Daily Briefs: Your new dress code

%{}% The new Power & Light District dress code began yesterday, and all patrons will now be be required to wear those little black shorts Henry Rollins used to wear when he fronted Black Flag. Button-down dress shirts must be TUCKED IN to little black Henry Rollins shorts. The only permissible hats are the race-neutral Darth Vader helmets which truly…

Hallmark cutting between 200 and 250 jobs in Kansas City

About a year ago, we wrote about Hallmark blaming layoffs on competition while banking $4.4 billion in revenues. That story seems just as relevant today since Hallmark announced it will cut between 550 and 750 jobs in the U.S. — reportedly between 200 and 250 jobs at Hallmark’s KC headquarters — over the next six months. Hallmark cited falling sales…

Phil Spector found guilty, will be sentenced to at least 18 years

The L.A. Times reports that a Los Angeles Superior Court jury has just determined that actress Lana Clarkson did not shoot herself in voluminously coiffured pop producer Phil Spector’s house but that Spector himself did the shooting. The 69-year-old Wall of Sound inventor has been convicted of second-degree murdering Clarkson on February 3, 2003. He is expected to be sentenced…

Electric Six entertains the gay bar, er, Record Bar

The first time I saw Electric Six, way back in 2003 at the Black Cat in Washington, D.C., I left early. I wondered, who the hell does this guy think he is? “This guy” was, of course, Dick Valentine, the Michigan band’s crude and cheesy frontman. Whenever I saw the band next, I decided that his pasted-on smile, pseudo-political jokes…

KCPD cuts gay members’ health insurance benefits

Last Thursday afternoon, members of the Kansas City Police Department received an e-mail with the subject line: “Police Budget Update.” The “Extra Daily Informant” explained how the department is going to make ends meet with a $15 million cut to the budget that begins May 1. Chief Jim Corwin, the memo noted, had tapped a 12-person task force earlier in…

Consumers Union, 29 groups ask Sebelius to veto hormone milk bill

Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports and Consumerist, has sent a long letter to Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius regarding Kansas House Bill 2121. Twenty-nine groups involved in agricultural and food production added their signatures to a copy and sent it as well. The letters have to do with milk labeling. HB 2121 would require producers who say their cows were…

Comings and goings in The Legends

A month after a western-themed restaurant and a Mexican-themed restaurant closed at The Legends, get ready to welcome … a western-themed restaurant and Mexican-themed restaurant. Going into the space that was Cantina #1 (and before that Corona Cantina #1) is Los Cabos, which describes itself as “specializing in the bold and distinctive flavors from the beaches of Mexico,” and featuring…

Check out Crime Scene KC’s ‘Morgue File’

Cool vintage photo from Crime Scene KC’s “Morgue File” of a Leawood patrolman inspecting a pellet gun. If you haven’t checked out the “Morgue File,” it’s worth a look. My favorite: This classified ad for the King’s Den. Categories: News Tags: Crime Scene KC

Concert Review: The Black Kids, Mates of State at the Beaumont, April 13, 2009

BY CALEB GOELLNER Homecoming shows tend to have a polarizing effect on successful touring acts. Much like walking the halls of a former high school, it’s a mixed bag of nostalgia and trauma that returning performers either love or loathe. Fortunately for Kansas City, the former Lawrencians of Mates of State were all smiles, harmonies and appreciation. The show began…

Hoodie-wearing man terrorizes Kansas City by reading in the park

If you see a guy wearing a hoodie and reading in the park, you might want to call 911. The hoodie-wearing man might just be a terrorist, if you believe the “Seven Signs of Terrorism,” a creepy six-minute video that gives the clues to a potential terrorist attack right here in Kansas City. If you go to PrepareMetroKC.org, you can…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, 4/14

%{}% Information on lots of obscure beers now in liquor stores and those soon coming, like Longshots by Sam Adams. Local casinos are drawing more people than ever, yet revenue is down because people are on tighter budgets. The question not asked — should people on tight budgets go to casinos in the first place? Analysts believe Denny’s is cheapening…

KCUR airs audio documentary of Walt Bodine, classic audio archives now online

Octogenarian radio icon Walt Bodine’s historical broadcasts are now online. Bodine donated a handful of historical tapes to the Marr Sound Archives, including Bodine’s coverage of the 1951 Kansas City flood, the 1957 Ruskin Heights tornado and the 1968 riots. The tapes also feature interviews with Robert F. Kennedy. Real Audio isn’t working for me — just like TV Barn,…

UCM bowlers lose to guy dressed like Jon Cryer

Central Missouri’s bowling team lost in the finals of the NCAA tournament held in suburban Detroit over the weekend. The Jennies fell to mighty Nebraska, who wore virtually identical uniforms, in the ESPN-televised match.  The Jennies, featured in The Pitch a year ago, were valiant in defeat. Seeded sixth in an eight-team tournament, UCM beat three teams ranked higher in…

None So Vile: Of God and Goats

Tonight’s Riot Room bill originally included both At the Left Hand of God and Christ Hate, a pairing that, judging by band names alone, seemed to promise conflict, especially given that Christ Hate destroyed Bibles on stage during its February Riot Room show. But the holy war has been averted, not only due to Christ Hate dropping off the bill…

New dress code in effect in Power & Light District

A kinda, sorta new dress code starts today in the Power & Light District. All the fuss and really, what’s changed? Doesn’t sound like much, judging by this KCTV Channel 5 story. Businesses can no longer define the length of hair, clothes and shoes that customers wear, but they can still ban baggy clothes and require business attire. Enjoy PBR,…

Why, Billy Bob, WHY?

I’ve seen one or two interviews with Billy Bob Thornton in which the ACTOR and Boxmaster he was just odd, but in this video, currently making the rounds, he’s a complete passive-aggressive asshole to this Canadian radio interviewer — and weird and random on top of it. It seems like some wires get crossed in his skull. As a result,…

Lady Liberty at the K

Looks like the Liberty Tax people are working at Kauffman Stadium. Nah, another opening day photo from our publisher. Give me your drunks, your homers, your long-suffering masses yearning to be victorious. Categories: News Tags: Kansas City Roayls, Kauffman Stadium, Statue of Liberty

Rainy days, Mondays, sorbet…

What I’ve got they used to call the blues…wait a minute, isn’t that a lyric from an old Carpenters song called Rainy Days and Mondays? Anyway, the other day, I was walking around Lee’s Summit — no, not like some “kind of lonely clown,” will someone please get these song lyrics out of my head?) — and peeking through storefront…
