Champagne at the WWI Museum, an Ethiopian Shabbat and more: KC’s food and drink events for December 3-9
Wednesday, December 5
Tonight at Lawrence Beer Company (826 Pennsylvania Avenue) is the debut of its first wine selection at a party that runs from 4 to 11 p.m. The wine, a Malbec, was made in collaboration with Ad Astra Selections under the eye of well-known winemaker Pablo Durigutti. LFK Malbec will be on special for $6 per glass, with a portion of all proceeds going to charity. No reservations are required.
Thursday, December 6
Operation Uncorked!, tonight at the World War I Museum and Memorial (2 Memorial Drive), is a food- and drink-themed celebration of the centennial of the Armistice. An hour for small bites and drinks from Rye Plaza, Extra Virgin, Ça Va, The Restaurant at 1900, and Corvino Supper Club & Tasting Room precedes a discussion from Master Sommelier Doug Frost about the relationship of the war to champagne. Tickets are $35 if you are a museum member, $50 if not. Pick up your tickets here.
Friday, December 7
Novel (1927 McGee Street) is open for just one lunch service per month, and December’s is today from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Among other items, tagliatelle with meatballs and parmesan, a pork belly banh mi, calamari with green chickpeas, and butternut squash are on the menu.
Tribe KC, an organization dedicated to connecting Jewish people to the community and vice versa, is holding its first Ethiopian Shabbat tonight at Blue Nile Cafe (20 East 5th Street), a night that also takes place during Hanukkah. The event is free and inspired by a new tradition started by Ethiopian Jews around the country. You can request a seat at the table via this link.
Saturday, December 8
Hit two birds with one yuletide stone today during the St. Nikolaus Day Celebration at KC Bier Company (310 West 79th Street). Get cookies and photos with Santa for the kids, and beer for everyone else. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
All semester long, culinary students at the Hospitality and Culinary Academy at Johnson County Community College (12345 Quivira) have been creating specialty dinners, each highlighting different regions of Italy. Tonight, the students’ earned knowledge comes to bear with a seven-course dinner featuring dishes from around the country. The event is deemed the “Chef’s Table Final,” and for $75 per person (which includes food and drink, but not gratuity), you can get in. Pick up your tickets via JCCC’s website.
Two sales going on today that could put a dent in your holiday shopping. First up, popular local baker JC Gregg is offering French macarons at a deep discount at Olive Tree KC (7044 West 105th Street). Get a dozen for $15. The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Also: hundreds of vintage and lightly used cookbooks will be up for sale at the Plaza branch of the Kansas City Public Library (4801 Main Street). The library is selling these treasures for $3-$5 apiece from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sunday, December 9
