Flier of the Week: Death Becomes Hair

Headmasters Salon, at 809 Vermont in Lawrence, hosts Death Becomes Hair, a benefit for Harvesters, on October 29. As you can see, it’s a Halloween-themed event. Now, I like to plug benefits as often as possible on this blog, because they’re for a good cause, and they usually have some sort of clever thing — in this case, the name….

Get past the name and go see Wonkachild tonight at the Record Bar

When I told a colleague here at The Pitch that I was excited about an artist named Wonkachild, he said, “What, is he a candy raver or something?” Yeah, 23-year-old Jaqwan Sirls picked a stupid-ass name on which to hang a music career. But even if he went by Fetusmuncher, I’d be encouraging attendance at his show tonight at the…

Killa City: KCMO homicide No. 91, Lorne Mabon

Kansas City police say Lorne Mabon was the man fatally shot near 29th and Indiana yesterday afternoon. Mabon, 19, was found shot on a sidewalk near the intersection around 2:23 p.m. Mabon later died at a local hospital. Witnesses told police that a black male fled the scene on foot right after the shooting. No suspects are in custody. If…

Halloween cocktails: Your spirits guide

Whether you believe in ghosts or not, Halloween-inspired cocktails might just be the thing to lift your spirits. The place to start — and perhaps end — is cocktails made with candy-corn infused vodka. It would appear to have a light orange hue like that of orange drink, and what I can only imagine to be an unparalleled sweetness. But…

Sebelius taking health insurance reform questions at 2:45 p.m.

Health and Human Services Secretary and former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will be taking questions about health insurance reform at 2:45 p.m. today (although they seem to be running late). Feel free to chat her and Sen. Patty Murray of Washington state up. Watch live here — or follow the stream after the jump — and toss ’em questions on…

Vegetarian spider still scary

It may not eat meat, but that doesn’t make the vegetarian spider any less intimidating. The journal Current Biology has published news of the discovery that the Bagheera kiplingi spider has a diet that consists primarily of acacia plants, making it the first of 40,000 known spider species that is believed to be an herbivore. “This is the only spider…

Antennas Up Tap Taps into your iPhone.

Since music consumers these days spend more time fingering their iPhones than their wallets at the merch table at actual live shows, it’s pretty dang smart for a touring regional band like our own Antennas Up to get its music on the all-powerful gadget of the day. And as of last week, iPhone and iPod touch users who download the…

Bon Voyage, Captain Lou

Argh. WWE — back when it was the WWF — was once home to men who strutted around with parrots, tortured folks with snakes, and a man who wore rubber bands in his facial hair. That last man was Captain Lou Albano, and it was thanks to his involvement with one Cyndi Lauper that wrestling became less of a white…

A new pie shop in Parkville

You’ll be pie-eyed by the selection at Parkville’s Pie Room A couple of weeks ago, KCUR-FM’s Walt Bodine Show devoted half of its twice-monthly Restaurant Critics program to the subject of pies. (You can listen to an archived edition of the show here). The program generated a lot of phone calls, including one from a Parkville resident who wanted to…

You can’t escape the California Raisins

If you weren’t scared of the California Raisins long ago, this might do the trick. Here’s a face-painting homage to the ubiquitous mascots of the 1980s. It will take a moment to figure out what’s face, what’s background and what’s a shirtless man. Repeat watching may be necessary.   Categories: Dining, Food & Drink Tags: California Raisins, face-painting

KU football fans are disappointments

%{}% Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing confirmed my suspicions from Saturday. Watching my Cyclones take on the Jayhawks to the wire on Versus, I was shocked at how quiet the fans were in the second half. Wasn’t my TV. Turns out there weren’t many fans left in the stands after halftime. The Topeka Capital-Journal reports that about 8,000 fans bolted and…

Haven’t those with ‘egg allergies’ suffered enough?

People with “egg allergies” are shit out of luck on getting the H1N1 vaccine in Johnson County. KCTV 5 reports that 2,300 doses of the H1N1 vaccine has arrived in JoCo, and the top of the list to get a shot are emergency responders and children. But those with egg allergies? “Some are still not eligible, like those with egg…

Tomorrow Night: Jonah Smith at Crosstown Station

When Jonah Smith plays Crosstown Station tomorrow night, he’s in a unique position. First of all, he’s playing between two cover acts (Jah Wheel and Trampled Under Foot, doing the Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin, respectively — although, to be fair, both acts have a slew of originals). Secondly, he’s trying to do this whole tour as a fan-funded thing,…

Concert Review: Kings of Leon at Sprint Center

It was a cold, misty night in Kansas City. A mass of people descended on the glowing orb of the Sprint Center to see a Rock Band with a capital “R” play spacious rock epics inside said arena. The Rock Band in question gave a high-quality, by-the-book performance with no surprises that surely satisfied fans but might not have won…

Subsidies the answer to overfishing?

Amid discussions of sustainable fisheries and concerns about overfishing, Southern Fried Science asks whether the government should be providing subsidies to fisherman? Supporting the concept is the precedent set by government subsidies for farmers, which ensures an employed workforce, puts limits on yields and production and restricts the amount of a given staple that can enter the marketplace. On the…

Second man pleads guilty to dogfighting charges

%{}% A St. Joseph man pleaded guilty today to promoting dogfighting. Rick P. Hihath, 55, pleaded guilty in federal court. He and six other men (including one who taught at a high school in my hometown) were charged in June with running a dogfighting operation. A three-state raid seized 350 dogs. Hihath, who worked at a state school for the…

Stephen Lynch @ the Midland postponed!

Comedian/singer Stephen Lynch was supposed to be at the Midland on Thursday night but the show has been “postponed due to a personal emergency.” A make-up date has already been announced for Saturday, December 12. So hang on to your tickets. And if you want a refund, you gotta go back to where you bought your tix. Here’s something to…

In Season: Sweet potatoes

We’re right on the cusp of sweet potato season, and this versatile vegetable deserves a spot on your plate outside of Thanksgiving dinner. Everybody can pick out a good sweet potato. Just avoid cracks or bruised vegetables and opt for firm potatoes. Sweet potatoes don’t need to be refrigerated and can last for several weeks as long as they remain…
