What’s Poppin’ Off: Ke$ha, Styx and Ted Nugent …?

It’s a big week for summer and early-fall show announcements. I know none of us want to think about falling leaves and brisk air. Blame Ke$ha, LMFAO and Spank Rock. They’re slated to perform at Starlight on Friday, September 2, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35-$49.50. However, Starlight kind of — I stress kind of — redeemed itself yesterday, when…

This fundraising fish fry gets right to The Point

Easter is 17 days away, and the Fat City readers who observe Lenten traditions — or just have a yen for fried fish — know that the next two Fridays are chock-full o’ fish frys. (Click here for the Catholic Key’s list of all the church dinners in the metro.) But there’s a fundraising fried-fish dinner scheduled for next Friday…

Genessee Royale: Count (the last days) of Monte Cristo

Todd Schulte, the owner of Genessee Royale, the stylish breakfast-and-lunch restaurant in the West Bottoms, is more than ready for warmer weather to appear. He wants to open the glass-paned garage doors — this space really was a garage and gas station once — and begin serving meals outside on the patio. He’s also ready to introduce a new menu…

Missouri, Kansas among the states with ‘the most shocking anti-woman legislation’

I feel as if I’m about to tell you that water is wet. AlterNet ranked the “10 States With the Most Shocking Anti-Woman Legislation” yesterday, and sadly, predictably, Missouri and Kansas both made the top 10. The only surprise is that Missouri ranked seventh, and Kansas ranked eighth. The top honors went to South Dakota, Virginia and Arizona. Categories: News,…

Lawrence shops stuck with presumptive Kansas Final Four T-shirts

Jayhawk fans don’t need another reminder that they didn’t make the Final Four after getting whooped by VCU. It’s even more painful for a couple of Lawrence apparel stores — Jayhawk Spirit and Jock’s Nitch — that are stuck with hundreds of pre-ordered T-shirts celebrating a Final Four berth that never happened, according to the University Daily Kansan. Jayhawk Spirit…

Slideshow: Queens of the Stone Age at the Beaumont

If you were at the Queens of the Stone Age’s show last night, the synapses in your brain are probably completely crispy. (At least, that’s what our writer Berry Anderson is telling us. Check out her review of the night’s hard-rockin’ swagger here.) Our photographer Scott Spychalski was on the scene, too. Click the photo above to see more.  Categories:…

Hot damn: KC’s Umberto gets plugged on Pitchfork‘s ALTERED ZONES

Pitchfork’s sister blog, ALTERED ZONES, gave a shout out to Kansas City, Missouri’s Umberto. (The original shout came from Rose Quartz.) Here’s what the blog says: Moving on from the ’70s horror-doom reverence of his last few releases, Matt Hill of Kansas City’s Umberto is taking to the red Corvette and submerging his synth experiments in a milieu that Dee-Dee…

Lawrence groups want to protect right to discriminate against those ‘choosing LGBT lifestyle’

Some folks in Lawrence would like it to remain legal to discriminate against people based on their gender identity, thank you very much. That was the message sent loud and clear Wednesday night in a Lawrence church during a discussion over adding gender identity to a city ordinance barring discrimination. The Lawrence Journal-World reports that groups, including the Alliance Defense…

Anthony Jackson, 16, charged in the killing of Oladipo Oladimeja in a McDonald’s parking lot

Anthony Jackson was 15 years old at the time of  the killing of Nigerian-born University of Missouri-Kansas City student Oladipo Oladimeja. He’s 16 now and facing second-degree murder charges (along with charges of first-degree robbery and armed criminal action) after being certified to stand trial as an adult.  Oladimeja, 25, who worked as a corrections officer, was using his laptop…

Help make Baby Teardrops the next NYC artist of the month

Matt Dunehoo may have moved on from his former Kansas City project, Doris Henson, a while ago; but we here at Wayward like to keep tabs on what our favorite formerly local musicians are up to these days. Dunehoo’s new band, Baby Teardrops, is nominated in an online poll to be the next New York City artist of the month…

The scene around Knobtown

Photographer Sabrina Staires tried to capture the essence of Knobtown in a photo essay accompanying David Martin’s cover story this week about John Uhlmann’s failed redevelopment plan.
