Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, December 9

%{}% A health-and-wellness blogger visits Lawrence’s Local Burger and thinks about organic sides. Here’s a review of the new cookbook Cooking the Cowboy Way, and the recipe for Jack Stack’s hickory pit beans. And here’s a primer on how to clean, cut and roast beets for use in salads or dishes. Salad on a stick would seem to subscribe to…

Police to harsh holiday buzz

Update (Dec. 9, 9:45 a.m.): Stepped up enforcement means both increased police presence on the road and a checkpoint, according to Sgt. Ron Podraza, supervisor of the DUI section. So you had a few cups of ‘nog, perhaps a hot toddy or two, then you hop in your car and drive it home, right? One eye closed, with your thumbs…

Throwback MP3 of the Week: Nasa’s Little Secret, “Seventeen”

The one and I only time I ever saw Nasa’s Little Secret, I didn’t actually see them. In all truth, I listened to about three or four songs they played while standing outside a packed coffee shop called the Tin Man in Tonganoxie. It was the summer before my senior year of high school, and the Tin Man was the…

Wayward Advent Calendar: The Island of Misfit Toys

Keeping with the Rankin-Bass theme set with yesterday’s post, here’s the Island of Misfit Toys sequence from the stop-motion duo’s most famous release, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. It’s 35 years old this year, and first aired on NBC on December 6, 1964. The New York Times did a stellar story a few years back on the rediscovery and restoration of…

Tim Brewster the next Kansas football coach?

I’ll be in Tempe, Arizona, to watch Iowa State play Minnesota in the Insight Bowl, but Tim Brewster might not be patrolling the Gophers’ sideline. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported Tuesday that Brewster’s name is being talked about as the next football coach at Kansas, and Minnesota’s athletic director made no guarantees that Brewster would be back for a…

‘Funeral motorcade’ for Shawnee Mission Park deer this afternoon

The deer death toll has already surpassed 300, but the activists in Bite Club of KC aren’t about to give up their campaign to save the fuzzy mammals in Shawnee Mission Park. Today, though, their tone is taking a turn — from road-blocking, blood-spattering, deer-head-hoisting outrage to a somber death march. According to earlier reports from the Johnson County Park…

Buy a ticket to Sunday’s Chiefs game, or else

If the 3-9 Chiefs’ pretty miserable ranking in the AFC West basement wasn’t enough, now the league is threatening to black out local television broadcast of Sunday’s game against 4-8 Buffalo unless 3,500 more people buy tickets. It’d be the first time since 1990 that a Chiefs game would be blacked out in Kansas City. That means the team is…

Raytown police say Wesley Bryan Binder was the man found dead in his driveway in the 8900 block of 60th Terrace in Raytown Monday morning. Binder was 51. Raytown police say the crime scene is still being processed. Binder’s body was found around 8 a.m. Monday. Officers said Binder had suffered blunt force head trauma. If you know anything about…

Now we know why Bruce Springsteen’s show was canceled …

The autopsy results are in and Leonard Sullivan, Bruce Springsteen’s 34-year-old cousin, died from acute amphetamine and heroin intoxication. KCTV 5 reports that it was accidental intoxication. Sullivan was found dead in the InterContinental Hotel hours before Springsteen’s October 25 concert in Kansas City, which Springsteen canceled. Sullivan was the E Street Band’s assistant road manager for the past 10…

St. James Winery scores Jefferson Cup win

You can’t beat the classics — at least that was the message at the Jefferson Cup Invitational Wine Competition, where one of the first wines produced by St. James Winery was a winner. The international wine competition, held annually in Kansas City, is in its 10th year. This year, 78 wines were selected as Jefferson Cup nominees out of more…

Video: Grindcore baby

This could be the greatest video on the web — this week, at least. A baby sings along to Napalm Death. Stupendous in its amazing-ness. The only way this could be better is if I could mash it up with my kid rocking out to Dethklok. They’re remarkably similar. Anyone know what song that is? Categories: Music Tags: babies, Dethklok,…

MP3: Lowell Brams feat. Sufjan Stevens, “Alpha to Theta”

Asthmatic Kitty released volumes 4-6 of its Library Catalog Music this week. The label describes the project as follows: Asthmatic Kitty’s Library Catalog Music is a series of instrumental albums designed for possible use in films and television, background sounds for home or office, or personal needs, such as relaxation, stimulation, meditation, concentration, or elevation. For your listening pleasure, we…

90 is so the new 100-calorie

Coca-Cola has unveiled its new mini, 90-calorie can at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and sadly, like all shows that appear in the Big Apple, Kansas City won’t be seeing this one until 2010. The cans debut in Los Angeles and New York this month and nationwide by April. The mini is only a half-ounce smaller than…

McClatchy announces it’ll end wage freeze. Things looking up for The Star?

The Kansas City Star’s parent company McClatchy has announced it will lift a company-wide wage freeze starting this January, according to the Charlotte Business Journal. That’s good news for the men and women working at 18th and Grand. The company instituted a wage freeze in September 2008. According to a memo released by Chief Executive Gary Pruitt, pay raises will…

Brussels sprouts: Love them or hate them?

Brussels sprout might be the most polarizing vegetable in the crisper. Some people associate the green golf balls with childhood edicts attached to the cleaning of plates, while others have discovered an earthy fall vegetable that’s hearty and delicious. Sit. Stay. Good Blog. falls in the latter camp, with a post that discusses why this blogger is in love with…

Now Open for lunch: Julian

James Beard Award-winning chef Celina Tio’s new Brookside bistro, Julian, began serving lunch last week. The menu changes frequently, sometimes daily, although Tio makes sure it includes favorites from the dinner menu — including the macaroni-and-cheese in a Boulevard Pale Ale cheese sauce and the braised short rib. Prices are $9 for one course, $12 for two courses and $14 for…

Nutt a bust. Houston Nutt doesn’t want to coach Kansas

Kansas athletic director Lew Perkins best look elsewhere for his next head football coach. Houston Nutt has reportedly said he “appreciates the interest Kansas showed in our staff” but he’s staying put at Ole Miss. Here’s Nutt’s full statement: “I continue to appreciate the ongoing support of Chancellor Dan Jones and Athletics Director Pete Boone. We came to Ole Miss…

Found in a book

One of my recent checkouts from the library was the excellent comic collection I Saw You, which is an anthology of comics based on Craigslist “Missed Connection” ads. Edited by Julia Wertz, it’s one of those little books you breeze right through, and by the time it’s done, you want more. On the bright side, this is exactly the sort…

Slideshow: Backfire BBQ Opening at the Legends

Last night, Steven Schussler opened Backfire BBQ, his second Legends restaurant. Much like his other venture, T-Rex Cafe, the biker-themed, Orange County Choppers branded joint is a visually stimulating tourist draw. In fact, Kansas City, Kansas, Mayor Joe Reardon was on hand to proclaim December 7th “Backfire Barbecue Day.” The Pitch’s Berry Anderson captured the opening in this slideshow. Categories:…

Movie screening raises cash to help soldiers keep the lights on

Over the past few weeks, Shelby Diltz canvassed dreary parking lots and left stacks of fliers everywhere she could think of, trying to drum up attendance for a one-night screening of Brothers at War. Produced by actor Gary Sinise, the movie follows Jake Rademacher, a filmmaker who travels to Iraq to better understand the life and work of his two…

The life and death of a young waiter

Anthony Spino III, who with his brother Vito runs the family’s Anthony’s Restaurant and Lounge at 701 Grand, does not want Nelson Hopkins Jr. to be remembered as just another murder statistic. Last week, the 17-year-old Hopkins was robbed and gunned down a block from his home at 54th and Troost after taking a bus from the Plaza Library. Hopkins —…
