Kansas City streetcar lawsuit dismissed

The lawsuit aimed at the streetcar has been derailed. Jackson County judge Peggy Stevens McGraw dismissed a lawsuit Friday that sought to halt construction of the downtown streetcar line. Property owners Sue Ann Burke and Jeffrey Rumaner (aka Stretch, the guy who owns Grinders) sued and argued that the funding methods approved by the voters who live along the streetcar…

SXSW Thursday: Medora, Metz and disruptive technology, or something

Once a regular house, now the Spotify house. South by Southwest is not just about music, you guys. It is also about rich people who wear cosmetic eyeglasses and $140 plaid shirts and say words like “branding” and “crowdfunding” and “disruptive” with a totally straight face. I found this on the Internet yesterday, from the singer of indie-rock band DIIV…

One of the oldest Italian-American parishes in Kansas City, Holy Rosary Catholic Church, is famous for continuing an old Sicilian culinary tradition, the St. Joseph Table, each year in Columbus Park. A century ago, Sicilian immigrants living in and around the Columbus Park neighborhood practiced a custom they had brought with them from their homeland: celebrating the intercession of the…

Sporting KC’s Jimmy Nielsen was a closet cigarette smoker

Facebook: Sporting KC The White Puma used to sneak smokes. Pro athletes seemingly smoke only in the movies. And even then, it’s more for comedic effect (see Rhys Ifans in The Replacements) than a dramatic confession. So it’s a bit shocking that Sporting KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen announced to MLSSoccer.com that he quit smoking on December 31, 2012. In the…

Iron Maiden is making heavy-metal brews with a slight hint of lemon

IronMaidenBeer Iron Maiden is now in the beer business. You may have thought that Iron Maiden reached the Final Frontier with its 15th studio album back in 2010, but the British rockers apparently had one last trick up their sleeveless black T-shirts. The British heavy-metal band is set to release Trooper, a beer created for the group by Robinsons Brewery…

The team also added former Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel as Smith’s backup earlier this week. Cassel came to the Chiefs in 2009 following a strong final…

The Big 12 converges on KC again

The Big 12 men’s basketball tournament hasn’t sold out yet. And that has to be a first in college-basketball-loving Kansas City. At press time, all-session nosebleed tickets remained available through sprintcenter.com for $195 apiece (plus fees) — bad news for conference officials, KC Big 12 supporters and scalpers, and a reminder of the University of Missouri’s Southern secession. Then again,…
