Find your sandwich soulmate

You can tell a lot about a man or woman by his or her sandwich order. And might replace the Zodiac as your predictor of happiness in a potential relationship. Hellman’s and Best Foods sponsored a recent study to try to match lunch selections with personality types. The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation analyzed the sandwich orders of…

Rachel Fracassa’s recipe for summer gazpacho

As tomato season winds down, soft and pulpy tomatoes lend themselves to soup. Raw food chef Rachel Fracassa has a straightforward recipe for turning your leftover heirloom tomatoes into a summer gazpacho. Preparation should only be about 20 minutes, most of which you’ll spend chopping and blending. If you’ve got a big batch or small eaters, you can also try…

Civilian Review: Vans Warped Tour 2009

Editor’s Note: In response to a challenge that arose out of the comments section of my Black Francis review, stout and hearty music fan That Guy (known to his friends as Bryan Hobby), took to the hills and dales of Sandstone to review the Vans Warped Tour from his own perspective. I commend his bravery and determination. Someone get That…

Brother Ali’s new record, Us, is out September 22 on Rhymesayers Entertainment, featuring guest appearances from Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition. Rhymesayers is noted for its strong hip-hop that goes beyond the “bitches, blunts, and 40s” mentality, with such acts as P.O.S. and Atmosphere. Brother Ali plays the Granada in Lawrence on September 27…

Concert Review: the Vans Warped Tour 2009

What with the weather and everything yesterday morning, I wasn’t too sure as to whether or not Warped Tour 2009 would be worth attending. The idea of standing in the middle of an amphitheater parking lot all day during a torrential downpour isn’t exactly my idea of a perfect summer day. However, by the time I hit Tonganoxie on my…

Reporter’s Notebook: You, too, can play air guitar like the pros

Eric “Mean” Melin is Kansas City’s hope for air-guitar greatness (read more in this week’s feature, “Air Guitar Hero”). His airness began 19 years ago at Kansas State University. Let’s time warp to 1990 when a long-haired metalhead known as simply Eric Melin demonstrated how to air guitar. OK. Trust me, he’s a lot more experienced now. He better be….

Brownback lies about cap-and-trade

U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback is spouting nonsense in an effort to denigrate a bill intended to halt climate change. In a taped address to the Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Brownback recently warned that cap-and-trade legislation in Congress would slap a family of four with a $1,500 annual increase in energy costs. But as Media Matters points out, Brownback’s $1,500 increase…

Kris Kobach vs. Stephen Colbert

Kris Kobach is already the darling of conservative television hosts, appearing frequently on shows like Lou Dobbs Tonight and The O’Reilly Factor. This week, though, Kobach will sit opposite a pundit revered by liberals — comedian Stephen Colbert. After The New York Times profiled the UMKC law professor (and Republican hopeful for Kansas Secretary of State), The Colbert Report invited…

Posnanski is leaving the Star for SI … sort of

Sports writer Joe Posnanski is kind of sort of leaving The Kansas City Star for Sports Illustrated. JoPo made the announcement on his Twitter account last night. Here’s his goodbye blog post. And here’s his goodbye column. JoPo says he’s not moving away and he’ll still write for the Star, but you know how that goes. Good luck with the…

Blue Star Motorcycles opens second shop on Main Street

We welcomed the January opening of Blue Star Motorcycles at 5508 Troost Avenue with the blog headline, “Bikers will save Troost.” Overly optimistic? Perhaps. Luckily, Ross Thompson, one of the shop’s three co-owners, came to the business a bit more jaded. “Revitalizing a neighborhood is a process,” Thompson says. “We knew that having our business on Troost would help Troost….

Stop One: Merriam, KS Tonight from 9 p.m. to midnight at Denny’s in Merriam (9001 W. 63rd Street), your dad will be digesting his Moons Over My Hammy, sipping his coffee and wondering what the hell all these kids with body piercings and two-tone hair are doing in his favorite Tuesday night spot. 175 workers bought out at GM’s Fairfax plant

General Motors bought out 175 workers at the automaker’s Fairfax plant, KCTV Channel 5 reports. The workers took the deal Monday; they were part of 6,000 buyouts. The New York Times says the struggling auto giant will shed another 7,500 by the end of the year. And the bleeding continues. Categories: News Tags: Fairfax GM plant, General Motors

Wired’s 10 Space-Rocking Astronaut Songs

Wired put up a list of 10 space-rocking astronaut songs” in honor of the return of the astronauts with the shuttle Endeavour. Now, while I can totally support their inclusion of the Pixies’ “Planet of Sound” and — of course — Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” I cannot brook the fact that they include Billy Thorpe’s “Children of the Sun” at the…

The chance to play winemaker

The sun sets over the vineyard where your grapes are growing. They’re harvested and pressed before being carefully aged in oak casks. These are the dreams of those who have begun to consider retirement. Well, them, and Korean pop music producers. A recent Bloomberg article visits the Bordeaux vineyard of California-based Crushpad, a custom-wine company that has been helping clients…

Chiefs sign Amani Toomer … six years too late

Amani Toomer signed a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN reports. The 34-year-old wide receiver is coming off one of his least productive seasons (48 catches for 580 yards) with the New York Giants — his best season was 2003.  And he’s old balls at 35. But Toomer will probably start because there aren’t a lot of options…

New releases, Tuesday, August 4

Slim pickings again this week, but there are a few new releases worth checking out. Iron Age’s The Sleeping Eye is perfect for fans of Fucked Up. This Texas band mixes elements of hardcore and psych rock, although not as adeptly as their Canadian counterparts. The songs are fairly epic, and bear more than a passing resemblance to Mastodon, sounding…

You too can afford lobster on just pennies a day

Lobster feels decadent. But right now, decadent is what’s cheap thanks to the laws of supply and demand in the lobster market. The crustaceans are currently selling at wholesale prices of $2.25 a pound. Consider that lobster was selling for $10 a pound in 2006. Even our spiny friends should have thought twice before molting and taking on a shell…

If you insist on making waffles at home, you might get into the real meaning of this holiday by watching Imitation of Life, one of the few American movies where pancakes and waffles mix with…
