Kansas City’s sprawling ways make growing old a bitch

Sunday editions of The Kansas City Star can feel like a bit of a rip-off, what with the front-page ad and C.W. Gusewelle writing about the splendors of yellow forsythia in the metro section. Then something like Diane Stafford’s series about growing old in Kansas City comes along, and taking the paper on weekends seems worthwhile again.  Stories about aging…

Record Store Day at Zebedee’s

More pictures from the Record Store Day scene, thanks to The Pitch’s own Ashford Stamper. This time, we hit up Zebedee’s on 39th Street. Categories: Music Tags: Zebedee’s RPM Records CDs & Collectables

It’s not enough for cakes to look pretty; they have to smoke, too

Local celebrity — and reality TV cake-design champion — Mike Elder brought in four of his friends, all national culinary reality-show heavyweights, to compete for handmade sculptural trophies yesterday at the “Icing on the Cake” sugar exposition and competition, a benefit for the local domestic-violence shelter Newhouse, at the Overland Park Sheraton Hotel; the fundraiser netted $15,000 for the organization….

The five best restaurants to begin an affair

No, we’re not promoting adultery here in Fat City. Gluttony, maybe, adultery … no. But some people, you know, are simply going to break the seventh commandment, no matter what. And once that decision has been made, the guilty parties have to meet for a drink or an intimate dinner in a dark and secluded place where there’s no chance…

Bon Iver’s new — and strange — video: a leak from the forthcoming album?

Justin Vernon, the mastermind behind indie-folk soundscape artists Bon Iver, has been known for his bizarre style. While his music is ghostly and beautifully haunting, his descriptive, suggestive lyrics are supported by richly layered harmonies that often need entire rooms of people singing them to achieve the desired quality of sound. Bon Iver’s live performances often utilize the audiences themselves,…

Pop-ups and other drugs

Some things should be done only in the dark of night, in the shadows of streetlamps. You turn a corner and suddenly you see them. This is your chance. You reach inside your jacket and pull out … a fork?  Categories: Dining, Food & Drink

Vinyl Renassiance at 39th Street: opening day

The newest addition to Kansas City’s record-store community opened on Saturday, just in time for Record Store Day: Vinyl Renaissance at 39th Street. Here are some shots from the day’s festivities, thanks to Ashford Stamper. Categories: Music Tags: record store day, Vinyl Renassiance

Where did I find this bowl of all-you-can-eat pasta?

There’s only one of these restaurants left in the metro — the Texas-based chain closed a couple of its other Kansas locations — but this one, in a high-traffic tourist spot, is popular for its frequent low-priced dinner specials. The current special offers an unlimited bowl of pasta (patrons can choose both the pasta and the sauce) and an all-you-can-eat…

More Record Store Day shots: the Lawrence scene

I arrived at Love Garden Sounds a smidgen before the long-loved Lawrence record store opened its doors to record-hungry music lovers. The RSD line went back about four storefronts, and people filed into the store at 10 a.m. on the dot. Once inside the store, early birds got their shot at the exclusives table. Diverse resurrects the King of Pop with style at RecordBar

A Tribute to Michael Jackson with Diverse and Friends Friday, April 15, 2011 RecordBar Better than: Dusting off my old MJ vinyl and throwing it on the turntable (which is saying something — that’s one of my favorite pastimes). The King of Pop was alive and well Friday night when local jazz whizzes Diverse and a host of their impossibly…

The five best places to dine with your pooch

Sometimes the conversation with your dinner partner can seem a bit one-sided. And sometimes you probably feel like she’s paying attention to everybody else in the room but you. And then there’s that whole drooling thing. While we can’t help make your dog a better companion, we can tell you where you won’t get looked at funny for choosing to…

Love Garden’s Record Store Day 2011 a warm and friendly affair

When I arrived at Love Garden Sounds at 9 a.m. for Saturday’s Record Store Day shenanigans, it was most assuredly neither sunny nor the 70 degrees it would be later. Wind chill knocked the temp down into the 20s, and a stiff breeze was gusting down Mass Street. The line of folks was already 20 to 30 strong, with many…
