard West is airickwest* Kansas City, Missouri School District…

Last Night: Richard Lloyd ‘n Little Murders at the Record Bar

Mad men was the theme of the evening yesterday at the Record Bar, beginning at 11, with the unhinged-school-teacher persona of Little Murders frontman Bill Cave. Standing up stiffbacked and coiling his mic cable around his forearms as if to symbolically leash them to his torso, Cave barked out scary, repetitive lyrics in a muffled, punk mein that recalled David…

Scene Snapshot: Be/Non at Midwestern Musical Co.

This past Friday, May 1, around 8:30 p.m., Brodie Rush’s space-rock band Be/Non showcased songs from its upcoming album, A Mountain of Yeses, at Midwestern Musical Company. The First Friday crowd inside the little music store at 19th and Locust was so thick, in fact, that I decided the view would be better from outside, in the cool night air….

Parkinson backs coal-fired power plant

That didn’t take long. Not even a week after the U.S. Senate confirmed Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of Health and Human Services, and newly minted Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson has agreed to a deal that will allow Sunflower Electric to build a new coal-fired power plant in Holcomb. I checked in with The Pitch’s Carolyn Szczepanski, who pays way more…

Thank goodness for Ayds

“Thank goodness for Ayds” was the slogan of the weight-suppression candy Ayds. Its other early-’80s slogans included “Loose weight deliciously with the aid of Ayds” and “Why take diet pills when you can enjoy Ayds?”  The problem was that Ayds was pronounced the same as a frightening new disease. Yet the makers of the product chose not to change the…

Dom DeLuise and the trail of chicken bones

Comedian Dom DeLuise, who died last night in Los Angeles at age 75, did a promotional gig in Kansas City in 1987 to promote a movie called Going Bananas. Local publicist Kathy Hanis was hired to take DeLuise to different media outlets and to a grocery store since the heavy-set actor was, at the time, the national spokesperson for ZipLoc…

Did you know Keyz Parker?

This morning, Plogmeister Justin Kendall posted about the homicide of 21-year-old Pierre E. Parker, who, it turns out, had a rap career as Keyz Parker. Keyz was a member of the Brick Money Click, a collective that included the rappers MO Kash, Rosco Gambino and Filthy Fattz, whom I profiled way back in ’05. Brick Money’s Web site offers a…

Daily Briefs in Brief: Let’s see what Clay Chastain and the gang are up to this week.

%{}% Clay Chastain is one of Kansas City’s major recurring characters, kind of our beloved “Boner” Stabone, although now that I’ve said that, Chastain’s probably going to start ringing Pitch phones until somebody connects him with me in order to insist at stentorian length that he’s way more like Kansas City’s Luke Brower Seaver, the Leonardo DiCaprio character adopted by…

The table of condiments

It’s probably a fact: Your refrigerator has several jars of condiments, and you have no idea whether they’re still good. How long have those olives been in there? No clue, but you can’t throw them away because you might decide to have a spontaneous martini party. Wait, how do you even tell if olives are bad in the first place?…
