I Have Here In My Hand A List

A brigade of musical artists including Billy Bragg and Trent Reznor, as part of the Campaign to Close Guantanamo, want to know what music was used as torture during interrogations at the Cuban military base. Variety reports: Previously released documents from a 2005 Army investigation show that the works of Metallica, Britney Spears and some rap artists were used as…

The Abracadabras first and last video: “An Argument”

This Friday, October 23, the Abracadabras come back from the defunct to play their farewell show and to show this new video. Directed by Zac Eubank, the video is for “An Argument,” from the once-popular local band’s only release, Be Still, Be Cool. Its central theme is lead singer John Nixon in a sweaty, understated, Hypercolor spazz out. Honestly, I…

Killa City: Victim IDs for weekend homicide and possible murder-suicide

Kansas City police have released the names of three people killed over the weekend. Miguel A. Grimaldo, 19, was the man found shot to death in the 5200 block of Truman Road. Grimaldo is from Chicago, Illinois. Grimaldo’s death would be Kansas City’s 93rd homicide. Police say Michael Roscher, 53, and Patricia A. Kuder, 73, were found dead in a…

Closed: The Coyote Grill

The coyote howls no more in Leawood Well, it was a good try. Looking for a great idea to beef up profits at Yahooz, their Leawood “cowboy restaurant,” PB&J restaurant group owners Paul Khoury and Bill Crooks closed the venue earlier this year and quickly re-invented the location as a new Coyote Grill. The Coyote Grill was a popular casual dining…

‘Uncle’ Ed back in jail

“Uncle” Ed Muscare is back in jail. Midtown Miscreant points out a TV news report out of Florida that the former children’s show host and registered sex offender violated his probation by using the Internet and also by moving to South Carolina without telling the sheriff’s department. Definitely problematic for sex offenders. “Uncle” Ed had been posting bizarre videos to…

Service Industry Horror Stories, Episode #1

In honor of Halloween week and inspired by some scary tales we’ve been hearing around the office, we’re devoting some Fat City space to Service Industry Horror Stories. Over the next few days, we’ll share stories of kitchen hijinks and haunted customers that would make anyone run screaming from their job. My kitchen horror story involves a regional pizza chain…

Chiefs’ Larry Johnson says fan has ‘fag’ picture

The never-ending embarrassment that is Chiefs running back Larry Johnson vented on Twitter last night about Coach Todd Haley and blasted fans, calling them poor and saying a fan critical of his poor play — “Hey LJ, is it Haley’s fault you fall when D-Linemen blow on you?” — has a “fag pic.” Thanks to Arrowhead Pride, you can read…

Ailey II at The Folly

Ailey II, the young cast of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, brought the crowd to its feet Friday night at The Folly theater.

Concert Review: The Pogues at the Midland

To flip someone off in Ireland and the UK, you make the V-sign and hold it out palm inwards. Usually, the index and middle finger are closer together than, say, in the gesture you would make ordering two gyros at the falafel truck. This version of the bird (“the two-fingered salute” as they call it) was designed and put into…

Killa City weekend

Police are conducting a “death investigation” after finding two people dead in a home in the 5400 block of Ridgeway around 12:30 p.m Sunday. View Larger Map Police say the victims are a woman in her 70s and a man in his 50s. KMBC Channel 9 reports that the deaths may be a murder suicide. KMBC says investigators believe a…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, October 26

%{}% A peak at the wine and beer selection at MDL Wine and Spirits in Overland Park. Thumbs up for Shatto gouda and some thoughts on what beers go well with cheese. Could you bring yourself to eat a 70-year-old lobster? What if it was covered in melted butter? Here’s what happens when you get banned from the food co-operative….

Dennis Hess’ previous suicide attempt?

Dennis Hess died June 15. Three months earlier, he’d been hospitalized. According to his widow, Lena Hess, and her lawyer, Robert Arnold, Hess tried to commit suicide by mixing prescription drugs and alcohol. But his friends and family say the March incident was an accident. In an interview with Sgt. Chad Phillips of the Platte County Sheriff’s Department, Lena Hess…

And we’re back …

After some technical difficulties this morning, we’re finally up and running. Sad news. Mac Tonnies, author and local blogger of Posthuman Blues, has died. Coast-to-Coast AM had a nice write up about Tonnies, calling him an “acclaimed fortean writer and researcher.” The prodigious blogger was a fixture of the online esoteric community with his site Posthuman Blues and was highly…

Attention Christians: Atheists now offering post-Rapture pet care

Last week, when I glanced through a new proposal from Iggy Dybal, an atheist, real estate broker and a founder of the KC Freethinkers, I thought it was little more than a tongue-in-cheek mockery of Biblical prophesies. “If you are a Christian who believes in The Rapture and has pets, please, take notice,” Dybal wrote in his announcement. “A few…

Concert Review: The Queers at the Jackpot

The Queers show at the Jackpot was a little light. Light in attendance, light in original material — just pretty much a lightweight show all around. Now, it’s not as if pop-punk is plunging the depths of human experience for lyrical content. There were more than a few songs about girls Friday night. Still, the Queers were touring with yet…

Weirdos represent

This close to Halloween, getting the heebie jeebies from real-life, weird phenomenon just seems like the thing to do. Good thing there’s a new Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! book. Seeing Is Believing, put out by (who else?) Ripley Publishing ($28.95), features pretty much everything the world has come to expect from this company that catalogs the unusual: anomalies of…

Anne Winter, 1964-2009

When news of Anne Winter’s death yesterday began circulating through the scene, it was like a lake freezing. Lives came to a halt, all energy being redirected toward remembering and paying tribute to a person who touched so many lives in Kansas City’s musical, artistic, cultural and just-plain-human realms. Winter died yesterday in her home at the age of 45….

Oh Jason Whitlock, you never disappoint …

I asked for “strange tang” but I got “Pussy Galore.” Fox Sports columnist Jason Whitlock has delivered his Steve Phillips sex scandal column and his rules on who gets to have affairs. Did you make the cut? Whitlock says: I say a moderately famous man earning between $250K and $500K a year should be allowed a mistress he can see…

This week’s “Best of Fat City”

Feed a cold, starve a fever … or vice-versa? Someone in Fat City — we’re not mentioning any names — waited just a bit too long to get a flu shot and suddenly one day woke up with a terrible cough, a fever and all kinds of aches and pains. Kind-hearted friends are bringing over hot-and-sour soup from Kin Lin…
