Appeals court pulls the brakes on Missouri’s death penalty machine, delays Russell Bucklew’s execution

With about six hours remaining before his appointment with the Missouri executioner, a federal appeals court spared Russell Bucklew – at least for now. Three judges on the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals stalled Bucklew’s planned at 12:01 a.m. execution by lethal injection. The decision at least temporarily averted Missouri becoming the scene of the first execution in the United…

Long odds for Russell Bucklew, who will only live for a few more hours unless courts delay his execution

%{}% Missouri is prepping to become the first state to execute someone in the weeks since Oklahoma’s grisly death chamber spectacle on April 29. It was on that date that Oklahoma scheduled a double-execution but delayed the second one indefinitely after corrections officials bungled Clayton Lockett’s lethal injection such that it took him 45 minutes to die. Russell Bucklew, a…

Chicken wings: Who really serves the best in town?

Q39, the one month-old barbecue restaurant at 1000 West 39th Street, makes a big claim on its menu. The platter of six chicken wings served here, glazed in a tangy chipotle barbecue sauce, are called “the best wings on the planet.” But the restaurant’s chef and owner Rob Magee isn’t noted for his use of hyperbole, so I asked him…

Morrissey is at Liberty Hall tonight, tickets still available

It has been five long, sad, lonely years since Morrissey last graced the area with his immaculately coifed presence. After two canceled tours, a bleeding ulcer and many broken hearts since his 2009 Midland date, it seems that everyone’s favorite melancholy man is returning for real this time, tonight at Liberty Hall.   Morrissey is also preparing to release his…

Taquito bandit terrorizes Northland QuikTrip

Criminally delicious. Now, look: We understand the temptation to steal taquitos at QuikTrip. If you’re feeling savory, they can be a very tasty, filling treat. Steak and Cheese, Pepper Jack, Spicy Chicken – not a dud in the bunch. Plus, there’s no bar codes or packaging that might alert a security system. Tong ’em off of that roller broiler thing,…

Boulevard’s Entwined Ale hits store shelves Tuesday

This past weekend at HopFest, Boulevard gave festivalgoers a taste of its latest release, Entwined Ale. On Tuesday, Entwined starts hitting store shelves throughout the metro in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles. Entwined, the first release in the brewery’s experimental Backroads Beers series, was brewed with Muscat grape juice and Nelson Sauvin hops. If you’re a wine drinker who doesn’t like beer, this one’s for…

PorchFestKC comes to West Plaza in June

In 2007, Ithaca, NY hosted the first-ever PorchFest – an outdoor festival featuring a lineup of musicians playing from, uh, porches. Since then, various cities have adopted the PorchFest format, and on Saturday, June 14, Kansas City will try its hand.  Over 70 bands – mostly local, but with a few exceptions – are booked for this free event, going…

Little Green Cars, from Dublin, are at RecordBar tonight

Despite the massive hype that accompanied Absolute Zero, the 2013 debut album from Dublin folk-rock quintet Little Green Cars, the record sounded not too far from the Lumineers’ debut a year earlier: steroid-driven crescendos, swaggering vocal harmonies and exuberant choruses recounting the oh-so-relatable follies of love. It’s an excellent album, to be sure, but the remarkable thing about Little Green…

The reason behind this is due to the fact that this season will be their first as a full member of…

Against Me! had a small crowd, but big heart at the Granada last night

Against Me! The Granada, Lawrence Sunday, May 18 Hopefully, Laura Jane Grace doesn’t think less of Lawrence for the slight turnout for last night’s show. The Granada was far less full than I was expecting, especially given the pretty much universally positive response to their latest album, Transgender Dysphoria Blues. However, all of the KU students moved out the day…
