Joaquin Phoenix’s rap documentary

Remember when Joaquin Phoenix told us that he’d quit acting to pursue a rap career, and acted kinda weird to David Letterman on the Late Show in early 2009, while sporting a full beard and sunglasses, and looking homeless? It was widely speculated that this was an elaborate Andy Kauffman-like stunt; but now, there’s a documentary coming out about it,…

How to make the perfect grilled cheese

Grilled cheeses are like the grills on which they are made. Once I’m in front of one, I don’t want anybody giving me advice, even if what I’m doing is decidedly wrong. But before I start my grill prep, I’m willing to listen to reason. And there’s no shortage of people ready to offer advice — consider this post on…

Spaghetti Western Death Carnival at Knuckleheads

Masturbating in a police interview room is a bad idea

Cortez Moorman apparently has a poor sense of timing. A couple of nights ago, Moorman was arrested for allegedly trying to rape and sodomize a 43-year-old woman. The 24-year-old agreed to talk to police. Fine by me. But when the cops left the room, Moorman is accused of blocking the door with his chair, whipping out his penis and masturbating…

Sam Brownback wants you to get religion. Turks, not so much

%{}% U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback wears his religion on his sleeve. He once washed the feet of a staffer at a farewell party, and he’s been known to hang with the likes of Lou Engle, a homosexuality-fixated evangelical who rocks back and forth when he speaks, in the manner of a true kook. Brownback would like to see America get…

Slice up that cantaloupe for cocktails and caviar

Watermelons snag your eye. It’s got green racing stripes and a bright red pulp that has made it a picnic staple. But in August, cantaloupe is the fruit that you should fall under the spell of your melon baller. Ripe melons are somewhere between beige and gray in color. If you run your finger along the side, the netting pattern…

Chiefs ranked 28th most successful NFL team; still better than Rams

The Kansas City Chiefs are worth $1.03 billion according to an analysis from Portfolio.com and Biz Journals. Still, that doesn’t make them successful, the study found. The economy nerds based their rankings on regular season winning percentage, average margin of victory, playoff results, average home attendance, percent of stadium capacity and franchise value. None of which is the club’s forte….

Rachel Batista and Sarah Zaragoza accused of kidnapping 81-year-old woman

One of the women allegedly made Wells drive her to M&I Bank (6333 Long)…

Kings of Leon will return to St. Lou for cheep — um, cheap

You heard about the pigeon debacle that the Kings of Leon suffered in the Lou on July 23: namely, that birds shit all over their show (and in their mouths!). (Our sister paper, The Riverfront Times, is calling it “Pigeon Gate.” Awesome.) The band walked off the stage after the third song and didn’t return. Gross. Would you? Apparently, the Kings feel…

The Kansas City Star hammered Kansas athletics director Lew Perkins in Sunday’s paper for spending more than $150,000 for 22 flights on university-owned and leased airplanes between July 2008 and May 2010. Not that any of this is illegal; it’s just excessive, especially when he’s flying to Wichita, Hutchinson and Columbia. The Star’s review showed Perkins hopped planes to see…
