Demonstrators turn out for “Coffee with Cleaver”

U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver’s regular Saturday-morning meeting with constituents at JP Coffee in Lee’s Summit turned into a mob scene on August 8 when crowds protesting health-care reform showed up demanding a “town hall meeting” — and supporters of health-care reform turned out to counter the expected disruptions.

Today is National Frozen Custard Day!

We love frozen custard in Fat City and recently did a “battle of the frozen custards” using samples from the best-known national frozen custard chains: Culver’s and Sheridan’s. We also explained the difference between frozen custard and soft-serve. Since today is supposed to be gruelingly hot, I’m going to make a devotional pilgrimage to one of the local frozen custard…

This week’s “Best of Fat City”: Read it and weep

This week, we’ll not only re-cap the posts we think were the Top Stories on Fat City, but weave those stories with the major highlights from your favorite TV soap operas: 1) We were absolutely stunned that no one even ventured a guess as to the location of this week’s “Where Is It?” quiz. The photograph is to the right. So obviously,…

Girls Live On KJHK 90.7FM Next Wednesday

Straight from KJHK music director Alison Cain’s Twitter page comes this news: “girls in-studio @kjhk preliminarily scheduled for wednesday, august 12th between 4 and 8 pm” Girls are playing later that night at the Record Bar. The band’s on the cover of this month’s FADER, as well. That news also comes courtesy of Twitter, thanks to Range Life Records (@rangelifercrds)….

For those who comment, we salute you …

We hate puppies here at Plog, but that won’t stop us from reporting a messed-up story when we see one. Which is what Nadia Pflaum did earlier this week in “Animal control officers have new quota, are coming for Muffin.” As of August 1, each field officer at the Animal Control Department of Kansas City, Missouri, must issue a minimum…

Slide Show + Set Lists + Rubber Duckie: Glasvegas and Ida Maria

The Pitch Music Showcase wasn’t the only thing going on last night. The other thing: Scottish band Glasvegas and Norwegian rocker-girl Ida Maria played at the Granada. We got some hot shots, including this priceless backstage Polaroid of Glasvegas frontman James Allan. Click on the duckie for slides from the show. Wayward Q& A: Crackin’ Nuts with John Hulston

John Hulston has a lot on his plate these days. I caught up with the owner of Anodyne Records and co-owner of Czar Bar via Facebook and talked about what’s cookin’ in the Crossroads. The Pitch:Which is more difficult, being a bar owner or running a record label? John Hulston: Owning a bar for sure. I’m dealing with a much…

Last night’s tweets restored.

Though a friend told me early last night at the Pitch Music Showcase that Twitter had been hit with some kind of viral attack yesterday, that didn’t stop me from tweeting doggedly and with great effort throughout the night. Of course, none of my WaywardTweets posted, so because it’s easier than writing anything fresh with this massive hangover I’m contending…

Showcase Video: Freestyle jam feat. Mark Lowrey and Sephiroth

Because this is the first thing I’ve written all day about last night’s 279th annual Pitch Music Showcase, I feel compelled to tell you: It was great. A fucking awesome, enjoyable, rich night. Tons of people came out to support local music, and I have a feeling the majority of them were seeing a lot of those bands for the…

Thank you, Brad Pitt, for making Missouri sound cool

In Brad Pitt’s interview with Parade Magazine, he’s quoted as saying, “In Missouri, where I come from, we don’t talk about what we do—we just do it. If we talk about it, it’s seen as bragging.” In actual context, he was talking about how he had to quit smoking weed, but there’s gotta be a compliment in there somewhere. Categories:…

Flier of the Week: the Noise FM

Gavin Snider, guitarist and vocalist for Midnight Vinyl drew this amazing art for the Noise FM’s summer tour. The use of the terra cotta warriors of Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor of China, alongside the bands members makes them look both badass and imperial. The line work is also crisp and clean, working nicely with the Chinese themes used….

Now you have plans for the weekend

You need plans. Fat City has a recycle bin full of event listings. In this post, all of our problems are solved. Lobster might be cheap right now, but it always impresses a date. The Bristol’s Power & Light District location (51 East 14th Street) has live Maine lobsters for patrons at the bar this Friday. As a happy hour…

What’s in season: Corn

If you’ve got corn on the brain, that’s understandable — it’s apparently in everything. But there’s a big difference between the corn-based derivatives in soda or a phone made from corn-based plastic and a local cob of organic corn. “When it’s this sweet, you can just eat it raw straight off the cob,” says Dan Heryer of Badseed Farm. Corn…

Reporter’s Notebook: Mean Melin’s six air guitarists to watch

Mean Melin was stealthily going into tonight’s U.S. Air Guitar Championships until Wednesday. His rivals couldn’t check out his act because there were no videos on YouTube or Vimeo. This article in Washington, D.C.’s Express Night Out is proof — two air shredders from our nation’s capital, The Shred and Sanjar the Destroyer (aka STD) critiqued everyone in tonight’s air…
