The Kansas Department of Wildlife just laid off a bunch of workers

The Western Meadowlark, state bird of Kansas. The pressures on state agencies in Kansas are at an all-time high as a result of Gov. Sam Brownback’s radically conservative scorched-earth policies. Last week, budget constraints hit a breaking point at the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism, and 75 seasonal employees were laid off, the AP reports. That includes services…

Milwaukee Delicatessen Co. serves a Reuben with a side of history

Many famous dishes were invented in the kitchens of hotel dining rooms. The best known is probably the chilled concoction of fresh apples, celery and walnuts first created in New York City’s Waldorf Hotel (before it merged with the adjacent Astoria Hotel in 1897); the first eggs Benedict also came from the Waldorf kitchens. London’s Savoy Hotel created Peach Melba…

Paper Bird, Akkilles and Olassa are at RecordBar tonight

Featuring a trumpet, upright bass, banjo, guitar and drums, Denver’s Paper Bird is a seven-piece force of nature. The baroque chamber-pop band, fronted by harmonizing sisters Genny and Esme Patterson, blends driving rhythms with a complicated host of different influences. The band’s recent Rooms LP showcases them all: One minute, it sounds soulful and sweet; the next, the members are…

Huerco S. discusses the sounds of experimentation ahead of his show at FOKL this Saturday

Imagine a world where techno music was not immediately associated with pulsing neon lights and rave-y dance parties. Imagine, instead, that techno has been translated into a vehicle for intricate storytelling. That’s what Kansas City’s Huerco S. – the stage name of 22-year-old producer Brian Leeds – aims to do with his debut full-length Colonial Patterns. Except his music isn’t…

Sini Anderson, director of the new Kathleen Hanna documentary ‘The Punk Singer,’ discusses the film ahead of its debut at Tivoli this Friday

Kathleen Hanna, the legendary frontwoman of Bikini Kill, the influential 1990s Riot Grrrl punk band, would be a thrilling subject for a documentary under any circumstances. After all, this is a woman who pioneered third-wave feminism in punk music, who gave Kurt Cobain the phrase “smells like teen spirit” and who banished men from the pit at her concerts. Hanna…

Stroud’s is as old as Joan Collins, but has better legs

Several old birds turned 80 years old this year. Joan Collins, of course. Kim Novak. Also: Stroud’s Restaurant & Bar. Breasts and legs have figured prominently in all of their careers. Helen Stroud, a lawyer and a beautiful woman, by most accounts, opened a roadhouse on 85th Street with her husband, Guy, back in 1933. At the time, the spot…

Muscle Worship is at the Replay Lounge tonight

If you are looking for a chilled-out, relaxing weeknight show, you should steer clear of the Replay this Thursday. Lawrence rock quintet Muscle Worship is about the furthest thing from “chill,” and they wouldn’t have it any other way. The group makes wild, reckless-sounding music, and the band’s live shows are known for their formidable volume. Despite that, Muscle Worship’s…
