Talking with Steve Almond about his latest book, Against Football, ahead of Tuesday’s appearance at the Kansas City Public Library

“I happen to believe that football, in its exalted moments, is not just a sport but a lovely and intricate form of art,” cultural essayist (and lifelong Raiders fan) Steve Almond writes at the outset of his latest work, Against Football: A Reluctant Fan’s Manifesto. But true to the title, Almond’s book is a moral exploration of the grim realities…

Mission City Council to decide Wednesday whether to hit Mission Gateway developer with $600,000 annual assessment

Once upon a time, Tom Valenti made a deal with Mission officials: If the city made $12 million worth of stormwater improvements on the old Mission Mall site, the Mission Gateway developer would repay the city’s investment with a portion of the public incentives the plan would receive. Moreover, the city would get the first $6 million up front in…

Peter Frampton, Cheap Trick are at Starlight Theatre in June

This June, local power-pop fans can celebrate in a big way: Peter Frampton and Cheap Trick are joining forces for a double-headlining show on Thursday, June 18. It never occurred to us that “Baby, I Love Your Way” and “I Want You to Want Me” would complement one another in side-by-side sets, but now that we think about it, it…

Ixtapa Mexican Cuisine to celebrate 10th anniversary

Ten years ago today—January 19, 2005—restaurateurs Victor Esqueda and Alejandro Hernandez opened Ixtapa Mexican Cuisine at 7103 Northwest Barry Road, in a somewhat forlorn shopping strip across the street from the entrance to the newer, more glamorous Zona Rose shopping center. It wasn’t a particularly terrific location, and Esqueda didn’t want a typical suburban Tex-Mex venue. In those early days,…

Well, good news for the nostalgists of mainstream rock from the early aughts: Train is on the road again. Still riding the waves of last September’s full-length, Bulletproof Picasso, the California rock band…

You do.  The bi-state bridge project is…

After giving away the (revenue) farm, Sam Brownback tries to spackle together a budget

Gov. Sam Brownback boasted during his gubernatorial campaign last year about how much money he was pouring into K-12 education. It was a technically accurate but realistically dubious claim (he counted pension funding, which doesn’t reach classrooms) but one he made nonetheless. With a second term safely in hand, Brownback is now treating K-12 education funding like the annoying stepchild…
