Let Kansans For Life guide the way with The Boycott List, a breakdown of corporations and non-profit organizations that KFL doesn’t want you to spend money with because of their ties to Planned Parenthood. Normally, you’re going to spend $42.95 a year on a membership to Life Decisions…

Kansas Republican will try to ban K2 synthetic weed

Robert Olson wants you to please think of the children Synthetic weed has finally broken out of Lawrence head shops and into Kansas City stores, but the clock is ticking. A prefiled bill in the Kansas Legislature — KS H.B. 2411 — would criminalize synthetic cannabinoids and make them Schedule I controlled substances. The bill is sponsored by Robert Olson,…

“The Absinthe Drinker,” Picasso, Melville Hall Collection Although this week’s snowfall and frigid temperatures were hard on the restaurant community in Fat City, Jonathan Bender started the the week on a warm, high note with a post about absinthe — the legendary beverage that was banned in the United States for decades because of the hallucinogenic chemical that’s still not…

First person shooters: Liquor in gun bottles

Anybody can do shots — but how many liquor bottles look like they could be used to shoot somebody? The answer is two: Tommy Guns Vodka and Hijos De Villa Repo Pistol. Tommy Guns Vodka is a Roaring 20’s brand of rye vodka imported from Poland in a bottle the shape of the sub-machine gun. It’s made by Alphonse Capone…

We’re in the midst of another bloody year in the Killa City. The death toll for both KCK and KCMO stands at five. Antawn Clark is among the victims. The 22-year-old was shot and killed Sunday afternoon in the 2500 block of Chestnut. Kansas City police released Clark’s name on Monday, and I wrote this post (“Antwan Clark, Killa City…

Royals sign older, cheaper version of Coco Crisp

Royals G.M. Dayton Moore has recruited another undertalented white guy, Scott Podsednik, to make a bunch of outs at the top of the lineup. The Plog sports desk has a soft spot for ol’ Scotty Pods. He was on our fantasy-league team the year that he stole 70 bases. And a purported eyewitness account of Podsednik stealthily applying a buzz…

Cafe Sebastienne debuts Friday happy hour

Happy hour at Cafe Sebastienne starts tonight from 5 to 7 at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Along with $5 martinis will be a new appetizer menu — here’s hoping that the mussels (leeks, pernod, safron and cream) and spinach and ricotta gnuda (with homemade tomato sauce) migrate over from the current dinner menu. Friday-night happy hour is a…

KC reporters jockey for story of slain Cass County teen Katie Rios

Cass County authorities say 14-year-old Katie Rios was killed in rural Cass County Thursday, and a teenage relative is in custody. That’s about all we know. Police are still waiting for the results of an autopsy to determine Rios’ cause of death. In the meantime, a new Facebook page, titled “In Loving Memory of Katie Rios,” already has 695 fans….

Incoming: Ray Price at Knuckleheads, May 21

This might be the first incoming announcement I’ve ever posted where I think it’s possible that the artist might die before the show. A macabre thought, to be sure, but Ray Price turns 84 next Tuesday. The man is a living legend, and his first number one country single came over 50 years ago, with 1956’s “Crazy Arms.” Price is…

It’s official: Ex-Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is coming to KC to run the Chiefs’ offense. Weis joins Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli as part of a New England Patriots reunion. Weis ran the New England Patriots Super Bowl champion offense while Pioli was vice president of player personnel with the Pats. During Weis’ tenure with New England, the Patriots…

We have a Marmite museum in Missouri?

It is intense and off-putting and distinctly not from Missouri. But one of the premier collections of a century-old British product is in the Show-Me State. The Missouri Marmite Museum is the collection of Doug Schneider. It resides in Valley Park, Missouri, about 20 minutes outside of St. Louis. The Web site I Love Marmite has an account of touring…

Concert Review: Lady Gaga at the Fox Theater

The elements be damned, nary a head was missing in the screeching, sequined crowd at St. Louis’ Fox Theater Thursday night. Lovers of pop and glitter had flocked there to show some love for the New York-born pop diva Stefani Germanotta, also known as the fabulous Lady Gaga. Before we begin: Allow me my brief exhortation on the brilliance of…

Friday Book Review: Ryan Lefebvre’s The Shame of Me

On Sunday, August 7, 2005, the Kansas City Royals lost to Oakland, 11-0. Later that night, Ryan Lefebvre, the team’s 34-year-old television and radio announcer, crouched in his closet, tears running down his face. Lefebvre was gripped by depression and anxiety, not the tedium of having to watch a Royals team that lost 106 games. In The Shame of Me:…

2009: The good news and the bad news in Fat City

A surprising number of new restaurants opened in 2009 Last year was bittersweet for restaurants in Kansas City. Some venerable names closed after long runs, but at least as many new venues opened — which in this economy is a very promising sign. Several restaurants moved to bigger quarters. One popular steakhouse, The Majestic Restaurant, got a second chance at…

Clothes Whores: Sean Malto’s got his own etnies

I told you Sean Malto repped KC hard. The 20-year-old skateboarder wasn’t named Thrasher magazine’s Skater of the Year (it went to Chris Cole, again), but so what? He has something in common with Tony Hawk now — his own skate shoe. Etnies, the company that has sponsored Malto since 2007, flew him out to its Lake Forest, California, headquarters…
