Attention, jobless journalists: New York Times opening KC bureau

The New York Times plans to open a Kansas City, Missouri, bureau this year, Business Week reported Friday, citing an internal staff memo circulated by national editor Rick Berke and deputy national editor Adam Bryant. The memo also announced a forthcoming Phoenix bureau. The Independence Examiner notes that this would be the NYT’s second spin in Kansas City — they…

Where am I eating?

Where is this veggie burger? This week’s review of Blanc Burgers + Bottles mentions that restaurant’s signature veggie burger — a spicy lentil creation that a friend calls “the Indian food burger” because of its intense curry flavor. It’s not for every taste. One commenter suggested the veggie burger at Room 39 as an alternative. That may be true, but…

Leavenworth is loaded with culinary history

The real Harvey House At last week’s lecture by Stephen Fried, author of the new biography of legendary restaurateur Fred Harvey, I was reminded of the old Harvey mansion at 624 Olive Street in Leavenworth. Fred Harvey bought the striking stone building in 1883 and although several of his children lived in Kansas City, where the Fred Harvey Company was…

Kauffman concessions: The Royal Blue Dog

On Sunday, I ate my way through Kauffman Stadium and saw a baseball game. And if you’ve ever wondered what would happen if hot dogs and hot wings were somehow genetically engineered together, I give you the Royal Bacon Blue Dog.  In essence, it’s the hot wing dog. This dog is a sharp splash of blue cheese sauce and crumbles…

Nathan Granner offers a warning regarding tomorrow’s show at Jardine’s

Local tenor Nathan Granner contacted us here at Wayward Blog this weekend in the hopes that we could pass along some information regarding his shows at Jardine’s this week. It seems that while Granner’s “It Might as Well Be Spring: Songs in the Key of the Season” show on Wednesday, April 14, is a night of standards, the show tomorrow…

KC Urban Ag spring plant and produce sale — a slideshow

I spent Saturday morning at the Kansas City Center for Urban Agriculture’s Spring Plant & Produce Sale. It finally feels like planting season and the farm, at 4223 Gibbs Road in Kansas City, Kansas, had the transplants and starters for a vegetable or herb garden ready to take home. The two-acre organic farm — in the shadow of Highway 635…

Glenn Miller tells Howard Stern why he hates Jews more than blacks

If you thought white supremacist and all-around hater Glenn Miller received a lot of publicity locally for putting racist ads for his write-in candidacy for U.S. Senate on 980 KMBZ and WDAF-FM, it’s nothing compared to the exposure he received for going on Howard Stern’s radio show last Friday. Stern asked Miller who he hated more, blacks or Jews. Miller…

Liberty Hall has the classiest bathrooms in Lawrence

“Where We Pee” is a weekly excursion into a local music venue’s excretory facilities, with a premium on the witticisms scrawled onto the walls. Liberty Hall, as a combination show palace and movie theater, manages to have bathrooms that are pretty much the antithesis of what you expect when you go to a concert. They’re clean, they’re classy, and the…

Protesters at airport don’t want the TSA to see you naked

Members of the Liberty Restoration Project protested the use of full-body scanners at the Kansas City International Airport on Saturday. The responses from passengers was wide ranging.  “What if you need an MRI?” an old man snarled at the group as he exited the airport, shaking his head. Tracy Ward, whose sign read, “Refuse the human microwaves!” retorted with a…

Taking Back Our Country Tour at the Sprint Center (slideshow)

Approximately 4,000 people showed up for Saturday’s Taking Back Our Country Tour. Headliners were conservative superstars Karl Rove, Sean Hannity, Laura Ingraham and John Rich, the rich half of Big and Rich. Pitch photographer Scott Spychalski captured some of the glory. Click on Hannity’s Air Force One jacket to see more highlights. Categories: News, Politics Tags: Big and Rich, John…

The Big Pink, with A Place To Bury Strangers at the Bottleneck

The operative word with the Big Pink is love. The band’s 2009 debut was titled, rather charmlessly, A Brief History of Love. That record’s lyrics are as gushy as they are simple, bordering on cornball. The lead singer also has an embarrassing penchant for Bono-isms, including pumping his fist during his own songs. Yes, we’re talking about a band that’s…

Where is it? Oklahoma Joe’s has beef with “Average Joe”

There’s a new barbecue beef in town — the kind that is aired out on menus and the Internet. At issue is who produces the best cheese-covered barbecue sandwich. Oklahoma Joe’s had some words for a competitor via Facebook on Saturday:  Folks, a certain other barbecue establishment in town has introduced a new sandwich they call the “Average Joe,” and…

Lakeshia M. Ross, KCMO homicide 26: Police ID woman found in burning hotel room

Kansas City police say 34-year-old Lakeshia M. Ross was the woman whose body was found in a burning motel room Saturday morning. Ross’ body was found in a burning room at the Relax Inn Motel, 6300 Blue Parkway. Police initially called Ross’ death “suspicious” and are calling this a homicide investigation. Police believe the fire was intentionally set. Ross was…

Were you watching? Jason Sudeikis shows RecordBar some love

The cast, host, and musical guests always gather onstage at the end of every Saturday Night Live — and while it’s not unusual to see cast member Jason Sudeikis wearing a T-shirt at the end of the night (he sported a KU T-shirt around the time of the NCAA tournament ), this week he showed some love to Kansas City’s…

The Heartless Bastards at RecordBar

“Smoked meat is the shit,” came the reply behind me. It was an unsolicited but truthful response to frontwoman Erika Wennerstrom’s proclamation, from the stage, that her band, the Heartless Bastards, “had some barbecue today.” She added that it was nice to be back in Kansas City, and that was it for chitchat as the Bastards let loose with “Out…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, April 12

%{}% A recipe for “healthy” fried rice — which still involves frying, so it’s worth a look. Schlafly’s Export India Pale Ale, a seasonal release, is on shelves now. Here’s a taste. Here’s a sample of the tuna melt and soup-and-sandwich combo at Cafe Augusta. Would you drink a square Coke if it saved the environment? This profile of Dick…

Sarkozy called Obama nuts, crazy Web site reports — and Rightbloggers run with it

%{}%It’s been awhile since we’ve talked about the rightbloggers’ attitude toward President Obama. In a way, it hasn’t changed since 2008: They still hate him, and with a ferocity that trumps all reason. You need only scan their blogs to see this. When the Polish President’s plane went down in Russia this weekend, for instance, Reliapundit immediately declared this was…

Shanty Vamps rock the Shirley Temple of Doom

Money Shots is a glimpse of random happenings when we’re out and about on Kansas City’s music scene. Saturday night, I went and saw a house show in Lawrence at the Shirley Temple of Doom. I was there to see Denver’s No High Fives to Bullshit, with Weekend Dad. Turns out that I missed No High Fives while I was…
