And we’re back …

Let’s pick up where we left off last week. Incest porn isn’t enough to ding the Mohler family’s reputation in the eyes of their friends and family. The Kansas City Star asked allies of the Mohler men what they thought of the charges of sexual abuse against the six family members and found a chorus of people questioning the credibility…

Thomas Frank: Meat eater, proud Lancer

Much like the role the conservative David Brooks plays at The New York Times, Thomas Frank provides Wall Street Journal readers with a liberal perspective. In his most recent column, the author of What’s the Matter With Kansas? and The Wrecking Crew calls Sarah Palin’s new book a “prolonged, keening wail, larded with petty vindictiveness.” In addition to being a…

This week’s Pitch and 14 things we learned this week

Former Honeywell workers are experiencing major health problems. This week’s Pitch feature, “Kansas City’s Nuclear Fallout,” talks to the people suffering from the after effects of exposure to beryllium at the soon-to-be-shuttered plant. Also this week, Martin looks at Go Invest Wisely’s “piss-poor attempts at property management” in Kansas City. Ferruzza reviews the new hot restaurant Julian. Harper has a…

They found Holman lying in the street with a .22 caliber gunshot wound to his chest and a spent shell…

Comment of the Week

Macramae brings many horrible memories flooding back to me. Not this bad (allegedly), but bad nonetheless. This week, the Crap Archivist relived his own tortured memories while getting tangled up in Creating With Macrame. Damn if the guy on the right doesn’t look like he’s wearing one of Chewbacca’s relatives. Here comes some Star Wars nerdery courtesy of one of…

Waldo sexual assault scammers sentenced

A federal judge sentenced the three pea brains sexual assault scammers who cooked up — and botched — a scheme to defraud a local car dealership. Julie Bernet, 39, of Bacyrus, Kansas, and Lindsey Crawford, 24, of KCMO, hatched a bizarre plan to gold-dig a big sexual assault settlement out of a former employer by staging an assault/sexual assault (want…

This week’s “Best of Fat City”

We’ve decided here in Fat City that eggnog season starts a few weeks after Walgreen’s and CVS pharmacies put out their Christmas merchandise — you know, mid-October — and that no one needs to make the concoction at home anymore (using those cute punch sets that you can find at flea markets and estate sales) since it’s easier to have…

Friday Book Review: Jeffrey Koterba’s Inklings

Picture the young artist, dreaming of becoming an editorial cartoonist. He’s working hard: drawing for a weekly newspaper in the Omaha suburb of Bellevue, placing his pieces in a few small-town papers around Nebraska, constantly submitting his work to the Omaha World-Herald, only to be rejected. With encouragement from Kansas City Star cartoonist Lee Judge, at the time practically just…

Rock of Pages: All You Need to Know About the Music Business

Given that it’s now in its seventh edition Donald S. Passman’s All You Need to Know About the Music Business looks like a pretty safe investment, . The music landscape has certainly changed since All You Need to Know… was first released in 1991. However, what hasn’t changed is the fact that many artists go into the music industry as…

KS court upholds murder conviction, overturns attempted rape sentence in Ali Kemp murder

The Kansas Supreme Court ruled today that the man convicted of murdering Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old University of Kansas student from Johnson County, in a public swimming pool pump room in 2002 could not also be guilty of attempted rape without violating the “double jeopardy” protection of the Fifth Amendment. In 2005, Kemp’s murderer, Benjamin Appleby (aka Teddy Hoover), was…

Going out for turkey day? Plan now!

Who makes it at home anymore? Plenty of restaurants will be open on Thanksgiving Day this year. The holiday wasn’t always a big business day for the restaurant industry; until the late 1980s, Thanksgiving was considered a holiday when most people preferred eating — and cooking — at home. But anyone who has ever hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for the…

Palin’s Going Rogue at the Fishtank: Now with video!

As we’ve thoroughly documented here, last night Kansas City’s favorite performers gathered to declaim from Sarah Palin’s new book, Amelia Bedelia Runs For Office. This time, Amelia’s literal-mindedness accidentally destroys the Republican Party for a whole generation! Also, she tries to teach herself to fly and goes kerplump on an Alaskan boardwalk full of Alaskan history and decency. Here are…

Selig promises Royals an All-Star Game

mlb.com It looks like the K is all but announced as the site of the 2012 All-Star Game. The MLB Owner’s meeting just wrapped in Chicago, and Commissioner Bud Selig hinted that Kauffman Stadium’s recent renovation has impressed a lot of people. As a small digression, can you think of a better name for commissioner of baseball than “Bud.” For…
