The Top Ten Cafes to write a Novel

A table for writing at Brookside’s Aixois; it’s not a literary Mecca like La Coupole in Paris … yet Ernest Hemingway ate here. In Kansas City, that is. Yes, he lived here and he liked the food. A 1923 short story by Hemingway features a description of a meal of sea slugs he polished off in a Kansas City Chinese…

Is your kid in a gang? Here are the signs

It’s probably no surprise to hear gang members are getting younger, but anti-gang education in elementary schools? Yes, it’s like that now. “We used to think if we produce information and work in partnership with the district that we could get our message out there in the high school and it would be all right,” said Major Jan Zimmerman, commander…

What’s in season: Pole beans

Dragon Tongue and rattlesnake may sound like characters in the new GI Joe movie — but you’re more likely to find them at the organic market. These are two of the badass pole bean varietals that are currently in season. One of the few aptly named vegetables, pole beans are grown on a pole or trellis. “These can be eaten…

D/Will and David Seume live collabo at the Pitch Music Showcase

Though local rapper Sephiroth’s impromptu performance with Mark Lowrey got all the blog attention hither and yon, it wasn’t the only genre-jumping hip-hop performance under the sponsor tent last Thursday at the 2009 Pitch Music Showcase. Catching up on my RSS feeds just now, I stopped by D/Will’s blog, where, days ago (sigh), the hometown hip-hop producer and MC posted…

Peel n’ Taste, the new Scratch n’ Sniff

Growing up, the scratch n’ sniff concept was mind-blowing — that just by rubbing a nail across the front of a printed sticker, we could smell chocolate. Well, today’s kids are more sophisticated. So, Sunny D has introduced Peel n’ Taste samples to help sell a new line of smoothies. Welcome to the world of “sensory marketing,” where companies are…

East Side Story: Vee’s Sweets and Treats

Today marks the official eight-month anniversary of Vee’s Sweets and Treats, the storefront bake shop at 8005 Paseo where the owner, Allie Vee Toney, sells what may be the biggest apple fritter in town — it’s about 8-inches in diameter and as thick as a paperback novel — as well as doughnuts, iced Long Johns, an array of luscious-looking cookies and her…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, August 12

%{}% An attempt to hit for the Belgian beer cycle ends victoriously at Dish Pizza in Liberty, Missouri, which apparently has some serious Tuesday beer specials. A review of St. Lupulin — a new extra pale ale and seasonal offering from Colorado’s ODell Brewing Co.   The Atlantic’s cross-country food tour stops in Kansas City and weighs in on Arthur…

Throwback MP3 of the Week: Ruskabank, “How I Spent My Summer Vacation”

This week’s Throwback MP3 is actually a two-fer of Manhattan bands. Not only do you get the Little Apple’s ska-rockers Ruskabank, you get them doing a cover of Truck Stop Love’s classic “How I Spent My Summer Vacation.” The track was recorded for an aborted TSL tribute comp that never got off the ground. Bits and pieces of it float…

Eric “Mean” Melin to play Pitch Music Awards Ceremony

I’ve been watching all white-knuckled and nail-bitey the coverage of local air guitar superstar Eric “Mean” Melin. I was bummed to learn yesterday that he didn’t make it past the finals — but glad to see that he’s not giving up. And now, the Wayward Blog is overjoyed to announce that Mean Melin is bringing his unstoppable airness to the…

Mutual Musicians Foundation announces Bird Lives Festival

This August 29 and 30, there’ll be no sleepin’ at 18th and Vine (not that there ever is sleepin’ down there on a Saturday night) as the Mutual Musicians Foundation celebrates the birthday of immortal superlegend and KC native son Charles “Yardbird” Parker with 24+ hours of music and ceremony. Here’s the schedule so far. Call the Foundation at 816-471-5212…

Feds move in on supposedly righteous bank

Federal regulators have taken action against a money-losing Kansas thrift controlled by Don Bell, a supporter of right-wing causes who insists that God called him to the banking business. On Friday, Bell signed a cease-and-desist order with the Office of Thrift Supervision. The order amounts to an admission that Olathe-based Security Savings Bank has been mismanaged. Bell and the bank’s…

Denis Clemente totally copies Larry Bird’s McDonald’s commercial

Kansas State’s Denis Clemente is too late to collect Michael Jordan’s Big Mac and fries. Check out the K-State guard doing the old Larry Bird off the scoreboard, off the floor shot. Yeah, yeah. Larry Bird did it in this McDonald’s commercial back in the ’90s. Let’s see him throw it off the expressway, over the river, off the billboard,…

Weary Kansas drivers will know where to buy Naughty Neighbors

The sex industry is facing hard times due to Internet freebies (just like newspapers!), but count a win for sex shops in Kansas where Attorney General Steve Six won’t appeal a district court ruling that blocked the enforcement of a law outlawing adult entertainment businesses from advertising on the Sunflower State’s highways. “Given the state’s budget challenges, it would be…

This guy (allegedly) shot at police Saturday

The guy on the right, 17-year-old Derrick W. Forte, allegedly fired shots at police Saturday morning and ended up getting himself shot, police say. Jackson County prosecutors charged Forte Tuesday with first-degree assault on a law enforcement officer and armed criminal action. Court docs say police received a “suspicious person” call, so they went to investigate. They found Forte hanging…

7′-tall Ace Frehley-impersonating Taylor Swift menaces wee Keith Urban

Thanks to alert E!Online reader and country music fan Cletus Paisley for alerting us to this hilarious celebrity prank that happened right in our own backyard. Apparently this past Saturday at Sprint Center, a tiny Luke Wilson lookalike got up on stage and played upbeat, guitar-driven pop music and called it country. What’ll they think of next!? Wait … what’s…
