Queen Taco: The best tacos you’ve never heard about

You can almost eat like a king at Queen Taco in Independence. I wasn’t surprised when there wasn’t a chorus of raves for Queen Taco from the readers commenting under Jonathan Bender’s morning Fast Pitch post, “Who makes a terrific taco in Kansas City.” After all, unless you live in Independence, you probably haven’t heard of Aaron and Cicci Carreno’s…

Royals Fountain Lady speaks: ‘I was drunk, what do you think happened?’

KCPD Royals Fountain Lady is officially Internet famous. Update: Royals Fountain Lady has been identified as Jessica McCoy, 25, of Des Moines. The Internet loves Royals Fountain Lady! More websites are looking into the woman who splashed around in the outfield fountains at Kauffman Stadium during last night’s win over the Twins, and information is leaking out. The Kansas City…

Kansas City’s best Royals fan plays in the fountains

Living the dream at the K. Sometimes at the ballpark, you have to make your own fun. Last night’s Royals game was a quintessential lopsided laugher. The Royals dismantled the Twins in a 13-0 rout behind Jeremy Guthrie’s masterful 4-hit complete game shutout. Games like that can get a little boring for fans in the stands. But this Royals fan…

Tutera Group’s Mission Chateau project goes before Prairie Village Planning Commission tonight

Lynn Collins Signs like this that oppose Mission Chateau line some of Prairie Village’s streets The first substantive vote on a controversial senior-living-community proposal may occur Tuesday night when the Prairie Village Planning Commission meets to discuss the Mission Chateau project. Now that construction on Wal-Mart-anchored Mission Gateway, in Mission, is under way, the large senior-living and nursing community slated…

Boulevard’s home-brew competition: the reporter’s notebook edition

Facebook: Boulevard Brand content manager Andy Jenkins (left), quality assurance lab manager Elizabeth Belden and brewer Jeremy Danner hold up the home-brew entries. Outside of a football parking lot, I rarely drink beer on weekend mornings. But sometimes one’s liver must suffer for the cause. This past Saturday, I spent the morning and part of the afternoon with the employees…

Homemade root beer is popping up all around Kansas City

Parisi’s root-beer latte will keep you sipping. You can keep your fried food and food on a stick at county fairs, just don’t take my homemade root beer. I’ve enjoyed it slightly warm, and where carbonation seemed more afterthought than intent. But the closer it tastes to chewing on a piece of spicy bark, the more I’m in. In case…

Who makes a terrific taco in Kansas City?

Flickr: Eric_I__E Tacos…please. Tacos, like hamburgers before them, have made the leap from roadside stand to white-tablecloth glory. And as a result, you’re usually not very far from a taco. Finding a great taco, however, still takes some effort and knowledge. Czar Bar officially brought the Kansas City Taco Co. in-house last month. Mi Pueblito Meat Market (1311 Minnesota) has…

Liz Huffman, the former head chef at the Blue Bird Bistro from 2002 to 2007, joined the culinary staff of the Majestic Restaurant two years ago. Today, owner Frank Sebree announced that Huffman will become that restaurant’s executive chef on August 15, replacing longtime executive chef Jim Nelson. “Jim is taking a break from cooking for a while,” Sebree said….

Bluestem: The third barbecue street fair set for August 18

Bluestem/Facebook “All you can eat” can be four intoxicating words in the right circumstances – and not frequently heard in the vicinity of the upscale Bluestem restaurant in Westport. But on Sunday, August 18, the owners of the restaurant – chefs Colby and Megan Garrelts – will literally close down the stretch of Roanoke Street adjacent to Bluestem at 900…

Dear Applebee’s, your Lunch Decoy is terrifying

Applebee’s The idea of an inflatable me is disconcerting. Dear Applebee’s, I’ll admit that I’m occasionally scared by what I see in commercials. The eBay baby that Super Bowl audiences seem to love makes me find a reason to leave the room suddenly. And I believe that Hulu is a piece of alien technology. Still, even I wasn’t ready to…

The Pitch Music Showcase 2013: Gentleman Savage, Not a Planet, Antennas Up, Sons of Great Dane and Hammerlord at the Riot Room

Brooke Vandever There’s something about the Riot Room that encourages heavy drinking and loosened inhibitions. Maybe it’s the zillion well-curated taps and the endearingly ripped seat cushions lining the wall; you instantly feel that if you’re going to get anything out of the night, you need to have a decent buzz going. Luckily, Friday night’s Showcase lineup inside the Riot…

The good news, bad news and good news of Sporting KC’s Saturday defeat

Sporting Park sets attendance records, but the team hasn’t played too well there this year The good news: Sporting Park has set three attendance records in as many games hosted at the Kansas City, Kansas, soccer stadium. Sporting Kansas City’s game Saturday, in which they hosted the New York Red Bulls, managed to outdraw last Wednesday’s Major League All-Star Game…

Smith Westerns are at Riot Room tonight

Smith Westerns. It’s fun to watch a promising young band figure out its sound, and in the case of Smith Westerns, many of us have had the pleasure of monitoring the Chicagoans’ progress since they were fresh out of high school. Their ramshackle garage-rock debut had melodic kernels, and the follow-up, 2011’s Britpop crib job Dye It Blonde, boasted sturdier…

The Pitch Music Showcase 2013: Oils, John Velghe and the Prodigal Sons, and Making Movies at the Outdoor Stage

Leslie Kinsman Oils Friday night’s outdoor stage at The Pitch Music Showcase consisted of a variety of sounds, and it drew a mixture of curious and true-blue fans. Each band was super-enthusiastic and professional. And considering the diversity of genres playing night, the odds really could have worked against them. Luckily the crowd was warm, and everyone got drunk and…
