Father’s Day presents

Forget boring cuff links, ties (even food-related ones) and the snuggie. Dad deserves something loud, lewd and preferably alcoholic. For the gift that keeps on giving, there’s the beer-of-the-month club good from two to 12 months. For as low as $21 per month dad will receive 12 beers from “lightly distributed U.S. microbreweries,” along with a newsletter explaining what the…

KC Council says yes to spending $500K on convention hotel study

Eight members of the Kansas City City Council unanimously decided to waste spend $500,000 to study whether building a 1,000 room convention hotel is a good idea. The man with the shiniest head, Terry Riley, tried to delay the hotel study vote, and councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks seconded. But only Riley, SSB and Deb Hermann voted in favor of waiting….

Gates Bar-B-Q named a landmark restaurant

Gates has a little more to strut about after being named one of the 23 landmark restaurants in the country. No, it’s not an official landmark as designated by the government. The title was bestowed by AOL, which called it “lip-smacking good” and commended the sauce as “what elevates it to the top of the heap,” especially when its on…

USA number one! In bad beer!

To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield, America can’t get no respect.  There are 1,500 breweries in the United States, the majority putting out good pale ales and porters. But when it comes to the way the rest of the world sees us, it all of that beer might as well be Budweiser. In the travel Web site Titanic’s survey of 1,600 people…

Friday Freebies

And once again, we bring you Friday Freebies, wherein we present things to do this weekend that won’t cost you any more than the gas it takes to get to ’em. Lawrence’s Be Moved Studio (above Liberty Hall at 2 E. 7th St.) presents “Antheros: An Evening of Haptic Awakening” on Friday night. Jenny Cook, Natalie Ann Dye, Jenny Hoyt,…

Artificial sweeteners are leaking into the water supply

New research shows that artificial sweeteners are not fully removed by waste-water treatment centers and linger in ground water, potentially affecting the water supply. German researchers examined seven common sweeteners and found the “incomplete elimination” of four — acesulfame, cyclamate, saccharin and sucralose — in water that had already been treated. Where they survive treatment, the sweeteners can build up…

Breakfast Buffet: Friday, 6/19

%{}% A thorough analysis of the rebranding of classic Schlitz, told through stories about grandpa’s house. In a case of opposites attract, tight-wads tend to marry spend-thrifts. Saudi Arabia may technically be a dry country but bottles of liquor can still be had on the black market for hundreds of dollars. The answers to food mysteries including why does popcorn pop…

When we agree with Sam Brownback…

…we feel compelled to say so. Especially since we are so often obligated to point out the senator’s faulty intelligence, as David Martin does so well in his column this week. Yesterday, Brownback announced that the Senate had passed a resolution apologizing for “the enslavement and racial segregation of African-Americans.” Brownback had sponsored the resolution along with Democratic Senator Tom…

What to do this weekend — our suggestions

Laugh for 24 hours straight. Check out artist Jackie Denning’s brand-spanking-new gallery in the West Bottoms. Opening tonight at Gallery 111: Gnome Show. Get ready for some football! Women’s…

Lincoln Prep named one of Newsweek’s top schools in the nation

According to a Newsweek “Web Exclusive,” the magazine has ranked Lincoln College Preparatory Academy, in the Kansas City, Missouri, School District, 128th out of 1,500 public high schools in the nation.  This is just the latest drop in a well-deserved shower of praise for Lincoln Prep. Six months ago U.S. News and World Report handed its Silver Medal ranking to…

Reporter’s Notebook: If you want your Street Lit tell Mid-Continent

Quentin Carter, the subject of this week’s feature, “Story of My Life,” has made a name writing gritty tales about Kansas City informed by his own youth as a drug dealer. He’s not alone either — the rising tide of the street-lit genre is responsible for big sales and lots of demand at the Kansas City Public Library. But despite…

Recession Relief: Sunday night dinner at Cafe Europa

I’m embarrassed to say that I hadn’t dined at Cafe Europa, the intimate little bistro at 323 E. 55th St. in Crestwood since it changed ownership in 2007. The venue is now operated by Andrew Atterbury and chef Nathan Feldmiller; in the afternoons, it’s still one of the busiest ladies-who-lunch spots in town, but the dinner crowd is a lot less genteel. Even…

Outdoor Markets: Farmer’s Market at Zona Rosa

The weekly Farmers Market in the Zona Rosa Center at I-29 and Barry Road is one of the smallest markets of its kind in town. There were only seven vendors (including John B. Goode, right, from Good Acres in Wathena, Kansas) selling fresh produce and other things last Tuesday; the market is every Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. There…

Burger of the week: The Greek Burger

Because of the construction that has closed — indefinitely, it seems — the 12th Street viaduct down to the West Bottoms, it’s a little harder to get to one of the more iconic diners in Kansas City: Jerry’s Woodswether Cafe at 1414 West 9th Street. Harder but not impossible. Still, the waitresses on yesterday’s lunch shift were complaining that having 12th…

Where is it? It’s here!

This week’s “Where Is It” quiz stumped everybody — including me! The building with the Flora’s Cafe sign is on a desolate stretch in downtown St. Joseph, Missouri — but I couldn’t find out anything about the former restaurant or the building. Or Flora, for that matter. Nut I’m sure there’s a great story just waiting to be told. Categories:…

Dave’s Stagecoach keeps its 3 a.m. license

Dave’s Stagecoach can keep its 3 a.m. license, the authoritative-sounding “Liquor Board” decided at a hearing this morning. Jim Hess, co-owner of Dave’s Stagecoach, tells The Pitch that the bar won the hearing today. But the fight to keep the 3 a.m. license might not be over. “They just won’t turn loose of it,” Hess says of the Westport Presbyterian…

View Larger Map The Johnson’s brother had previously reported him missing after he disappeared around Memorial Day. Police are also referring to Johnson’s death as a “death investigation.” If you…

Sage Francis Posts “Sick of Wasting” Mixtape

Backpack hip-hopper Sage Francis just posted his newest mixtape, Sick of Wasting, and you can download that sucker for free. It’s the fifth installment in the “Sick Of” mixtape series. This kind of sprung up out of the blue, considering it’s been two years since his Human the Death Dance release. Still, it’s totally worth grabbing. It features several tracks…

Youth Entrepreneurs set up in Washington Square Park

Spotted these folks out around the noon hour in Washington Square Park hawking cotton candy and drinks. They say they’re teachers and supporters with Youth Entrepreneurs of Kansas, a public not-for-profit organization that focuses on teaching at-risk youth business skills. They told us that this was an Apprentice-like competition that they’d only had a few hours to prep for. If…
