K2 is outlawed, but new weed alternatives are already hitting stores

You can smoke this in public and the Man will just have to sit there groovin’ on it. Lawmakers and cops argue that making K2 synthetic weed a Schedule I controlled substance willl keep the good, God-fearing citizens of Kansas safe. Less than 48 hours after Gov. Mark Parkinson signed the ban, store owners are showing the futility of lawmakers’ posturing….

Incoming: Pearl Jam

In keeping with the bombardment of ’90s nostalgia that Kansas City has been battered with lately (Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, etc.), now you’ve got yet another reason to resurrect your grunge records, unwashed hair and plaid-n-workboots ensemble this summer: Pearl Jam is hitting the Sprint Center on Monday, May 3. Pearl Jam is touring in support of their…

Rock of Pages: Devolution magazine

As with Bubblegum Slut, a publication we reviewed last month, Devolution is a UK magazine devoted to a subculture with which I’m not all that familiar. However, while Bubblegum Slut is a photocopied and stapled affair devoted to sleaze rock, with which I’m slightly familiar, Devolution is a slick and glossy magazine devoted to goth, industrial, and punk. Now, when…

Things we hate: American cheese

The all-American processed favorite! What does it say about America that the nation’s favorite cheese — its namesake cheese — has no earthy, sexy aroma, offers very little flavor and has the texture of malleable plastic? More than half of all cheese consumed in the United States is processed American cheese — not something you’ll ever find in any “artisanal”…

Blake Bowman’s mother disputes police account of son’s death

Kansas City police say Blake Bowman was shot and killed by a police sniper while allegedly holding his mother hostage at knife-point on February 18. But Bowman’s mother, Marsha Sauber, told the Kansas City Call a different story. Sauber told the reporter Eric L. Wesson that her son had dropped the knife and agreed to surrender to police. Sauber said…

Play with your food: The Reuben sandwich kit

A deli in a kit! Sometimes food manufacturers take their inspiration from the toy industry and create products that combine culinary ideas with playtime. In the 1960s there was “Shake-A-Puddin’” (“Milk and powder go in the cup, snap on the lid and then you shake it up!”) and Space Food Stick, which had the consistency of Play-Doh and could be…

Big 12 fans are apparently like locusts to shrimp

This sign by the register at Cosentino’s market downtown suggests that those looking to nail down shrimp will be disappointed this Friday. As to whether this is a comment on how busy they expect to be or the average potential shrimp intake of Big 12 fans, I’ll leave to you discerning readers. And though you won’t be able to get…

Win tickets to the Original Wailers at the Voodoo Lounge, March 26

As a band name, “Wailers” gets a bit confusing. There’s the Wailers from the Northwest United States back in the ’60s, known for their songs “Tall Cool One” and “Out of Our Tree.” Then there’s the Wailers, which was the band that Bob Marley formed with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, which now tours featuring Bunny Wailer. From there, you…

A little piece of the California Taqueria came back to life with the opening of Taqueria Bautista (4116 Broadway) in Westport yesterday. “Those who remember the California Taqueria will be happy because we’re using many of the same recipes,” says owner Juan Bautista.  His mother, Carmen, is the connection, having brought back many of the recipes from her time at…

Breakfast Buffet: Thursday, March 11

%{}% In honor of Easter, a comparison of all the versions of Reese’s peanut butter candy. BRGR draws the inevitable comparison to Blanc, but will likely be very successful in Prairie Village. The human body as a subway map — you hope it runs on time. Waste half an hour designing your own Chiquita Banana sticker and competing in a…

Denny Hardin is a model prisoner, except for all of those lawsuits

Denny Hardin’s going to sue his way right out of jail. Just you watch! Whenever I needed to call the Moberly Correctional Center about Denny Hardin, head of the Americans Republic Party, whoever I talked to would always say somewhere near the end of the conversation, “He’s an interesting guy, isn’t he?” The subject of this week’s print feature, “Don’t…

Incoming: Deadbolt at the Gaslight Tavern, May 23

At the Dead to Me show on Monday night, someone informed me that the scariest band in the world, Deadbolt, would be playing the Gaslight Tavern in April. They were a month off, but the fact still remains: Deadbolt returns to Lawrence on Sunday, May 23. It’s been at nearly seven years since the group last played in the area….

Carva White, candyman preacher, gets 12 years for arson scheme

Itinerant preacher Carva White entered the courtroom with a cane in his hand and his ankles in bracelets, equipment that indicated both his frailty and taste for crime. White, 46, was working as the music director at a church in Leavenworth when he devised an arson scheme. He set fire to Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church on Halloween in 2008. White…

Robert Peterson: Coming to a median near you

Robert Peterson, a candidate for the Kansas City, Missouri, School Board, doesn’t have a flashy Web site. It’s a bare-bones template with basic information; the kind of thing a high school student could whip up in a few minutes during study hall. But his online presence does point to one possible advantage: Peterson has some wealthy backers, including influential businessmen…
