Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, May 11

%{}% Big praise for the Free State Brewery and a wish that it would move to Kansas City. An embarrassed defense of the Buffalo Cheddar Dip. at T.G.I. Friday’s. Here’s a closer look at a gadget — the Bang Bang egg cooker — that would pop eggs out like bread from a toaster when they’re done. The newest online food…

Coalesce at the Bottleneck

If Coalesce had to pick a place to step up and headline, they couldn’t have asked for a better place than Lawrence. After Converge canceled a couple dates due to transmission troubles, Coalesce headlined in their stead. What luck that one of them happened to be a hometown date. Sadly, the loss of the headliner combined with a torrential downpour…

1,240 pounds of marijuana found in tractor-trailer at Kearney weigh station

The Missouri State Highway Patrol confiscated 1,240 pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer stopped along Interstate 35 at the Kearney weigh station yesterday. That weighs as much as two-and-a-half Andre the Giants. Authorities became suspicious when the semi’s driver, 55-year-old Alfonso R. Perez, gave “inconsistent statements.” Perez, who is from Los Angeles, California, agreed to let them search the truck,…

Future Islands at the Foundation Room, June 2

The last time Future Islands came through was right at a year ago, when they opened for Dan Deacon at the Foundation Room. The “post-wave” band is returning to that venue on Wednesday, June 2, with openers Lower Dens. Lower Dens features Jana Hunter, a Texas singer-songwriter best known for her work on Cocorosie’s Noah’s Ark album. MP3: Future Islands,…

New tracks from Don Giovanni Records

Don Giovanni Records, home to the Ergs, the Measure , and Screaming Females, has two new releases coming out in June. The two releases are Byrds of Paradise’s “Omega Man” single, as well Full of Fancy’s Liquid Nature + The Singles, both of which will be out at the end of next month. Full of Fancy is sweet female-fronted power…

Missouri, Nebraska offered Big Ten membership, WHB 810 reports

%{}% WHB 810 is reporting that Missouri, Nebraska, Notre Dame and Rutgers have been offered invitations to join the Big Ten. 810 cites “multiple sources close to the negotiations.” The station reports that nothing can be finalized until the conference’s presidents meet in Chicago in June. Keith Mann, an assistant athletic director in media relations at Nebraska, referred to the…

Who is that cowboy at the LongHorn bar?

Before Clint Eastwood, there was William S. Hart Fat City reader Vernon Justice from Kansas City, Kansas, wrote in with an interesting question about a cowboy he’d seen in the bar at the LongHorn Steakhouse in Wyandotte County’s Legends complex. Not a real cowboy, but a vintage photograph. “I was intrigued by a picture near the bar. The photograph was…

The 10 largest concerts in history

In addition to some pretty atrocious writing (then again, like I’m one to talk), this list of the 10 biggest concerts in history is missing quite a few shows. Case in point: while mentioning the 1994 Rod Stewart show on Brazil’s Copacabana Beach, the 2006 Rolling Stones concert in the same place is ignored, and that show drew over 1…

The perfect bar food menu

Bar food used to be like ballpark food — simple and salty. Both were designed to keep you drinking beer as long as you were in your seat. While salt has not yet been outlawed, “simple” has gone out the window. Today, bar food can be complex and as important as the cocktails being served. So when The Guardian recently…

Stream tracks from the new Belles album

In addition to the tracks already posted on the Belles’ MySpace page (Time Flies When You’re Losing Your Mind’s title track, “The Late Hours,” “Existence Is Fraglie,” and “Scars”), you can use the embedded player below to stream another track from the band’s forthcoming second album on S-Curve Records. The track is called “Standing Demons,” and fits right in with…

Erykah Badu at the Midland: Canceled

As if the slew of reschedules and cancellations this dreary Monday morning weren’t enough yet: According to a press release, Erykah Badu (and her Kansas City, Kansas native opener, Janelle Monae) have pulled out of their date at the Midland on June 8 after revising the dates of Badu’s Out My Mind, Just In Time tour. Instead, the tour now…

Where’s this summer special?

This dish is part of a national restaurant chain’s selection of summer specials, and it’s a pretty good deal: For less than nine bucks, you get a loaded baked spud (or some other side dish) and a grilled chicken breast topped with fresh orange slices and a tarty orange sauce. Bread and butter too. Which restaurant is serving this dish?…

Converge Dropping Off Lawrence Lineup

Tonight’s metal extravaganza just lost some of its pummeling power. Headliners Converge stumbled upon some transmission troubles with their van in Cleveland, and they won’t be able to make it to the show at the Bottleneck tonight. Here’s what the band has to say about it: Hey everyone – What a tour… First thing: We lost Lewd Acts due to some…

Talib Kweli at the Midland: Postponed

Tonight’s show at the Midland with Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek has been officially moved to June 17. The Midland assures fans that all previously purchased tickets will be honored at that location, at the newly scheduled date.  We can’t find any reason for the postponement online. In the meantime, since you’ve already waited ten years to hear Revolutions Per Minute live (the…

Murs at the Jackpot

Everything I need to know about love, I learned while watching Murs perform at the Jackpot last night. The rapper dropped heartfelt gems such as, “Never let your dick pick who you fall in love with.” (For the ladies, he had: “Use it, don’t abuse it.”) Moments between songs felt as though the packed audience were, collectively, his best friend….

Starbucks’ Frappuccino happy hour this week

The mid-afternoon milkshake has some competition this week with Starbucks happy hour. The promotion — half-price frappuccinos from 3 to 5 p.m. — lasts until Sunday, May 16. There are a number of locations in the Kansas City area, which you can find via the Web site or courtesy of a free iPhone application. Starbucks is promoting its new customization…

Chelsea Handler at Starlight Theater

I never thought a Mazda Miata would bring me closer to Chelsea Handler, but that’s precisely what happened Friday night at the Starlight Theater. I recently encountered the impossible task of explaining the enigma surrounding the Mazda Miata to a close associate. She wanted to know why Miatas were always mentioned in conjunction with the pathetic, or with deep irony….

Nashville flood proves to rightbloggers: Obama hates America, white people

%{}% Even if you don’t know much about rightbloggers, you probably know that since time immemorial conservatives have blamed the nation’s problems and Democratic Administrations on something called the Liberal Media. This nefarious press syndicate (of which the Village Voice is considered a charter member) has since WWII managed to elect six Democratic U.S. Presidents, drive Richard Nixon from office,…

Breakfast Buffet: Monday, May 10

%{}% One diner’s disappointed in the fried chicken at RC’s Restaurant & Lounge. Does a pork-licious Italian soda flavor go too far? A new bourbon convert explains what helped lure her to the amber side. Your Mickey Mouse pancake just won’t cut it — especially when you’re competing with dads who design bumble bees, giraffes and a suspension bridge. Categories:…

Gil Mantera’s Party Dream at the Riot Room

After watching Gil Mantera’s Party Dream load their equipment on stage and stutter through their soundcheck at The Riot Room Friday night, I didn’t expect them to vault back on the stage decked out in skintight leopard print leotards and sunglasses mere minutes later.  It was odd due to the way Ultimate Donny (Richard Elmsworth) and Gil Mantera (Glen Whiteweather)…
