‘I don’t know if it’s a midlife crisis or what, but I’ve decided that I want to get f*cked in the ass once in my life’

Dear Dan: I’m a 59-year-old man in good health. For basically my whole adult life, I’ve had this problem during intercourse with a woman of (1) being very quick to come and (2) having a too intense “cringey” sensation when I come. This has led to often going soft at the prospect of intercourse. This too-intense feeling makes me stop…

Rico Dejoie is bringing three nights of punk rock festivities to KC with this weekend’s Hooligan Holiday

For the last 24 years, Rico Dejoie, owner of Boss Vintage and show-going raconteur behind Boss Hooligan Soundsystem, has provided a holiday celebration for those in the punk community who might not otherwise have one. It’s called Hooligan Holiday. But while this year’s incarnation features three nights of music — including ska band Hepcat’s first area show in over 20…

St. Luke’s wants to preserve the residential neighborhood between the Plaza and Westport — by building half-million dollar homes there

Recently, the foundation connected to St. Luke’s Health System has announced plans to start construction on 30 new homes in the neighborhood west of its flagship hospital in Kansas City. The single-family houses, which are expected to sell for around half a million dollars, will “enhance and revitalize” the neighborhood, according to a news release from the St. Luke’s Foundation. The announcement,…

A conversation with Matt Flegel of Canadian post-punk act Preoccupations; show with Protomartyr Saturday at RecordBar

Matt Flegel, bassist and vocalist of Canadian post-punk band Preoccupations, was in a Montreal recording studio when I called him this past October. He’d been “crashed out” there, working on new music, and hadn’t left the building in two days, apparently. Since he and his bandmates left their day jobs, he says they grow bored quickly between tours and jump…

The demise of FilmStruck means it may be time for movie buffs to stock up on DVDs and Blu-Rays. We’ve got some recommendations.

When the streaming subscription service FilmStruck debuted just two years ago, it had a proposition that was fundamentally different than all of its competitors: unlimited online access to 100 years of film history, from classic Hollywood to groundbreaking indies to influential foreign titles. Chaplin, Bogie, Hepburn, Hitchcock, Bergman, Soderbergh, the jump-cut chic-cool of the French New Wave — all in…

KCYoungBoss, Jaenki, Keep True, and more of the latest in local music videos

This post-Thanksgiving stretch is not a particularly productive one — too many holiday parties and festive events to distract us from sitting at a desk and answering emails. We say: embrace it. Why not get yourself a small party going with this collection of local artists and their latest videos in the latest Cine Local? Keep True, “Living” The drummer for…

Medical marijuana is legal in Missouri. What’s next?

Last month, Missourians voted in favor of medical marijuana, making the Show-Me State the 31st in the country that will legally sell weed in some form.Amendment 2 drew an overwhelming majority —  66 percent  — despite the fact it was one of three marijuana items on the ballot, which made for a confusing voting day rife with complexity.New Approach Missouri — a pro-medical marijuana advocacy group — has been working behind the…

‘Am I just bipolar and kinky? Are the two related somehow?’

Dear Dan: I’m a 30-year-old, Asian American, hetero-flexible cis woman. I’m also newly diagnosed with bipolar II. I’m on medication — the doctor is trying to figure that out — but no talk therapy for right now, as my last therapist wasn’t great and I haven’t managed to find a new one. My question for you is regarding the relationship…
