Lonnie Moore, suspected bank robber, killed in gunfight with Independence police

We now know the name of the man killed in a gunfight with Independence police along Interstate 70 Tuesday. The man has been identified as 41-year-old Lonnie Moore. Moore’s cause of death hasn’t been released; the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office is waiting on toxicology reports. Don’t expect much more info on this until that report is released. However, Fox…

Five foods you’ll regret taking on a picnic

Spring is officially here, and Sunday will finally feel like it. So it’s time to trade in evenings spent dining by the fireplace for picnic baskets and sunny days. Fat City is here to help you choose the optimal springtime spread. Let’s start by agreeing to avoid these outdoor-meal blunders.  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink

Marcus and Markieff Morris of KU reportedly close to signing with an agent. And no, this isn’t an April Fools’ joke

Yahoo! Sports’ Marc Spears is reporting that Marcus and Markieff Morris are close to signing with agent Jason Martin. No, I’m not taking this from the fake ESPN report that said five Jayhawks, including the Morris twins, would be turning pro. According to Spears, the Morris twins met with Martin on Wednesday in Beverly Hills, California. The twins haven’t officially…

Hot stuff: the difference between real and powdered wasabi

The little ball of neon-green stuff — it has the consistency of Play-Doh — perched on the edge of your platter of sushi rolls is wasabi, right? In most area sushi restaurants, the condiment called wasabi is almost always an imitation version, made from mixing water with a powdered “wasabi” that’s concocted, typically, from horseradish, mustard, tapioca starch and green…

Savage Love’s Dan Savage coming to KU

Have you ever wanted to ask Savage Love’s Dan Savage a question but never gotten around to firing off your query? Now’s your chance to ask the man in-person. Savage is coming to the University of Kansas for a talk on April 19. Savage, who recently started the It Gets Better Project against bullying, will give a talk at the…

New tunes from the Spook Lights better than an April Fools’ prank

We’re barely at the halfway mark of April Fools’ Day, and we’re already tiring of the “so-and-so is married / dead / in a relationship / divorced” updates on our Facebook feed. This is to say nothing of the various Internet pranks being perpetrated (everybody’s on to you, Think Geek), although Punknews running 10,000 different reviews for the new Dopamines…

Bright Eyes serenades your tender heart on Saturday night at the Uptown

Conor Oberst’s musical scope, judging from Bright Eyes’ history, is tightly tethered to the singer-songwriter’s physical location. Over 13 years, Oberst’s fret-buzzing folk left the bland stretches of suburbia and lit out for the country, expanding into the orchestral indie-Americana of two critical blockbusters: Lifted, or the Story Is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground and I’m…

16-year-old girl, home sick from school, foils home invasion

KMBC Channel 9 has the most kick-ass story of the day (so far). A 16-year-old girl who was sick and home from school helped police nab a guy who kicked in the front door of her Prairie Village home earlier today. The girl reportedly heard the front door getting kicked in, hid and called police. Police surrounded her home near…

What kicks off the start of grilling season for you?

It takes dedication to grill in winter. You’ve got to be willing to deal with the elements and learn to cook with a flashlight between your teeth. Perhaps, even more importantly, you need to change the propane tank when it’s empty. After smoking out my kitchen with a few of Scimeca’s Italian sausages on a stove-top griddle, I can tell…

Keep your pockets fat: A weekend of free shows awaits you!

We already told you about the Record Machine’s free show tonight at the Black Bamboo as part of the First Friday art walk, but we’ve also got the scoop on a couple of other free live shows happening this weekend. And that could mean less strain on your pockets (or just more money for booze). Categories: Music Tags: Audiovox, Free…

Man crashes through Price Chopper’s ceiling; clean up in aisle one …

There’s a mystery at the Price Chopper. A man fell through the ceiling of the grocery store in Lee’s Summit on Thursday around 6:45 p.m., according to KMBC. No one is quite sure why he was crawling around the store’s ceiling. Chances are, he wasn’t checking things off his grocery list and he wasn’t a card-carrying Chopper Shopper. Categories: News…

Chef Sandi Corder-Clootz, Part Three: Recipe for Spinach Mushroom Loaf and Tomato Basil Marinara

Chef Sandi Corder-Clootz first started giving away her secret recipes for vegan and vegetarian cuisine in a series of intimate cooking classes. But while developing the curriculum for the classes, she realized that she had the foundation and recipes for an entire cookbook. In October 2008, Eden Alley released “Stir-Well to Heaven,” which to date has sold more than 1,000…

Toro Y Moi’s chillwaves will collide with the Riot Room tonight

A teenage Chaz Bundick began tweaking samples on his laptop in 2001, fueled by the ’70s and ’80s sounds of his parents’ record collection. Over the next nine years, he released a handful of demos under various monikers, eventually settling on Toro Y Moi. Then the great chillwave of 2010 washed up Toro Y Moi’s Causers of This on the…

Wanna know what’s rarer than the Hope Diamond?

Wayward Blog gets a lot of press releases, but few have as much spunk as this one. I received the following press release yesterday and wanted to share it because it made me chuckle, and chuckles are hard to come by these days. (Seriously. Just click over to The Plog.) Subject: What’s rarer than the Hope Diamond? (A bar that…

R.I.P., chillwave: the top 10 chillwave artists, and where they are now

Last summer, chillwave emerged as the go-to genre for emerging artists. Its songs were digestible but often forgettable, snippets of sample pop accented by reverb-heavy vocals leaning heavily on the DIY aesthetic. It had its day in the sun, but much of the genre’s foundation and critical support began to erode as early as last fall. Initially, South Carolina’s Toro…
