Cousin of Raytown homicide victim posts tribute on YouTube

Wow. Never thought I’d see this. A cousin of Andre Jones, one of the four Raytown homicide victims, posted this video on YouTube from Jones’ visitation. Jones’ cousin asks anybody with info to come forward. Gotta give TKC credit for finding this one. Categories: News Tags: Andre D. Jones, homicides, raytown

The newest nut crisis: pistachio panic?

Flickr: Lolo_ Many radio and TV broadcasts this morning led with this story: a major recall of roasted pistachios because of fears of potential salmonella contimation. The good news: No illnesses have been reported, thus far, due to a reported salmonella strain discovered during routine tests by Kraft at a California food processing plant. But the peanut crisis, earlier this…

Operation Rescue president piles on family of plane crash victims

%{}% I’m really sick of the abortion wars. George Tiller gets acquitted, then the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts announces new allegations against the Wichita abortion doctor. Then come the howls that Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius isn’t fit to be secretary of Health and Human Services … because she’s for abortion rights. Even after she signs a law that…

Former BPU general manager Daggett sues utility

Leon Daggett, the Kansas City, Kansas, Board of Public of Public Utilities’ former general manager, is suing the utility for allegedly breaching his resignation agreement. In the lawsuit filed on March 13, Daggett alleges that BPU board members Mary Gonzales and Loretta Colombel breached his contract by making disparaging remarks about him. Daggett claims Colombel bad mouthed him at a…

Tonight! Maps & Atlases at the Jackpot

Chicago’s Maps & Atlases bridge an unlikely divide between math-rock (being the domain of mostly dudes obsessing over Mars Volta’s YouTube footage) and indie-pop (the comfy cocoon of under-exercised Belle-and-Sebastian-loving library rats). Maps & Atlases toy with your inner metronome with all kinds of outlandish time signatures, stop-starts, midsong interjections, and waterfalls of guitar arpeggios cascading toward organized chaos. Amazingly,…

Aw no! Harper’s on the Miles Bonny Show AGAIN!

For the 11th episode of The Miles Bonny Show, your host-with-the-most was going to interview Chuck D. But the requests for an encore of episode 9, which featured yours truly, Jason Fiddlyfanks Harper, came pouring in like a biblical flood, and Miles had no choice to invite me back. Behold! The Miles Bonny Show #011 – TRAILER – Jason SPEAKS!!…

Intercontinental Hotel keeps some of the frills

What was the line that French queen Marie Antoinette allegedly uttered upon hearing that the starving populace was begging for bread? “Let them eat cake?” Fancy desserts — fancy everything — is fast going out of style during this economic climate. Newsweek is reporting that fine dining establishments around the world are cutting out frills. The frills might include tablecloths…

Republic Tigers frontman Kenn Jankowski has a bone for you.

Apparently being Kansas City rock royalty ain’t always a lucrative deal. Citing the need to pay rent before his band goes on tour with Travis this Tuesday, last night Republic Tigers leader Kenn Jankwoski posted a MySpace bulletin drawing friends’ attention to this Craigslist post, which lists Jankowski’s Yamaha trombone for sale for $175, case and cleaning kit included. The…

Guilty Pleasures: Lobsterfest at Red Lobster

My friend Franklin has a secret. Franklin’s really fussy about fresh seafood, but he has this thing for Red Lobster, though he won’t admit that to just everyone. You see, Red Lobster is considered very lowbrow among the foodie set. And that’s exactly the reason I like it. Admittedly, I don’t eat at Red Lobster restaurants very often because there’s almost…

Wash away the pounds and other crazy notions

I’d guess most people have a friend who’s always on a diet. When it comes to weight loss, dieters are willing to do crazy things and quack inventors are happy to oblige. Neatorama has tabulated the 10 craziest diets in history and yes, at one point in time, some people did believe they could wash away the pounds. The pseudo…

Dear Boone’s Farm…

I must admit to having a brief, wild love-affair with the pseudo-bum-wine Boone’s Farm. How brief? One night to be exact. The next morning I felt like there was acid in my eyeballs and the Marching Cobras in my stomach. The experience was my first with “wine” and I didn’t touch vino for another two years. But then I’m not…

Incoming: Rancid, show at Beaumont and new album

Right on the heels of the June 2 release of their new (seventh) album, Let the Dominoes Fall, punk icons Rancid are coming to the Beaumont. They’ll be hitting the club’s outside decks on June 12 with support from Rise Against. If you’re a superfan — and you’re on this new thing called “MySpace” — then you can help the…

Killa City: KCMO homicide No. 27

Kansas City recorded its 27th homicide today when a man was found dead in the 5500 block of Woodland Avenue. View Larger Map Kansas City Police haven’t released the man’s name or how he was killed. A family member found the victim — a black male, approximately 25-years-old. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. As always, if you…

Daily Briefs: Big phat e-sack of cyber-mail iComments

%{}% “Blathering fucking mess:” I’ve always looked at Daily Briefs as a kind of “give-and-take” with readers, like an informal rap session with a hip Christian youth minister, whereby I post whatever is the snottiest 500 to 700 words I’m capable of writing first thing in the morning, and commenters respond by calling me a douchebag. It’s a two-way street,…

Places you wouldn’t expect to find a Shanin & Parks shirt

Recently, 4:20 enthusiasts Shanin & Parks have begun fobbing off T-shirts to anyone willing to whisper “cooter” to them. We were shocked to see these shirts turning up everywhere. For example, we never expected to see a Shanin & Parks shirt … selling pussy willows. Categories: News Tags: KMBZ, Shanin & Parks

Buy your cigarettes now. Cigarette tax two days away

If you smoke, this post won’t be news because you’ve noticed the price of cigarettes jump in the past two weeks. Tobacco companies are getting ready for the increased federal tobacco tax by raising their own prices. (Can someone explain how tobacco companies raising the price of a pack 80 cents will help consumers “adjust,” as the companies have put…
