Cheap eats: Bristol has lobsters at cost today

With this city’s appetite for seafood, lobsters don’t last very long in Kansas City. That theory gets put to the test tonight with the Bristol Seafood Grill’s fresh lobster special. The downtown seafood restaurant will sell you a live, one-pound, Maine lobster at cost between 4 and 7 p.m. if you sit at the bar. That’s convenient because it also…

What’s in season: Rutabagas

Winter is about root vegetables and one of the hidden gems is rutabagas. The cross between a cabbage and turnip — also known as a Swedish turnip — it’s slightly sweeter than a turnip with less water (which means it can sometimes be woody if not cooked properly). The flesh is yellowy-orange, so it can add nice color to an…

Ex-Missouri political power broker Rod Jetton pleads not guilty

Rod Jetton didn’t appear in court today but his defense attorney reportedly entered a not guilty plea for him to second-degree felony assault charges in connection with choking and punching a woman during a night of sex. Jetton will also get a new judge to hear the case. There’s at least three versions of what Jetton, the former Missouri Speaker…

Malcolm Garcia’s foreign reporting cited by Dave Eggers

Intrepid, Kansas City-based journalist J. Malcolm Garcia got a name check in an Onion A.V. Club interview with writer and publisher Dave Eggers. Garica, the author of a recent feature story in The Pitch, contributed to Panorama, the print-journalism extravaganza that hit the streets of San Francisco last month. The 320-page broadsheet represents Eggers’ belief in and hope for newspapers….

Tipping on to go orders

Are you supposed to tip when you pick up carry-out? For some people, a tip might be hard to justify. The order isn’t being brought to your table or delivered to your door, and the hostess or bartender who presents you with your order might only be involved in the sales portion of the transaction. In addition, you can certainly…

Darryl Burton’s Christmas was better than yours

Have a happy holiday? That’s cool. Darryl Burton did, too. He got to spend Christmas with his daughter for the first time in 24 years. The last time Burton saw his daughter, Tynesha Lee, she was 2 years old. Their relationship was put on a 24-year pause after Burton was sent to prison for a St. Louis murder he didn’t…

MP3: Blockhead, “Which One Of You Jerks Drank My Arnold Palmer?”

What the hell does it mean when something is “instrumental hip hop”? Most of the music described as such falls somewhere in this weird void. It’s not quite funk, not quite electronica, and not really dance music. Still, it’s more full than the name would suggest. Most instrumental hip hop would fit nicely as a backing track, but is strong…

Download the Knux’s The Fuck You EP

While we sit around and await the follow-up to the Knux’s Remind Me In 3 Days…, they’ve been kind enough to grace us with The Fuck You EP. The five-song EP doesn’t necessarily contain anything approaching the infectious ass-shaking groove that made “Cappuccino” such a hit, but we can hope that their new full-length (on which they are working) is…

Good luck, Dave Catanese and Jason Rosenbaum

The ranks of Missouri political reporters are getting thinner. First, Springfield’s KY3 News loses Dave Catanese to Politico, and now excellent reporter and blogger (The Pitch’s pick as Best Blogger of 2009) Jason Rosenbaum says he won’t be covering the Missouri Legislature on a regular basis because he’s taking a job as web editor for Missouri Lawyers Media in St….

Video: Islands, “No You Don’t” Starring Michael Cera

Youth in Revolt, indeed. Charmingly awkward indie poster boy Michael Cera is taking a walk on the wild side – on screen, at least. Starring in the a new music video from synth-loving Montreal band Islands, the Superbad star appears in rare psychedelic form when Cera pops some unidentified pills and essentially trips balls the entire video.  Here’s some electro eye…

Video: Mean Jeans, “Live at Burgerville”

Here are a couple videos of Dirtnap Records garage punks Mean Jeans live at one of Portland’s Burgerville locations. Evidently Burgerville is somewhere Mean Jeans has been playing fairly regularly, according to the bands’ MySpace. Now, it’s nowhere near as crazy as the infamous In Defence Taco Johns video, but they’re still pretty entertaining. Categories: Music Tags: Burgerville, Dirtnap Records,…

Heat up with grog

Once the solitary domain of pirates and sailors, grog is thankfully open to the rest of us law-abiding, land-loving folk. And in the interest of discovering additional uses for a new Christmas Crock-Pot, I’ve been looking for a warming drink — particularly in light of Friday’s expected temperature of -15. That kind of weather calls for the home bar to…
