Tour of Missouri in Kansas City

With the AIDS Bicycle Challenge on Saturday and the Tour of Missouri on Sunday, Kansas City’s streets buzzed with two-wheeling activity this weekend.

Pairing wine and cereal

The finest meals can be happy accidents — items that were next to each other on a grocery list or the last cans on the pantry shelf. The next time you run out of milk you might find an unlikely substitute in your wine rack! This isn’t quite beer in your Cheerios, and you’ll definitely want to keep your Merlot…

Kanye did not steal KU freshman videomaker’s moment in the limelight.

Anyone catch the MTV Video Music Awards last night? Evidently, they should stop inviting Kanye West to these things. Unless you saw it and are trying to forget about it, read about his act of enormity all over the Internet. Fortunately, West had no feelings one way or the other about the award for “Best Performance in a Pepsi Rock…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, September 14

%{}% Thoughts on 9-11, the loss of a job and Boulevard’s newest smokestack entrant — Seeyoulator Doppelbock, which might be on shelves Tuesday. Being on hand for the delivery of hops at Boulevard Brewery: not a bad way to spend your lunch hour. Where to find the steepest discounts on wine — surprisingly, high-end retailers might be the best place…

Chris Stigall will not be Kansas City’s next mayor

Flaming conservative pundit Chris Stigall told The Pitch this weekend that he is not running for mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. Stigall, a morning talk show host on KCMO 710, sent this reply via e-mail: I can confirm I am NOT seeking the office of mayor. We also had some calls from listeners who heard someone was floating my name…

Incoming: Max Tundra at the Czar Bar, November 20

Domino Records calls Max Tundra’s music “cosmic glitch-pop R&B,” which is as good a name as any for the refreshing way he blends ’80s pop, dance grooves, glitchy bitcore, and funk. The man born Ben Jacobs knows how to rock a beat, and the Czar Bar’s just intimate enough to make it feel like you and every person dancing next…

Buy Mark Knopfler Tickets, Get His New Album For Free

Former Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler comes to the Midland on April 21. We know — that’s a little bit too much advance notice. However, advance tickets go on sale today at 10am, and this show’s going to have plenty of time to simmer and build notice. Knopfler’s new album, Get Lucky, comes out tomorrow, and there’s sure to be…

Concert Review: the Get Up Kids at VooDoo Lounge

BY IAN HRABE When you tell someone you’re from Kansas you will get one of two responses. Some people will immediately reference The Wizard of Oz, and if you are outside of the midwest you are almost guaranteed to have someone remind you that “you’re not in Kansas anymore.” The more saavy bunch will immediately bring up the Get Up…

Kansas town really is just dust in the wind

Add another destination to your list of day trips not to take. The New York Times notes today the passing of Treece, a lead-contaminated Kansas mining town near the borders of Missouri and Oklahoma. Town Mayor Bill Blunk tells the Times, “It’s dead. Wasted land.” About 140 residents remain, most of them waiting … and waiting for the federal government…

Crossroads Music Fest No. 5

Shawnee council member rallies residents against Deffenbaugh

When Kevin Straub was running for the Shawnee City Council in 2006, he took a $1,000 campaign contribution from Deffenbaugh Industries. But that, he says, doesn’t mean he’s in the pocket of the area’s biggest trash hauler. Quite the contrary. In Shawnee, residents choose their trash hauler, signing up with one of the mom-and-pop outfits — A-1 Disposal or Superior…

And we’re back …

The big story of the weekend was Kansas City Star reporter Eric Adler’s profile of City Manager Wayne Cauthen. Once considered the fixer of Kansas City, Cauthen is now the embattled target of Mayor Funkhouser. And guess what? Cauthen’s writing a book. Doubt it’s nearly as juicy as Gloria’s. Also, Union Station leaders say the fix for the landmark is…

For those who comment, we salute you …

%{}% On a somber day of remembrance it’s fitting that the Comment of the Week is about remembering a lost loved one. Yesterday, Jackson County prosecutors charged Elbert J. Holly with second-degree murder for his role in the death of Montague K. Ashline. Also yesterday, Rosamarie wrote the following comment about her cousin on this Killa City post. I just…

This week’s Pitch and 30 things we learned this week

This week’s Pitch is on the street and so is Darlene White, the subject of Casey Lyons’ feature, “The Oldest Professional.” White sells $5 blow jobs so she can buy $20 rocks of crack. She claims she was once lit on fire by a John. It’s a hard life out there. Also, Martin looks at the dog park mess. Harper…

Yoda was a really obnoxious child

Tom Kane must have been a tough kid to sit next to in the sixth grade. Loud, boisterous, bouncing off the walls. Once, a teacher tied him to his desk chair with jump ropes. “Today if I was a kid in grade school, they’d have me on Ritalin up to my eyeballs,” the 47-year-old Kane says. Luckily for Kane, no…
