It’s time KC got a food flea market

Now that Kansas City is getting comfortable with food trucks, it’s time to get even more experimental and appropriate the concept of the food flea market from Brooklyn, New York. Eater NY covered the opening of Smorgasburg (as did The New York Times) — the foodie complement to the Brooklyn Flea — in Brooklyn this past weekend. And with everything…

Gusto Bar and Lounge to soon be less disgusting inside

As one bar prepares to close its doors, another gets granted a new lease on life. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been receiving little tidbits of news here and there about how Gusto Lounge was changing (in a positive way), and the interior was gettin’ a spruce. That’s now confirmed. Categories: Music Tags: Gusto Lounge

Diocese was warned about priest’s ‘inappropriate’ contact with children

The principal at St. Patrick School warned the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph that teachers and parents were concerned about the Rev. Shawn Ratigan’s “inappropriate behavior with children.” Ratigan was arrested on suspicion of possession of child pornography last week, five months after the diocese became aware that he kept images of children on his computer. A diocese spokeswoman…

Anti-abortion group dresses Scarlett Johansson in a KKK robe for supporting Planned Parenthood (video)

You may have heard that Wichita-based anti-abortion group Operation Rescue is in the middle of a national campaign to de-fund Planned Parenthood. Yes, it was all going just fine until actress Scarlett Johansson did a PSA, asking people to support their local Planned Parenthood so women could get checked for cervical cancer, and maybe get some condoms now and then….

Who needs buttered popcorn when you can have a full meal in the movie theater?

For some reason, I kept missing the radio piece that aired yesterday on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered: a news story created by ATC correspondent and KCUR 89.3 reporter Laura Ziegler about the new AMC movie chain’s dine-in concept. Some of the Kansas City-based company’s theaters — including the AMC Mainstreet in the Power & Light District — have…

The Rev. Mark Kiyimba, opponent of Uganda’s proposed anti-gay legislation, will speak in Overland Park this weekend

The Rev. Mark Kiyimba fled Uganda in March, fearing for his safety after becoming an outspoken opponent of the proposed anti-homosexuality legislation in that East African country. Kiyimba’s upcoming appearances in Overland Park this weekend are significant because of Kansas City-based evangelist Lou Engle, who exported his homophobic agenda to Uganda last year, endorsing lawmakers’ efforts to lengthen jail terms…

Once Medicare’s defender, Roy Blunt votes to cut benefits

%{}% Politicians are inordinately awful people. Not all are broken, adulation-starved and capable of acts of hypocrisy that would give normal people diarrhea for a week, of course — just an unusually high number of them. Yesterday, U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt of Missouri voted for the House Republican budget that puts Medicare on a voucher system, a scheme that shifts…

Will Norton, YouTube celeb, still missing after Joplin tornado

The search for Will Norton continues in Joplin. Norton was driving his Hummer home after his high school graduation when the tornado hit and sucked him through the vehicle’s sunroof, despite his father trying to hold on to him. He hasn’t been seen since. His father is in stable condition. A “Help Find Will Norton” Facebook page has been set…

Video of tornado hitting Sedalia, Missouri, on Wednesday

This video was shot Wednesday of a tornado heading straight for the Sutherlands in Sedalia, Missouri. The Star reported that the tornado was either “a high EF1 or a low EF2.” It damaged homes, businesses and a trailer park, but the people of Sedalia were reportedly all accounted for. I’m tornadoed out for the year. H/t: Wheelingrabbit for uploading the…
