Tajai of Souls of Mischief digs Aloe Park

Granted, the reason that Tajai Massey (of Hieroglyphics and Souls of Mischief) likes Approach’s Aloe Park might just have a little to do with the fact that Massey (along with Royce Diamond) guests on the album cut “Where U From.” It’s some nice props, and a good story about how Tajai met Approach in this video by Pandorium Media. Jorts-wearing man attacks ATM, doesn’t bother hiding face

Somebody was really unhappy with the ATM at the Mazuma Credit Union (9300 Troost Avenue) on April 13. Kansas City police are looking for the guy in this video; he didn’t bother to hide his face and apparently likes wife beaters and jorts. The ATM suffered $6,000 in damage. If you recognize the guy, call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477….

Pretzel M&Ms are simply genius

Despite an endless array of brand extensions and flavor additions, the candy aisle hasn’t provided a serious new contender for gut-busting, office-sneaking pleasure since the Milky Way Midnight (itself just a reboot of the Milky Way Dark) in 2000. Consider the drought over. Pretzel M&Ms are so good, I thought about building a fan site for the first time ever….

Mayor Mark Funkhouser loses beer bet to St. Louis mayor

Kansas City, we have failed Mayor Mark Funkhouser. Well, not me but some of you guys. Our esteemed mayor bet with St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay that Kansas Citians would return more census forms than the good people of St. Louis. The Funk wagered a case of Kansas City’s best beer (a case of Boulevard is heading east) and barbecue…

Boston Market slides into the slider market

Boston Market’s trio of sliders Last year was supposedly the “Year of the Slider.” But tiny hamburgers are everywhere in 2010 too. In fact, let’s call them petite sandwiches, because some upscale vendors such as Jack Gage American Tavern and the Majestic Restaurant serve non-burger versions —  the Majestic’s is a trio of ground lamb, filet mignon and a salmon BLT….

Andrew WK has been upstaged

This comes from a a 2006 album by the Finnish group Eläkeläiset, entitled Humppasirkus. It’s a Humppa cover of Andrew WK’s “Party Hard.” Humppa is a style of music that’s essentially like a really fast oompah band — sort of like oompah mixed with polka. It sounds surprisingly like most of the Blue Meanies’ discography. It’s friggin’ great. Categories: Music…

Where was I eating? Here!

Were the gherkins the giveaway clue? Who would have thought a simple turkey sandwich could inspire so many responses? Correct responses, mostly. Yes, the answer to this week’s “Where am I Eating?” question is Eddie Delahunt’s Cafe & at 4448 Bell Street. An Irish coffee-flavored shout-out to Karen Geary, Kristin, James and Bill, who guessed correctly. Another Fat City fan e-mailed…

Fucked Up at the Jackpot

Fucked Up at last year’s Pitchfork Festival in Chicago was a sight to behold. Pink Eyes (Damian Abraham) chewed through a barrage of beach balls tossed to the stage, eventually wearing one as hat before stripping to his shorts to expose his beautifully formed potbelly. One of the guitarists jumped into the crowd. People walked away bloody. In summary: Fucked Up…

KCI heralds nonstop service to nondescript Midwestern city

Attention, world travelers! Kansas City International Airport now offers daily nonstop service to another city bisected by Interstate 70. Making the dreams of adventurers come true, a Frontier Airlines jet left KCI on Monday evening bound for Columbus, Ohio. Frontier and KCI officials cut a ribbon at Terminal C before the 99-seat aircraft began accepting passengers. Columbus is not a…

Mayor Mark Funkhouser loves him some red-light cameras

Kansas City’s oversized novelty Mayor Mark Funkhouser is throwing his support behind the red-light cameras. This isn’t going to sit well with frequent camera critics in the Liberty Restoration Project. Funkhouser will once again announce his love for the cameras at a media conference scheduled for 4:30 p.m. today in the mayor’s office at City Hall. “Kansas City’s red light…

Pearl Jam at the Sprint Center

Forgive me, Vedder, for I have sinned. Scott Spychalski It’s been more than a decade since my last idol worship. In my mid-teens, I lived and breathed Eddie Vedder and Pearl Jam, and I had the bootlegs and Monkeywrench Radio recordings to prove it. But somewhere between the Ticketmaster debacle and the occasionally maddening musical shift that accompanied the No…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, May 4

%{}% At the Vietnam Cafe, the food is good and the price is right. Spent grain is no longer an unfortunate byproduct of homebrewing — now it can be used for chocolate muffins. Tuthilltown Spirits in upstate New York — home of the only “commercially available” bourbon made outside of Kentucky — relies on rap music to help along the…

Steve Tulipana on beverages near and far

Empty Glass is a weekly post devoted to furthering the alcoholic rock star image and mythos. That’s right, kids — drinking has no negative side effects and makes you look cool, to boot. Steve Tulipana is a musician who’s traveled the world as part of Season to Risk and the Roman Numerals. He loves music so much, he opened the…

A margarita roundup for Cinco de Mayo

With the bourbon-fueled celebration of the Kentucky Derby behind us, it’s time to start setting our sights on the tequila-est holiday, Cinco de Mayo. The natural drink extension of tequila is the margarita, and depending on the temperature on Wednesday, you can go either frozen or on the rocks. It’s hardest for me to resist citrus-flavored margaritas. A grapefruit margarita…

BTK ‘murderabilia’ still selling strong

%{}% Memorabilia of Dennis Rader, aka BTK, is considered rare. Somewhere out there, right now, someone is contemplating buying dirt from Dennis Rader’s former lawn for $40. In a depressing story, Wichita Eagle writer Hurst Laviana has detailed that scraps of Rader’s life are now going for up to $3,000 on serial killer, “murderabilia,” Web sites. Radar is more commonly known as…
