Yesterday’s protest: Anti-violence camp out at City Hall

Thursday was day two of community activist Rachel Riley’s three-day camp out in front of City Hall. About a dozen people held signs, grilled food and talked about the city’s violent, crime-infested east side. Charles Ferruzza on “Walt Bodine Show” today

As he is every other Friday, Charles will be on Walt’s show today at 10 a.m. to discuss restaurants and food. The last discussion on hot dogs seemed to generate quite a stir. Suddenly it seems as if every blog is talking about franks. Today’s episode should be no different as the critics examine dips. Hummus, avocado, cheese and maybe…

See some art in the Crossroads. It’s not First Friday, but what the heck? Rhythmized Textiles from…

Now Open: C. Withers Restaurant & Catering

A couple of my friends had raved to me about the new restaurant at 3613 Broadway, a home-style barbeque restaurant called C. Withers Restaurant & Catering. But my friend Richard Strong, who lives in the neighborhood, practically demanded that I eat there. “The food is fantastic. And so inexpensive!” The family-owned business is located in the narrow storefront last occupied…

What does Trent Reznor do before the show?

Why, he takes his lady to the Apple Store! Alert, iPhone-equipped Pitch contributor Rich Sharp snapped this photo of the Rez browsing for Macs earlier today in Chicago with his fiancée, Mariqueen Maandig, of the band West Indian Girl. That right there is wassup. And, in case you missed it, we reviewed Nine Inch Nails’ performance last night at the…

Friday is National Coq au Vin Day

Tomorrow — Friday, May 29 — is National Coq au Vin Day! The Food Lover’s Companion describes this classic French dish as “pieces of chicken, mushroom, onions, bacon or salt pork, and various herbs cooked together with red wine.” One of the finest versions of Coq au Vin (pronounced coke-oh-vahn) that I’ve tasted in Kansas City is served at Cafe Provence…

Pat Roberts just says ‘no’ to Sotomayor

Pat Roberts called “first!” today. Roberts is the first senator to pledge a “no” vote to Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. Earlier today, Roberts told KCMO Talk Radio 710’s Chris Stigall that no way, no how would he vote for her: “I voted no in 1998. I did not feel she was appropriate on the appeals court. Since that…

Tigers and Jayhawks oh my!

A fictional bird versus what appears to be a large Beanie Babie The Border War Showdown doesn’t exactly have the same fire to it as it did in the days of John Brown and William Quantrill. Not only is it no longer a war, it has official sponsors. But MU and KU grads still feel strongly about whipping up on…

Jason Whitlock overshares again …

Grimace-shaped Kansas City Star columnist Jason Whitlock likes to share … sometimes a little too much. Today’s column about officiating in the NBA included more information on the psyche and extra, extra, extra large shorts of self-proclaimed “Big Sexy” than we cared to know (see bold): Since then, the NBA has been the super-hot girlfriend I always suspect of sleeping…

Berbiglia’s alcohol-fueled extraganza tonight

%{}% I was in the Berbiglia’s at 1014 W. 103rd Street trying to pick up a bottle of Boulevard’s Two Jokers. They were out of it (boo), but I did see that Zon has arrived for the summer (eh). I also noticed the staff was already setting up for tonight’s “Summer Wine, Spirits and Beer Tasting Extravaganza!” The two-hour event…

Where is it? It’s here!

No one ventured even a guess as to the location of this giant duck, featured in Monday’s Where Is It? question. And that’s completely understandable, since it was a tough one. This wing-whirling mallard is perched on a pole in the parking lot of the McDonald’s in Mound City, Missouri — which is also the home of Quacker’s Bar &…
