Derek Richey: Meet the school board candidates

In 2006, there was so little interest — or confidence — in the Kansas City, Missouri, School Board that not one person challenged the incumbents and the election was canceled. This year, the race is packed with candidates vying for at-large and sub-district seats. From now until the April 6 election, we’re profiling the candidates, starting from the top of the ballot.Over…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, February 24

%{}% Thoughts on what it is like to struggle with one’s weight, and how we might solve the obesity issue in America. What it’s like to judge a homebrew competition — just make sure you have a beer to sip while reading this.  Pizza dough saturated in olive oil means a decadent, nearly fried meal of cheese. Kansas City trades its 16-year-old boy … not as creepy as it sounds

The Kansas City Wizards won a lottery for the rights to 16-year-old soccer prodigy Luis Gil, and didn’t waste any time in trading him to Real Salt Lake. According to the Wizards, when the California teen signed a contract with Major League Soccer, he signed on the condition that he could play for Real Salt Lake or the Seattle Sounders…

Incoming: The Zero Boys at the Record Bar, April 17

When I was looking at the Record Bar’s website, seeing if they had anything interesting coming up in the coming months, I saw that on Saturday, April 17, they have one of my favorite bands of all time playing: Indianapolis’ own the Zero Boys. I yelled “HOLY SHIT!” so loudly that somebody walking past on the sidewalk heard me through…

Faction fashion zine launches Wednesday night: Clothes Whores

The editorial content in some fashion magazines can be summed up in one word: painful. I’m done wading through obnoxious reaches for alliteration like, “Flirty fall frocks!” “Shimmery spring skirts!” Bring me a bloody barf bag. WearHaus’ Carmen Stalker and photographer Jeff Evrard are cutting to the chase. Tonight, they’re showing off their latest collaboration: a wordless, bi-monthly zine called…

Put a little liquor in your cookies

Pot brownies get all the credit — but baking with spirits is where the magic happens. Today, we step back from cocktails to talk about how you can build some sweet, boozy creations like Absolut Mandarin Dreamsicle Cookies with orange vanilla frosting. Guess where I’m eating

Not for the faint of heart: a firm banana surrounded by two hefty scoops of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, dripping with chocolate, caramel and raspberry sauces and a big squirt of whipped cream, dotted with deep-fried Snickers candy bars. So, Fat City readers, which restaurant is serving this creation? Categories: Dining, News Tags: Where am I eating?

K2 synthetic marijuana banned in Pettis County, Missouri

Apparently Missouri lawmakers’ state ban on K2 synthetic marijuana wasn’t moving fast enough for Pettis County, which just outlawed the synthetic cannabinoid. Pettis County is now the first place in the nation to ban K2. The ban was proposed by the county’s prosecuting attorney, Jeff Mittelhauser, according to the Sedalia Democrat. Mittelhauser told the County Commission he’d heard of K2…

Video: Juggalo news from ICNN

This is probably the funniest Juggalo parody ever. I’d say that’s most likely due to the fact that it’s actually fairly kindhearted in its depiction of the Insane Clown Posse-loving, face-paint sporting folks it parodies. Rather than going full-tilt and taking a tone of cruel mockery, it actually seems more like something that the Onion might do — i.e., so…

Powerball lotto tickets will save broke-ass Missouri

This is what it’s come to — a Missouri lawmaker introducing a bill that would deduct $2 from Gov. Jay Nixon’s paycheck each pay period and deposited in “Governor Nixon’s Federal Scratch-Off, Match-Off Fund” to buy Powerball tickets. St. Charles County Republican Rep. Mark Parkinson is the mastermind behind the bill (H.B. 2131), and lawmakers have even scheduled a hearing…

Download Mixtapes’ Maps

Mixtapes hail from both Ohio and Michigan. The band plays music that will draw you in, reminding you of that first time you heard one of those songs like the Replacements’ “I Will Dare” — a song that hits you in the gut, making your jaw drop. You sit there, in front of your speakers, wondering why the hell this…

Major League Soccer headed for strike?

Major League Soccer’s season is scheduled to begin on March 25, but that could be in jeopardy if the players and owners don’t strike a deal on a new collective bargaining agreement. The two sides have agreed to talk up until Thursday, and it’s likely to come and go with nothing getting done, according to multiple reports. Over the weekend,…
