A truly stinky Thanksgiving with sauerkraut

The beauty of Thanksgiving traditions is that they have to start somewhere, as The Washington Post discovered when it recently set out to discover the unlikely inclusion of sauerkraut as part of the Thanksgiving spread in many Baltimore, Maryland, households. Although Baltimore can thank German emigrants for the popularity of sauerkraut this time of year — in Germany, it was…

Weird Al Podcasts, Widgets, and More

Accordian-wielding parodist “Weirdl Al” Yankovic released the two-disc The Essential “Weird Al” Yankovic last month. If you own all of Yankovic’s albums, then there’s nothing new for you here. However, if you want all the hits, this is the best way to get them. As part of the promotion for the album’s release, Legacy Recordings has produced a four-part podcast:…

Waterboy Watch, week 9: Funk’s Footballers lose

Mayor Mark Funkhouser didn’t do shit with his fantasy football team this week, and he got his ass handed to him by The Commish, 74-45. Funk played Philadelphia running back Brain Westbrook — who hasn’t played a game since October 26 when he suffered a concussion. Why the fuck he’s in Funk’s lineup is beyond me. Also in Funk’s lineup,…

Leftovers: Breadsticks, menus, and hirings

Here are some random newsy items from my reporter’s notebook. Farm to Market Launches Line of Breadsticks  The Farm to Market Bread Company recently introduced a new line of Grissini Torinesi — traditional Italian-style breadsticks. The grissini will be made by Claudio Cantore, a third-generation baker who emigrated to the United States from Italy in 1974 and served as an…

MP3: Stik Figa & D/Will, “Knowwhere”

Via 2dopeboyz, this is the second leaked track off Stik Figa and D/Will’s upcoming release, hellogoodbye, which will arrive December 1. Contrasting the first leaked track, the restless, banging “Seasons,” “Knowwhere” is more laidback and funky, an easy ride over a popping bass-guitar and laden with crackly vinyl static. Still with the catchy chorus, though. MP3: Stik Figa & D/Will:…

White Owl still caged by the man

White Owl is still locked up in the Douglas County clink. The man cracked down on the 62-year-old, unofficial third-string mascot of the Kansas Jayhawks, whose real name is Jimmy Neil Tucker, after he amassed an impressive rap sheet in the last couple of years — including allegedly stealing books from KU’s library. White Owl ended up locked up in…

An open letter to ketchup lickers

To the Gentleman who chose to lick his ketchup packet (and all of his kindred spirits), I guess in your mind, it was only natural to lick and suck at the tear in the ketchup packet — your cavernous mouth was already open and it was your teeth that made the initial tear. It certainly seemed like something you had…

Tony Gonzalez gets naked for PETA

Former Kansas City Chief Tony Gonzalez is no furry. The Atlanta Falcons tight end is swearing off fur coats and stripping down for PETA as part of the “Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” campaign, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Tony G. told the AJC that he’s buff because he’s a vegan. He added: “We should be protecting animals, not…

Kansas City police released the names of victims of yesterday’s industrial accident at the construction site of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Police say 35-year-old Ryan Goodman of Lee’s Summit died after the cherry-picker lift he was in tipped over. Goodman was reportedly 50 feet in the air. Police say 30-year-old Shane Wagener of Grain Valley is in…

What your waiter is Tweeting about you

In just a few months we’ve gone from a server being fired for what she wrote on a blog to a server being fired for a Tweet about a customer. Keep your eyes peeled for the waiter that is terminated following a Facebook status update or for participating in a Reddit thread about the parent company of their restaurant. Meanwhile,…

Larry Johnson is still homeless

No one claimed Larry Johnson from waivers yesterday, which means the Chiefs are on the hook for the remaining $2.1 million of this year’s salary. Plus, LJ can now sign wherever he wants  — if they’ll take him. And in the biggest bit of bullshit you’ll read today, Johnson told Sports Illustrated’s Dan Patrick that he’d like to finish his…

Concert Review: Why? at the Jackpot

BY IAN HRABE A year ago, on a whim, I saw Why? play the Jackpot. I never see bands on a whim. In those days, I had to have some sort of investment to fork over ten bucks to see a band, but having nothing else to do, I ended up watching Yoni Wolf put on one of the best…

Breakfast Buffet: Wednesday, November 11

%{}% A guide to homemade jalapeno poppers, and most importantly, some advice on what not to do. Upcoming seasonal beers from Sierra Nevada, and which ones constitute a proper session beer. It’s a big day for those of you who take cooking advice from former figure skaters. What Would Brian Boitano Make? is coming back for a second season on…

Chiefs parody 30 Rock

Maybe I’m still getting a contact high from the K2, but I really like the Chiefs’ 30 Rock knockoff, 1 Arrowhead. Good job out of cheerleader Kerri and announcer Mitch Holthus in the Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) and Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin) roles. Not sure who KC Wolf is supposed to be … Tracy Morgan?  This follows a pretty damn…

Ripple Glass: The 10-day report

At the launch party for Ripple Glass last week, the company’s CEO, Stacia Stelk, was already reveling in the up-start company’s success. Outside, next to one of the giant, purple recycling bins, Stelk and Andy Barton, vice president of sales for Deffenbaugh Industries, spoke excitedly. Earlier in the week, the two had watched as one of the first collection bins…

Urban agriculture steering committee begins work

Jonathan Bender wrote this post on Fat City earlier today. A steering committee organized to identify the key issues around urban agriculture in the Kansas City, Missouri, metro area — the result of an public forum on October 22 — met for the first time on Monday night at the Nutter Ivanhoe Neighborhood Center in midtown. “We want to revise…

Flier of the Week: The Rumblejetts’ Summertime Apples Release Party

The Rumblejetts have provided the Kansas City area with high-quality, high-octane rockabilly for over a decade now, and the group shows no signs of stopping. Their live shows are a guaranteed good time, with a mix of classic Sun Records covers, as well as the group’s originals, which blend into the set so well as to be indistinguishable from songs…
