Kansas City police have identified the man fatally stabbed last Thursday in the 3800 block of Olive. They say the victim is 51-year-old Anthony L. Mosley. Last week, police said Mosely was apparently robbed and stabbed at his home by an invited guest. Mosley was taken to a local hospital where he died. The victim’s name has yet to be…

Josephine Collective disbands

No lie — it’s been fun writing about Josephine Collective. Over the past few years, the screechy emo pop band from Johnson County developed a sizable — mostly teenage — fanbase, got signed to a major label, experienced a little backlash, partied hard and (some members) exhibited occasional signs of egomania. But it’s all over now. Well, the Collective part…

Garrett Matthew Mason accused of stabbing two teen girls to death

Earlier today, 17-year-old Garrett Matthew Mason appeared in court on first-degree murder charges for the deaths of 14-year-old Kylie M. Leyva and 18-year-old Anne E. Reed. Mason faces two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action. Police believe Mason fatally stabbed the teenage girls Sunday evening in Nevada, Missouri, 95 miles south of Kansas City. Mason…

Tonight: Flannigan’s Right Hook, Spin Magazine Party, Spin Pizza Party

If your Memorial Day Weekend was anything like the Wayward Son’s, then tonight is for shoring up, burning the laundry, throwing away the dishes and reaming out the liver. But for nightlife wolves, there’s plenty of interesting shit to see and do, particularly in Westport. Stately, svelte Irish rock trio Flannigan’s Right Hook is playing at the Dark Horse. The…

Kansas man doesn’t want to pay $275 fine for kicking gull’s ass

No one steals ice cream from Dragan Djuric’s wife. Not without receiving a severe beat down, which one really unlucky gull found out on New Year’s Eve in Laguna Beach. Djuric and his wife were enjoying frozen treats when a greedy gull swooped in and stole his wife’s ice cream. Being a man of action, Djuric grabbed a stick and…

Former Superintendent choking on karma

It wasn’t long ago that we gave you an update on the Kansas City School District’s former super Anthony Amato. The short version: flaunt huge unearned ego, spend vast sums of money on tests with no proven value, leave for new job under black cloud of district resentment, repeat process at new school. It seems the cycle’s winding down again, because…

What do the U.S., Indonesia and Palau have in common?

If you guessed a drinking age of 21, you are correct. It’s the oldest drinking age in the world. I couldn’t find the reason for the high drinking age in the island nation of Palau (population 21,000), but I’m guessing it’s because the country only became independent from the U.S. fifteen years ago and still hasn’t gotten around to changing…

SKY Syndicate brings streetball to Penn Valley

Even as they warmed up, bouncing to the Lil’ Wayne blaring from the speakers and draining three-pointers from six feet beyond the arc, players from the nationally touring SKY Streetball Syndicate put on a show Sunday night at Penn Valley Community College. SKY’s High Rizer There were animal dunks from Mr. 720 — the kind of acrobatics that made spectators lean back in their seats, laughing and…

Foraging for food: a more in-depth look

Last week in Breakfast Buffet I linked to a Forbes article on foraging for spring-time food. It was written in the first-person about a trip to the Catskill Mountains and contained mentions of cattails and mushrooms galore but no actual pictures. This line had me worried: “one cap of the well-named Destroying Angel mushroom, abundant in the spring, can kill…

Looking for meat at the Great American Barbecue Festival

Ah, the scent of smoked flesh slathered in barbecue sauce! That aroma wafted throughout the Capitol Federal Park at Sandstone last weekend during the Great American BBQ Festival. The clubs editor and I dropped in on the meat party late in the festival, midday on Sunday. By then, some of the vendors were already running out of supplies. We stopped…

Concert Review: Barclay Martin Ensemble at Crosstown Station

Clad in a loose-fitting suit, Barclay Martin took the stage at Crosstown Station with the other three members of the Barclay Martin Ensemble at a little after 9 p.m. this past Friday Night. The wardrobe choice was far from ironic. Martin and company were simply prepared for what would turn out to be a low-key, classy affair. (Martin, from my…

Concert Review: Pierced Arrows

REVIEW BY DANNY ALEXANDER Three generations of musicians played the Record Bar Monday night, and the show couldn’t have sounded much more vital and coherent. Ironically, the most retro band of the bunch was Wrong Crowd!, the band with the youngest musicians. Formerly the Black Taratunals, they played a solid, high energy set of garage punk that might have been…

Another reason not to use propane

While grilling out over this wondrous weekend, you might have noticed your propane not lasting as long as it used to. It wasn’t a figment of your imagination. Very quietly, propane suppliers have been cutting the number of pounds they actually put in their tanks. When you buy a 20-pound propane tank, it contains 20 pounds of propane. But when…

Wrap it up, KC. Men’s Health gives KC a D- for STDs

This is bad, bad news. Men’s Health ranked the sexual health of 101 cities — looking at reports of gonorrhea, syphillis and chlamydia to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as county data on HIV mortality rates — and Kansas City finished an extremely sorry 82nd place (and under the heading “taking your chances”) with a D-…
