Phill Kline faces ethics complaint

%{}% Kansas couldn’t go two days without a negative Phill Kline story. A couple days ago, we learned that Wichita abortion doctor George Tiller would go on trial for 19 misdemeanor charges for allegedly violating Kansas law by failing to get an independent second opinion for some late-term abortions that he performed. The judge found nothing wrong with Kline’s conduct…

Tomorrow Night: A Benefit for Kyle Frick

This year marks the 20th anniversary of celebrated local band Season to Risk. It’s also the 22nd year of Kyle Frick’s battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, which he was diagnosed with at age 16. This weekend, Season to Risk reunites to play a benefit for Frick, who was a doorman at the Hurricane (between recurrences of cancer) from 1993 until the…

Daily Briefs: Friday National News Briefs and Precious Pony Dream Journal

%{}% U.S. in the leathery driver’s seat of Citibank, and a dream about an eccentric musician: Welp, here it is: Lee Greenwood’s boyfriend, the United States of America, is going to control up to 36 percent of Citibank, having already handed it $45 billion as a kind of prize for being so catastrophically inept at being a bank. Do not…

Killa City: Man found dead outside La Cascada in KCK

KCK Police found a Hispanic man dead in the parking lot of La Cascada, 6550 Kaw Drive, just before 1 this morning. There’s little information other than the shooting victim is in his mid-twenties. View Larger Map KCK Police don’t have any suspects. I don’t know much about La Cascada, but here’s a Yelp review from last August. If you…

Fearsome cowskull truck terrorizes, enchants

Westside residents may already be familiar with this awesome sight, but it was only recently that we at The Pitch noticed it cruising down Southwest Boulevard. Looking straight out of a Robert Rodriguez movie, this mightily ornamented truck belongs to the owners of Los Alamos Market y Cocina at 17th and Summit, our 2007 Best Mom and Pop winners. We…

Giving the dog a bone

I’m not sure if Neuticles has Bob Barker’s blessing, but the Kansas City company makes testicular implants for neutered pets. See, your ball-less dog may be suffering from “post-neutering trauma” and feeling “emasculated.” That’s what Neuticles’ founder and president, Gregg Miller, told me this afternoon. “You have to be a pet owner to appreciate Neuticles,” Miller said. “If you’re not,…

Cynthia Davis’ pants are on fire

Missouri state Rep. Cynthia Davis says — and does — a lot of crazy things. If the O’Fallon Republican’s mouth is moving, there’s a good chance the words coming out are completely untrue. Like when Davis wrote a letter to a constituent denying telling a reporter that her bill offering scholarships to stay-at-home moms who watch “soap operas and eat…

Now that’s how you sell an album: Josh Freese’s Since 1972

You may not have head of Josh Freese. The L.A.-based session drummer has pounded the skins for Devo, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle and others, appearing on over 300 records. He’s also a very, very funny man. For his latest solo album, Since 1972, the YouTube-proclaimed uber drummer is offering various album packages, ranging in price from $7 (includes…

Angela C. Bond One of the most sophisticated restaurant-nighclub venues in Kansas City, Seven, closed on Monday, February 23 after 22 months of operation. Owner Bill George — who originally opened the restaurant in the historic Western Union Building at 7th and Walnut with legendary restaurateur Victor Fontana — said it was a number of issues that led him to…

Concert Review: Bigelf, Wednesday, February 25, at the Riot Room

In concert, Bigelf sounds a lot like its name — big. The first week of The Biggest Loser big. Stimulus plan big. Is there treble on this island big. There couldn’t have been more than 50 people at the Bigelf performance at the Riot Room Wednesday night. No matter. Frontman Damon Fox wailed away, pounded on keyboads to his right…

Michael Vick is leaving Leavenworth

Michael Vick is going home. The Associated Press says the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback has been approved for home confinement in a halfway house in Newport News, Virginia, but may have to settle for staying in his Hampton, Virginia, home because of a lack of beds. The poor guy had been staying in the not so comfy confines Leavenworth’s federal…

Bloggers are the new advertising

Warren Buffet is pretty awesome for an old dude. He’s worth thousands of millions and yet his most extravagant purchase ever was buying Dairy Queen because he liked it and didn’t want it to change. Always a shrewd businessman, he made Ted Koppel interview him in a DQ and I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s got a hand in the…

Shon Pernice says he’s not guilty of stealing gun

Shon Pernice denied stealing a gun from his neighbor today in Clay County Circuit Court. Pernice, 36, entered a plea of not guilty to felony theft charges. His bond was also reduced. Court records allege that Pernice stole the gun from his neighbor, Juana Mendez, on January 31. The night before, Pernice and his children were visiting Mendez. She left…

Maybe FDA ain’t so bad compared to our neighbors

The Peanut Corporation of America messed up big time when it sent out salmonella-contaminated peanut butter. To its credit, the FDA was quicker in identifying the source than it had been for the tomato jalapeno scare, but lots of people still became sick and nine have died. While the peanut butter scare has captured the attention of the media and…

REO Speedwagon, Styx and friends promise cheap tickets on next tour

Fear not, classic rock obsessives: the global economic crisis will not waylay this year’s round of washed-up, amusement-park-haunting ghosts of ’70s arena rock. In fact, a couple such bands are using all this talk of stimuli to their PR advantage. Behold, VH1 Classic and the video game Rock Band® present REO Speedwagon and Styx on the Can’t Stop Rockin’ Tour….

Kansas defends USA from Brits. Wins Pancake Race!

While you were out partying on Fat Tuesday, the town of Liberal, Kansas, was busy preparing pancakes and training for its race against arch nemesis Olney, England. Think Frasier versus Ali, Rocky versus Apollo, Rocky versus Drago uh… Rocky versus anyone. Fortunately, this time the good guys won and Kansas whipped England’s ass. We have Wichita State student Tasha Gallegos…

Pineapple cream pie and other inventions

Charles Ferruzza Collection Well, now that February is almost over, I’m glad I remembered that this month was Great American Pies month. Pies really are one of the great American desserts and used to be a staple on most restaurant menus. Today, when most dessert lists are dominated by European confections — tiramisu, creme brulee and flan, to name a few…

Draft mag goes five for five in KC bar choices

Last summer I tore into Draft, a trade magazine for professional and serious home brewers, because they chose Boulevard’s Zon as the best beer to go with Kansas City barbecue. A lot of good Boulevard beers go with barbecue but Zon is not one of them. It’s one of the weakest of the company’s seasonals. Draft has done an infinitely…
