Wanda Jackson doesn’t act her age at The Granada

Wanda Jackson, with Holly GolightlyThe GranadaWednesday, May 18, 2011 A distinctly older crowd made its way through the doors of The Granada last night. Lots of gray hair and khaki were present, and door guys were pointing the more elderly toward security so that they might find some folding chairs. It was certainly a distinct change from the usual push-and-shove…

Anti-Koch-brothers group parodies 1970s’ ‘I’d like to buy the world a Coke’ commercial (video)

Wichita’s ultraconservative billionaire brothers David and Charles Koch likely won’t be amused by this video parodying the 1970s’ “I’d like to buy the world a Coke.” The video comes via the anti-Koch-brothers websites Koch Blocked and The Other 98 Percent. The commercial premiered last week — projected on the wall of the David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center in…

Would a ‘pay what you can’ restaurant work in KC?

The regular restaurant rules don’t apply at a few Panera Bread locations. The Panera Cares Cafes — in Portland, Oregon; Dearborn, Michigan; and Clayton, Missouri — are using a donation-only payment approach. The idea of “pay what you can” means that while there is a suggested retail value for menu items, it’s up to each diner to decide what to…

Court documents say Anthony Birtton told detectives that Bledsoe lunged…

Karaoke a Lo-Lo

The key to getting through a karaoke night without being overrun by X Factor wannabes lies with a strong KJ who knows what the crowd wants. “I’ve had a long-standing ban on Meat Loaf. I lifted it awhile back, mostly because Meat Loaf songs are long enough for me to use the bathroom and have a cigarette, maybe even flirt…

Trick Heavy

Professional magician Eric Price, who was shot in the head by a trio of teenagers about six months ago while he was sitting in his parked car at 74th Terrace and Broadway, quickly found that he had a solid support system. “So many KC fans helped me though my ordeal with the fund that Waldo Pizza spearheaded,” he says. Back…

Buddy Pictures

Winston Churchill and Harry Truman joined forces to beat Hitler. Later, Henry Rollins and Bill Stevenson teamed up to Get in the Van. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Tango and Cash took a shower together. The common thread? Friends make special things even more special. Plenty of Action, No Control, an art exhibit at the Paragraph Gallery (23 East 12th Street,…

Shall We Play a Game?

Where have you gone, Matthew Broderick? Men of a certain age turn their weary eyes to you. But you look even wearier than we feel. We see you, bow-tied and pale, carrying Sarah Jessica Parker’s purse at premieres and wishing you were anywhere else. We wanted your adulthood to be as cool as your adolescence — a 40-something Ferris Bueller….

Viva Clownvis

Last summer on an episode of America’s Got Talent, St. Louis entertainer Clownvis had his act discontinued after less than 30 seconds. He insulted Piers Morgan. (“Who are you?” he asked Morgan.) He let Howie Mandel know that he didn’t think Mandel had made a decent movie since 1989’s Little Monsters. And Sharon Osbourne told him to “fuck off.” It…

Are your friends tired of your 2 a.m. drunk dials? Has spring awakened your creative spirit but failed to rouse your muse? A Brisk Woo

Constant complainer Andy Rooney would probably decry speed dating as a recent hallmark of our ever-accelerating culture, but the concept has been around since at least 1998. Striptease Stage Mom

There are a handful of celebrity impressions that anyone can do, regardless of talent. The not-very-talented Keenen Ivory Wayans got a lot of mileage out of an entry-level Mike Tyson impression. Anyone can do Michael Jackson, Louis Armstrong, Rocky Balboa, Billy Bob Thornton’s Karl Childers from Sling Blade, and Gilbert Gottfried. Those who remember can also do Ethel Merman, the…
