Christina M. Anderson identified as woman found dead in Lee’s Summit

Christina M. Anderson has been identified as the woman found dead in the 3900 block of Southwest Ensign Drive Monday morning. But it’s still uncertain how Anderson died. KSHB Channel 41 reports that autopsy results were “inconclusive.” Anderson was 41 years old, not 43 as was originally reported. View Larger Map Lee’s Summit police had referred to Anderson’s death as…

Clay Hughes, “Sunday Stroll”

After our review of Clay Hughes’s Burn album yesterday, we got an e-mail from the man himself. He tipped us off to the fact that he’s got a video for “Sunday Stroll” up on Youtube. It’s directed by Jonathan Dillon, who directed the indie film Fight Night. It’s the slickest, most professional video I’ve yet to see come out of…

Who’s backing the school board candidates? The endorsements

Whether apathetic, uninformed or just plain fed up, few residents typically cast a ballot in elections for the Kansas City, Missouri, School Board (see this week’s feature, “Board Brawl”). Bitch and moan about our failing schools? Sure. Bother to attend a candidate forum? Uh, no thanks. But a crowded field of at-large candidates and a battle in Subdistrict Four (not…

Leatherface, “God Is Dead”

Leatherface’s new album, The Stormy Petrel, came out last week on No Idea. It’s the English punk act’s first album in over five years, and it’s goddamn brilliant. Honestly, I’ve always been a bigger fan of bands that sound like Leatherface than Leatherface themselves, but this album is a top-to-bottom instant classic. Leatherface frontman Frankie Stubbs’ gruff vocals are mellowed…

Traveling Cocktail Club stops at BRGR tonight

Mixologists Ryan Maybee and Beau Williams are behind the bar from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. making Manifesto classics, BRGR signature drinks and whatever you feel like drinking. This is what it must be like to follow a band — if that band made delicious cocktails….

You’ve been warned, Raytown: Prozac’s for losers

This heartfelt sign issues a warning to motorists who use Raytown Trafficway. It may be the work of Scientologists. The enterprise’s founder, sci-fi hack L. Ron Hubbard, believed that psychiatry was tantamount to terrorism. At any rate, the sign provides a cautionary tale that paint, lipstick and other improvisatorial writing instruments to do not come with spell-check. Categories: News Tags:…

Relic Tray: The New Unity Inn Cookbook

The oldest vegetarian restaurant in Kansas City would now be 104 years old — if it was still all-vegetarian. Operated by the Unity Temple, the Unity Inn was in occupied an old frame house at 913 Tracy in downtown Kansas City. The vegetarian dining room was so successful that by 1920, the vegetarian founders of Unity, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore,…

Download No Friends’ Traditional Failures EP

The new EP from No Friends, the hardcore group fronted by Municipal Waste’s Tony Foresta is called Traditional Failures. As fantastic as last year’s debut on No Idea was, this is even better. It’s not even nine minutes long, and it’s a breath of fresh air. No thrash, no tough guy, no emo, no screamo — this is just good,…

K2 caveat emptor: Know your dealer

While we wait for Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to sign a ban on K2 synthetic marijuana, some of you might be stockpiling the faux reefer. At least that’s what’s been hinted at by various commenters on this site. And I’ve seen brisk sales at metro stores still carrying the stuff. Now, I’m not going to name any names, and I’m certainly…

Buy this restaurant: Melbee’s

It’s been 20 months since Lloyd Boothe closed the doors to his upscale bistro in downtown Mission. Melbee’s was a  sophisticated piano bar and dining room where patrons could, and did, sip martinis and sing along to Cole Porter tunes. If you peer in through the windows today, you can see that the tables are still cloaked in white and…

Empty Glass: Adam Lee

Empty Glass is a weekly post devoted to furthering the alcoholic rock star image and mythos. That’s right, kids — drinking has no negative side effects and makes you look cool, to boot. Adam Lee, of the eponymous Adam Lee & the Dead Horse Sound Company, answers the question, “What’s your favorite drink, and where do you like to drink…

Xiu Xiu at the Jackpot

Trying to convince someone to go to a Xiu Xiu show with you is almost futile.  ”Is it going to be fucked up?” one friend asked. “Maybe,” I said. “Is someone going to vomit on me?” asked another, referencing the video for the title track from Xiu Xiu’s latest LP, Dear God I Hate Myself, which features keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist Angela Seo…

Tomatoes by request at Wendy’s

If you’ve received a burger at Wendy’s that only has lettuce, it’s not a mistake. You’ll have to ask for tomatoes when you go through the drive-thru because tomatoes, when they’re available, are “by request only.” A January tomato freeze in Florida is having an effect on fast-food chains across the nation. More than 80 percent of the state’s tomato…

And with the bus for his new reality television competition, America’s Next Great Restaurant, in town for a casting call from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Chipotle (6864 Johnson Drive in Mission), Kansas Citians want to let Chef Flay know…

Anthony Hurley accused of burning a cross in front of home

Speaking of racist bullshit. An 18-year-old Excelsior Springs man named Anthony Hurley is accused of burning a cross in front of a home north of Cameron early Saturday morning. Hurley likely wasn’t recreating Madonna’s Like a Prayer video. The St. Joseph News-Press says Hurley is accused of “harassment motivated by discrimination, trespass motivated by discrimination, stealing less than $500 in…

Breakfast Buffet: Tuesday, March 30

%{}% It’s hard to not want to try something that someone says is the best they’ve ever made, like this recipe for chocolate chip cookies. A guide to making green gumbo — what may be the healthiest gumbo in existence. Burger King has a clever new series of advertisements to promote franchises being open late. A compendium of candy making,…

Former KCPD officer Danny Holmes’ discrimination suit in court today

We’re expecting a low- to medium-grade fuss at the Jackson County Courthouse today as a trial begins that pits a former Kansas City Police Department patrol officer against his former employers and the Kansas City, Missouri, Board of Police Commissioners. For background, read our 2007 story, “The Cop Who Killed a Murder Case,” and the follow-up, “Murder Case is Killed…
