This week’s “Best of Fat City”

A rainbow of culinary creativity in one week! Remember Rainbow Brite? No, not Strawberry Shortcake, that other quasi-cartoon TV character and toy marketing device from the 1980s. Rainbow Brite was full of colorful rainbows and happiness — just like this week’s Top Stories in Fat City!  Well, it was colorful, anyway, beginning with white, as in White Castle — one…

Comment of the Week

You draw a Florida to look like a big cock — and say “Florida got excited” — in a classroom, then you won’t be teaching for long. Ryan Haraughty found out the hard way this week. I mentioned Haraughty’s poor artistic skills — and the outcry from Haraughty’s students over his firing — in this post, “Teacher fired for drawing…

Friday Book Review: Robert Altman: The Oral Biography by Mitchell Zuckoff

In Mitchell Zuckoff’s Robert Altman: The Oral Biography (Alfred A. Knopf, 560 pages, $29.95), Altman tells the author that his motto is “Giggle and give in.” But this thick, frustrating book — rich in anecdotes and grudges, richer in defenses of its subject, but only intermittently revealing of Altman’s technical mastery — offers little evidence that the iconoclastic director, who…

This week’s Pitch and 13 things we learned this week

There’s a new push for glass-recycling in Kansas City thanks to Ripple Glass. Carolyn Szczepanski writes all about the new venture in this week’s feature story, “The Ripple Effect.” The goal is pretty lofty: Triple Kansas City’s glass-recycling efforts in the next two years. Let’s hope they do it. Also in this week’s Pitch, Martin tries to make sense of…

Scene Snapshot: Franki Chan of IHEARTCOMIX @ Czar Bar

Since May, the free Scion Radio 17 Monthly series has brought heaps of beats to the Czar Bar, much of it executed by DJs who probably wouldn’t have come through KC at all — certainly not to play shows that cost you nothing other than an e-mail address to get into. Last night was the season’s final installment and featured…

Death Cab For Cutie’s Chris Walla Talks Finance

Because we like to keep ourselves informed, we at Wayward Blog like to keep our ear tuned to the radio. You can’t rock all the time, and Anti-Flag songs are ten times funnier when you’re actually aware of the political situation in which the world finds itself. Plus, being as how journalism is a fantastic way to make mad scrilla,…

Talkin’ 1937 and KC labor history with Bill Clause

Ask Bill Clause, of good-hearted nonprofits KKFI 90.1 and CrossCurrents Culture, how he came to write 1937: A Helluva Year, a musical steeped in the history of Kansas City and the labor movement, and he can’t help but start time-lining. “When you look back at history, there are certain watershed years,” he explained to The Pitch this week. Then, like…

Battle of the nut brown ales

Winter is upon us and in case you have a fireplace that isn’t working, you should have a good brown ale to keep you warm. Today’s battle is a slugfest between a domestic craft brewer, Goose Island of Chicago, and an English import, Samuel Smith. Both breweries are well-regarded and offer Nut Brown Ales. So, in a side-by-side pour, Fat…
