The Adult Swim Block Party brings the rock & ring toss

Money Shots is a glimpse of random happenings when we’re out and about on Kansas City’s music scene. Adult Swim brought its traveling block party to downtown Lawrence yesterday evening, and it was vaguely surreal. There were a ton of carnival games, wherein you could win such things as a Squidbillies’ trucker cap reading “Breathe If You’re Horny,” as I…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, April 20

%{}% An epic post on the correct way to make movie popcorn and why bacon fat might be the next great innovation for popcorn. Expectations are high for Chef Jasper J. Mirabile Jr.’s Limoncello Experience in May. Ever been in an empty restaurant with the music blaring? Apparently, there’s an unlikely connection between loud music and what you order. If…

Jared Allen, ex-Kansas City Chief, threatens to break some guy’s neck

Calling Jared Allen’s fiancé a cunt could be bad for your health — but may be good for your bank account. The former Chief and current Viking was caught on camera chewing some guy’s ass in a Scottsdale, Arizona, bar after one such an unpleasantry was directed at his woman. Bust out those cell phone cameras. Allen can be heard…

KJHK’s Logan Nickels talks simple drinks

Empty Glass is a weekly post devoted to furthering the alcoholic rock star image and mythos. That’s right, kids — drinking has no negative side effects and makes you look cool, to boot. KJHK station manager Logan Nickels could probably stand a drink every so often, considering the station will soon be moving its digs from the Shack on the…

Lilith Fair’s Lineup

Lilith Fair is making a stop at Sandstone in Bonner Springs on July 15, and the lineup is finally here. Looks like we missed Ke$ha (who knew that Lilith fans were down to brush their teeth with a bottle of Jack?), but Kansas City scored some other A-list stars that are sure to coax the ladies — and their begrudging…

Lydia Loveless, “Paid” (live at Kief’s Downtown)

Lydia Loveless turned in a lovely performance at Kief’s Downtown this past Saturday, and we shot this video of her doing a stripped-down version of “Paid,” off her recent album The Only Man. It’s a plaintive number about touring and playing music. Lydia Loveless, “Paid” (live at Kief’s Downtown) from Nick Spacek on Vimeo. Categories: Music Tags: in-store, Lydia Loveless,…

Cheating doesn’t pay at UMKC — especially if you get caught

A wise man once said, “If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.” The exception is if you get caught. The University of Missouri-Kansas City police blotter shows us why. April 14, 2:54 p.m. Information — A student in Flarsheim hall was upset after being caught cheating. We feel for ya. Now can campus security go back to taking stolen stereo…

Dennis Moore now a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act

Maybe it worked. Less than two weeks ago, Will Suarez, a student at Johnson County Community College, organized a rally at the office of Congressman Dennis Moore. The Peru native wanted the Kansas Democrat to sign on to the DREAM Act, federal legislation that would make higher education accessible for undocumented kids, many of whom were brought into this country…

Enchantment under the sea at the Jazzhaus

“Where We Pee” is a weekly excursion into a local music venue’s excretory facilities, with a premium on the witticisms scrawled onto the walls. Behind a door with a version of Magritte’s “Son of Man,” lies the Jazzhaus men’s room. More like a kid’s bedroom than the bathroom of a music club with its extensive undersea murals, it’s also a…

Lupe Fiasco at the Midland

Lupe Fiasco: n. an early exit which leaves the audience or spectator miffed, vaguely annoyed, standing (or sitting) like a dope in awkward disbelief Girlfriend leave you, suddenly, without saying a word? That’s a Lupe Fiasco. A post-coital rush to the frontdoor? That’s a Lupe Fiasco. Co-worker exit a meeting mid-presentation? Lupe freakin’ Fiasco. Okay, it wasn’t that bad when…

Record Store Day in Lawrence

Oh, there’s nothing finer than getting up bright and early and heading downtown to grab your coffee on a lovely Saturday morning — unless, of course, that Saturday morning happens to be Record Store Day, and the record stores you frequent most often happen to be right across the street from one another. I arrived at Love Garden Sounds about…

It reads: BEWARE — Keep your animals close. There is a Wayside Waifs employee in the neighborhood who is RACKETEERING for the shelter. If given the chance, this person will pick up your…

Where is this tasty Mexican breakfast?

Pass the tortillas… A great way to start the morning: eggs scrambled with chorizo sausage, refried beans and chilaquiles. Maybe it’s not as healthy as a bowl of oatmeal or a high-fiber cereal, but every so often, giving into temptation can be a good thing. What local restaurant is offering this tasty Mexican breakfast? Categories: Dining, News Tags: breakfast, chilaquiles,…

The new Tea Party people: Now with black people (onstage, anyway), proud to teabag, but still batshit insane

%{}% There were several Tea Parties on April 15, and rightbloggers who normally have nothing good to say about the “main stream media” (whom they consider biased and/or corrupt) were surprised by relatively flattering coverage from the New York Times, CBS and other agents of the evil MSM. Perhaps because they are unaccustomed to such treatment, they could not take…
