What’s going on this weekend

Whether it’s art, beer or hanging out with Greek people, Kansas City has you covered this weekend. Tonight isn’t First Friday but there is still an art show where pedestrians can roam from gallery to gallery and take in food and even a biergarten. It’s the premier Kansas City, Kansas Street Festival on Minnesota Avenue from 6th to 8th streets….

Do restaurants have bad service or are they too noisy?

Just last week, Tim and Nina Zagat wrote an editorial saying that the clear majority of all complaints they receive — some 70 percent — are about the service. They receive the complaints from thousands of diners who rate meals for their guides. But yesterday, Consumer Reports issued its own figures based on reports from more than 150,000 dining experiences….

What does the Tonight Show think of bacon vodka?

The bacon phenomenon has been well explored here at Fat City yet never completely understood. Yes, bacon is delicious and all that jazz but bacon bandages, bacon breath mints, bacon tuxedos? Part of the gross-food movement’s obsession with bacon has been to pair it with odd food items. One of the grosser of these has been bacon-flavored vodka. This week…

A 16-year-old boy was gunned down in the 2600 block of Jackson Monday. The song…

Great Scott! It’s the Back to the Future cake

Shows such as Ace of Cakes have done a good job demonstrating the skill level and obsessive-compulsiveness that go into making a wedding cake — something that begins with just flour, eggs and sugar. But despite some of the works of art on that show, this Back to the Future wedding cake still takes the … cake. Not everything in…

Killa City: Person of interest in Fairway killing found at a California hotel

The law finally caught up with a man suspected of shooting and killing his wife Monday in Fairway, Kansas. The Los Angeles Times reports that authorities spotted Franklin L. Grammer Jr’s pick-up truck in the parking lot of an Econo Lodge in Gorman, California, Thursday morning.  It was the beginning of what turned into an eight-hour standoff between Grammer and…

CD Review: Audiovox + show tonight

Audiovox Audiovox EP (self-released) Look, we know you’ve been eyeing those overpriced, noise-cancelling headphones for months now. If you really need an excuse to splurge, the eponymous debut EP from the KC-native Audiovox is it. In an unexpected step away from their harder-edged backgrounds, singer, guitarist and keyboardist Martin Bush (Salt the Earth, Paper Cities) and drummer Brad Chancellor (Orion)…

Charles Ferruzza on “Walt Bodine Show” today

Pineapple and pizza, pickles and peanut butter, nacho cheese and pretzels, there’s no shortage of odd food combinations and that is the topic of conversation on Walt’s show this morning at 10 a.m. No doubt Charles in his fellow critics will hit on the above and maybe even some local stalwarts like the strawberry-balsamic vinegar caramels at Elbow Chocolates or…

One Republican state rep who gives us hope on health care reform

While spending time at the Missouri Capitol, working on this week’s feature story, just about every Democratic lawmaker and staffer I spoke to in the House of Representatives emphasized that expanding health-care access had united the sometimes-fractious Democratic Party like no other issue. Rep. Ryan Silvey That same group think was operating on the other side of the aisle, as well. The…

You say potato, Ascot J. Smith says Last Man of Idaho

If a talking potato from the future had visited in time, we might have mentioned this sooner, but tonight marks the premiere of the film Last Man of Idaho, in which a talking potato from the future figures prominently. Ascot J. Smith’s experimental movie, a La Jetée-style collage of still images (including the one on the right), screens at 7…

You can’t get a beer at Mike’s Tavern next Monday and Tuesday

Big FYI to beer drinkers. Best to go somewhere over than Mike’s Tavern if you want to booze next Monday and Tuesday. The city suspended the bar’s liquor license for apparently violating some pesky ordinances. Mike’s  located at 5424 Troost Ave. If you can wait, they’ll be serving again on Wednesday. Wish this were surprising. The mother of a slain Independence teen claims vandals have destroyed a memorial to her son in Benton Park three times. Kathy Johnson told KSHB Channel 41 that her family had constructed a memorial for her 19-year-old son, Jeffrey Paul Johnson, but vandals replaced the flowers and photos with a beer bottle. Westport Flea Market turns 28 years young next week

Here’s how long ago 1981 was — the Royals made the playoffs! It was also the year Mel Kleb opened the Westport Flea Market and within a very short time, word spread about its great burgers and beer selection. Now in the hands of Joe Zwillenberg, who doesn’t consider himself the owner as much a caretaker (“it’s going to be…
