Turbo Fruits rip up at the Replay Lounge

By Brad Krohe Finding a strange scene at the Replay Lounge in Lawrence is nothing out of the ordinary. Last night’s weirdness, then, was unremarkable — at least, it would have been, if Turbo Fruits hadn’t ripped up a set of rock and roll fever later in the night. More on that later. First, let’s set the stage: Total Recall was…

Rightbloggers look back in anger at the anti-American World Cup

%{}% “It’s hard work, politicizing your whole life,” read the subhed of Matt Labash’s article in the rightwing Weekly Standard. At last, we thought when we saw this, they’re going to own up to it! We can stop writing this accursed column — and, freed of their delusions, conservatives can begin to live a normal life! It’s win-win! Alas, Labash…

Do you really want me snapping photos, Domino’s?

I never think about eating a Domino’s pizza as a moment I want to treasure. Delivered pizza is about convenience and speed. The food quickly arrives, is quickly eaten and quickly forgotten. It’s simply a buffer of calories until the next meal. But Domino’s wants me to stop and smell the pepperoni. As an extension of its Pizza Turnaround campaign,…

The Record Machine showcases three stellar local acts

By Brad Krohe The Record Machine served up three helpings of Kansas City artists at the Record Bar Friday night. Celebrating the release of Soft Reeds’ debut album, Soft Reeds Are Bastards (which is out July 13th — stream it here), the party was rounded out by labelmates Motorboater and Cowboy Indian Bear. It was an impressive showcase for the…

Give me the bird

Go ahead, bite into that breast! Back before anyone knew about dirty words like cholesterol, saturated fat and stroke, it was a tradition to have, right after church services, a hearty Sunday supper of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, biscuits with butter, and green beans. And that’s exactly what we ate on Sunday afternoon. Which restaurant served this fried chicken…

Charred KCK playground leaves melted, stinking remains

Someone or something torched a playground in KCK last Thursday. A day later, the metallic carnage and oppressive melted-plastic odor were still there. The playground, at 53rd Street and County Line Road, erupted in flames in the afternoon, but the cause is unknown. Fox 4 got some pretty gnarly video of it going up in smoke. I stopped by on…

Coffee not the way to go at Gloria Jean’s

Mall Santa requires a suspension of disbelief. Everyone has to agree that his workshop in the North Pole has been briefly relocated to a spot just a few feet from the food court. Mall coffee shops require the same leap of faith. You have to believe that the wood paneling and mellow lighting are what allow Gloria Jean’s Coffees to…

Burlesque Downtown Underground presents: Burlesque Revival at The Folly

The fine art of burlesque is a little more than just shimmying and bumping. There’s a variety show element involved as well, showcasing the talents of performers from fire eaters to singers. On Saturday, burlesque returned to its former stomping grounds in Kansas City at the Folly Theater for a night of performances heavy on local talent. Pitch photographer Angela…

Ned Yost will have to wait for Royals’ ‘good week’

Early last week, Royals manager Ned Yost announced that his club was in the division race. Anyone who didn’t believe him was encouraged to take their frowns and go sit under a blanket at Arrowhead and wait for Chiefs season. Yost seemed to inspire the boys, who promptly swept the Seattle Mariners. Then they went to Chicago and got their…

Off With Their Heads at the Jackpot

Off With Their Heads is a band I’ve been a fan of for a few years, though I’ve had a devil of time seeing them. The last time they stopped in Kansas City, they played at Club Mustache right before Christmas. I was swamped by the day job and unable to make the trek to Kansas City. This made their…

The key to reviving a corpse

%{}% Even yard-beer enthusiasts are being won over by the pineapple-cilantro sorbet at Glace. Dickey’s Barbecue Pit is apparently a great place to take kids; but it doesn’t stand out in the crowd of local barbecue. Bon Appetit picked the 10 best new burger joints for 2010. Burger Business says BRGR should have made the list. You can either make…

Bull riding and three more things to do this week

Today: Ride a bull. Every Monday, the mechanical beast and Wild Bill’s Steakhouse and Saloon will do his best to buck you off at no charge. Take your mind off the bruises with $2 domestic pints and half-price appetizers. Tuesday: Bowl a turkey — or three. For $15, bowl as many games as you want at Lucky Strike Lanes. Categories:…

KC barbecue featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives tonight

Chef Guy Fieri is looking to put four more Kansas City area barbecue joints on the map tonight. The Kansas City Barbecue Tour episode for his series, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” airs at 8 p.m. on the Food Network. Fieri stopped by Smokin’ Guns BBQ in Kansas City, RJ’s Bob-Be-Que and Johnny’s Hickory House Bar-B-Q in Mission, and Woodyard Bar-B-Que…
