Our primer to Kansas City Fashion Week with Sporting KC’s Aurélien Collin and more

As Kansas City Fashion Week Executive Director Teisha Barber puts it, “Nothing says Kansas City like Union Station.” It’s fitting, then, she says, that the grand space hosts the local biannual, four-day fashion run that kicks off Thursday. “We’re really excited about having this season there and hope to make it our home in the future,” Barber says. The event…

Tasting Arrowhead’s new, Philly-homage Chiefsteak

This is a meat battleship. “What. Is. That?” asked the first man I walked by on the concourse Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. He pointed at the comically large cardboard box I was balancing. Inside the box was a footlong bun loaded down with smoked brisket, primary-colored swatches of cheese and bell peppers, and a burping river of barbecue sauce: the…

Coki Reardon’s line is French for jewelry

Jewelry designer Coki Reardon wants to infuse the Crossroads with a bit of Paris. “We’re going to knock these cinder-block windows out and put in long glass windows, like a storefront,” she says, pointing to the wall of her studio, which runs along the Bauer Building’s side alley. “It will be like a Parisian market. I’m excited to introduce Kansas…

The Rainmaker weathers well at MET

Are we defined by the way we see ourselves or by the way others see us? That’s one of the questions inherent in N. Richard Nash’s The Rainmaker, now onstage at Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. Defining the personal – and understanding the impact that friends and family have on one another – is as relevant in this 1954 play as in…

Gravity

If you were always first on your bus for the planetarium field trip, eager for a suggestion of the cosmos as it looks beyond our atmosphere, Gravity is the madeleine that’s about to send your brain hurtling back to its geekiest childhood daydreams. If you believe in pure cinema – in motion and light and sound – and if you…

Screenland Crossroads: Details on the local theater chain’s return to Kansas City’s arts district

Screenland Crossroads’ new location is official. The art house has announced plans to reopen at 1701 McGee in the spring of 2014.  Adam Roberts and Brent Miller, who run the Screenland Armour, will operate the new theater. The original Screenland Crossroads theater (1656 Washington) closed in May, following a dispute with its landlord, who wanted to triple the theater’s rent. Roberts…

Kansas City Royals, Ned Yost decide to stick together for two more years

Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore said in late September that he would put off contract talks with skipper Ned Yost until at least after the season. It didn’t take long after Sunday’s season finale against the Chicago White Sox for the two to arrive at a deal that would keep Yost around through 2015. The Royals announced Tuesday…

Streetcar opponents dealt another legal setback; few options left

Another legal avenue for a lawsuit challenging the downtown Kansas City streetcar line was shunted Tuesday by the Missouri Court of Appeals. The appellate court decided that it wouldn’t take another crack at analyzing whether the streetcar funding mechanism is legal, nor did it opt to send the case on up to the Missouri Supreme Court.  Jeff “Stretch” Rumaner and…

The 39th Street Market is now open

Open for biz. Good news for residents of the West 39th Street neighborhood: There’s a new liquor store/grocery store/deli now open on the ground floor of the new apartment buildings at 39th Street and State Line, across from Jazz. The 39th Street Market opened quietly last week, not long after its owners, Price Brothers Realty, closed their World of Spirits…

Kansas City Symphony offering $25 Student Season Pass

When you say something like, “Oh, no, I’m sorry, I can’t go dallying about in Westport tonight. I have tickets to the symphony,” you sound either really, really classy or really, really snobby. It kind of depends on your tone. The Kansas City Symphony is offering new “student rate” season passes to students holding a valid, school-issued student ID card….

Paperhaus is coming to FOKL on Wednesday night

There is something delightfully imperfect about the DIY nature of the Washington, D.C.-based foursome that is Paperhaus. Just this May, the band self-released a hazy four-song EP Lo Hi Lo, and on it you can hear the individual influences of the four very disparate songwriters coming together to make some surprisingly genuine indie-pop music. Tomorrow night at FOKL, Paperhaus is…
